To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, JOHN TALDHEIM, a citizen of the United States, residing in Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriting Machines, of which the following is a specifica-t-ion.
' This invention relates to sound-deadening cases or hoods for typewrit-ing machines of the continuous billing variety, one form of which machine is shown in lVernery & Smith, No. 1,132,055, granted March 16, 1915. The sound-deadening casing or hood is of the general type disclosed in my prior application, Serial No. 466,820, May 4:, 1921 (now Patent No. 1,519,645, dated December 16, 1924;)
In the Underwood continuous billing or fan-fold machine, the usual letter-feeding carriage has a rearward extension, upon which a carbon-sheet carriage may move forwardly and rearwardly. Plies of work-webs, fed in from the rear of the machine, are interleaved with the carbon-sheets attached to said carbon-carriage, and the webs and carbon-sheets are drawn forwardly around the platen to the printing point. The webs usually comprise a succession of similar printed forms, and, when a form has been typed, the platen is swung upwardly and forwardly in a swing-frame mounted on the carriage, to permit the sheets to be straightened out so that the carbon-sheets may be more easily retracted to co-operate with a fresh portion of the worlrwebs. The typed forms are then ga-ged against a gage carried by the platenswing-frame and severed by a knife carried by said frame adjacent the platen.
The present invention provides a hood or casing which deadens the noises arising in the typing operation, while permitting easy access to and operation of the machine. For this purpose, the casing comprises a bodypart and a cover-part or cover hinged at the rear tosaid body-part, said body-part being provided with a large front opening to permit passage of the machine therein, and be ing sufliciently large to receive the entire machine with the exception of the banks of keys which project forwardly from the bodypart. A cover-plate is mounted at the front f the bodppart to close th front opening the patent to front door therein. The cover-part encloses the machine at the top and terminates at the front a short distance above the cover-plate, to form a slot through which various operating handles on the earriage'may pass to project outside of the casing; sound-deadening means being provided to close the slot. To permit easy access to the typewriter-carriage and to the carriageextension, upon which is mounted the carbon-carriage and over which pass the worlcwebs, and to enable the platenswing-fraine to be swung upwardly and forwardly, the cover-part is hinged near the extreme rear of the body-part, so that, when said cover-part is raised, the entire carriage and carriage-extension will be exposed. lVith the cover-part inraised position, the platen-frame may be swung upwardly and forwardly to permit the work-webs to be straightened under the platen in the usual manner and for the usual purpose. At cer-,
tain times it is desired merely to have access to the platen and its associated mechanism, as for the adjusting the work-webs around the platen. It is therefore a feature of this invention to provide the cover-part with an auxiliary or cover which may be raised or lowered independently of the main coverpart to permit access to the mechanism at the front of the machine. Said front cover is preferably provided with a wiiidowto permit the machine in the interior of the casing to be viewed. a Another feature of this invention is the provision of means whereby work-webs may be fed continuously throughsaid casing to the machine, without removing any part of the casing or forming an outlet for sounds.
Still another feature of the invention relates to means for releasing and lifting the cover by a single finger-piece. 7

In a continuous billing or fan-fold typewritingmachine, continuous webs 35 are fed to the machine, and this invention provides means whereby said webs may be fed to said machine from outside said casing without necessitating removal of any part of the casing, and-without providing an outlet through which sounds may pass. Said means comprises a slot 90 in the body-part, directly to the rear and beneath the guide-bar 36, through which the work-webs 35 may pass, the slot being closed by felt strips 91 fixed one to each side of the slot, so that the surfaces are in engagement with the surfaces of the work-webs, said strips thus closingall of the slot not occupied by said webs. The slot 90 extends completely across the casing, and, when the carriage and its extension move laterally from right to left, the work-webs will be carried between gages 37 to the right and left,.sliding in said slot 90 between said felt strips 91.
It will be apparent that the cover-part hinged at the rear at 62 to said body-part will, when opened, expose substantially the entire carriage and carriage-extension. Thus, in the position shown in Figure 5, the cover is raised to such a height as to permit the swinging frame 39 and the attached 42 to swing freely to its forward and upward position. The upward movement of the cover-part 61 may be limited by pin 101 on the body-part which engages the arm. 85 fixed to said cover-part. However, where it is not desired to have access to the carriage-extension, or where the swinging frame 39 is not to be operated forwardly, it is inconvenient Ito raise the entire coverpart. Thus, if erasures are to be made on the work-webs at the front of the platen, or where the webs are to be adjusted in position around the platen, it is suflicient to provide access merely to'the front of the machine. Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A sound-deadening casing to enclose a machine of the class described and permit operation thereof from the outside, com prising a. body-portion to receive the machine and having a rear overhang and lateral overhang-s to accommodate the machine, and a hinged cover to be swung upwardly and rearwardly to permit upward and forward swinging of :the platen-displacing frame of the machine and to give access to the carboncarrier thereof. 7 A Senna-deadening casing to enclose a machine of the class described and permit operation thereof from the outside, compris ing a body-portion to'receive the machine and having lateral overhangs to accommodate the travel of the carriage and the carbon carrier track, and a cover hinged at its rear to said body-portion to be swung upwardly to permit upward-and-forward swinging of the platen-displacing frame, and to give access to the carbon-carrier, said body-portion having, adjacent the rear end of the carbon carrier-track, a slot to provide for the passage of continuous webs into the casing adjacent the rear end of said track, and for transverse movement of the webs with the carriage, and means to seal said slot around said webs. Y 3. A sound-deadening casing to enclose a machine having a. platen, a traveling carriage therefor, rearward extension the? i to travel therewith, a carbon-re .cling device on said extension, and platen-d ing frame on said carriage, comprising a body-portion to receive the machine and having lateral overhangsto accommodate the travel of said carriage and its extension, and a cover hinged at the rear of said bodyportion to be swung upwardly to permit upward-and-forward swinging of the platendisplacing frame, and to give access to the carbon-carrier, said cover having hingedlv connected its front end a door openable to give access to the upper front part of the raising of the cover-part exposes said carriage and extension, said cover-part having hingedly fix d thereto an auxiliary cover operable indc aendently of the rest of the cover-part for permitting access to the front of thefmachine without raising the coverpart, a handle for raising said front cover independently of the cover-part, and a handle for raising said cover-part as a unit.
5. A sound-deadening casing to enclose a machine having a platen carriage therefor, a platen-displacing frame on said carriage a rearward extension of said carriage, a carhon-retracting device on said extension, and a. web-guide on the rear end of said extension to dc webs to the carbonretracting device, said casing coniprising a body-portion to receive the. machine and having lateral carri. accommod ting ov hangs, a rearward overhang with through which the wchs pass to said guide, and a roof over the rear end of said extension and over the rcarna d overhang, and a cover hinged at the forw rd edge of said roof to be swung upwart upward-and-forward sivi platendisplaeing frame, and to give access to the carbon-carrier, said coverhaving .t front a forwardly and (lOWDWZIT-fllY inclined door hinged at its upper edge to give acc ss to the upper front part of the machine without lifting the cover, and afinger-piece at the lower edge of said door to lift the same independently of the cover.
6. A casing for deadening the sound of operation of a typewriting machinm comprising a body-part and a cover-part hinged to said hod part. spring means normally tending to raise said cover-part, a latch normally urged to effective position for holding said covcr-part in lowered position against the action of said spring means, a handle mounted on said cover-part to liftthe coverpart and having a limited. movement before lifting the cover-part, and means actuable h v said handle. in such limited movement, to release said latch.
7. A sound-deadening casing to cnclosc machine of the class dcscrihcd and permit operation thereof from the outside, comprising a body-portion to rec ive the machine, an upwardl urged cover hinged at the rear of said hod portion to he swung upwardly to permit upward-and-forward swinging of the platen-displacing frame. and to give access to the carbon-carrier. and cover-latching means including a hook on the inner vtide of and pivoted to aside wall of said cover, and a pin on said body-portion to be engaged by said hook. a stop-pin on said side wall to limit the releasing movement of the hook, and a linger-piece on the outer side of said side wall, to swing said hook against said stop-pin to release the cover, and then to urge the cover upwardly.

A sound-deadening casing for a. machine of the class described,having at its front an opening through which the key board projects and a slot through which controlling handles project from the carriage, and comprising nobody-portion with side walls comparatively low at the front to expose the ends of the carriage and comparatively high along the carbon-carrierextension, and a cover hinged at its top and rear to said body-portion and having side walls to fit the side walls of the body-portion, a ceiling at a stnlicient elevation to accommodate the gage bar on the platen-displacing frame and the carbon-carrier handleand a transparent wall at the front to permit work on the platen to be viewed. 7
9. A sound-deadening casing for a machine of the class described, having at its front an opening through which the keyboard projects and a slot through which controlling handles project from the carriage, and comprising a body-portion and a cover hinged at its top and rear to said body-portion and having a ceiling at a sufiicient elevation to accommodate the gage bar on the platen-displacing frame and theearbon-ear rier handle, and a transparent wall at the front to permit work on the platen to be viewed, said transparent wall being shiftahle with reference to the rest of the cover to pern'iit access to the machine at the front of the carriage.
10. A sound-deadening casing for a machine of the class described, having at its front an opening through which the keyhoard projects anda slot through which controlling handles project from the car riage, and comprising a body-portion andva cover hinged at its top and rear to said body-portion and having a ceiling at a suiticicntelevation to accommodate the gage bar on the platen-displacing frame and the carbon-carrier handle, and a transparent wall at the front to permit work on the'platen to be viewed, said transparent wall being hinged at its upper edge to be swung up- 'ardly independently of the rest of the cover to permit access to the machine at. the front of the carriage.
11. A sound-deadening casing for a machine of the class described, having at its front an opening through which the keyboard projects and a slot through which controlling handles project from the car riage, and comprising a bodvportion and a cover hinged at its top and rear to said bodyportion and having a ceiling at a suflicient elevation to accommodate the gage bar on the platen-displacing frame and the carbonoarrier handle, and atransparent wall at the front to permit work on the platen to be viewed, said transparent wall beinghinged at its upper edge to be swung upwardly independently of the rest of the cover to permit access to the machine at the front of thecarriage, and supported by the rest of the cover so as to be shiftable therewith.
12. A sound-deadening casing for a machine of the class described, comprising a outside of the casing to the rear end of said extension.
13. A casing to enclose and deaden the sound of operation of a continuous billing typewriting machine having a carriage and a rearward extension of said carriage over which extension are fed plies of work-webs upwardly from a supply at the rear, said caslng comprlsing a body-part and a cover,
part, said body-part having lateral overhangs in which said carriage operates, and a rearward extension in which said carriageextension operates, said rearward extension of the body-part comprising a rearward overhang and a slot in the bottom of said rearward overhang beneath the rearward end of said carriage-extension to provide for the passage of the work-webs upwardly to the rear of the carriage-extension and for lateral 'movements of the webs with said carriage, and flexible means for holding the work-webs at a tension as they pass through the slot.

A sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine of the fan-fold type, said casing comprising a main cover which, when raised, exposes said machine from front to rear to permit displacement of the platen to release the web-plies in use and rearward movement of the carboncarrier, by its handle, to shift carbon-sheets, interleaved between said web-plies, to fresh sections of the web-plies, and an auxiliary cover at the front which, when there is no requirement for raising the main cover, may be shifted to expose the platen and a smaller portion of the adjacent parts, said auxiliary cover hinged to the forward endof the main cover.
15. A sound-deadening casing for a continuous billing typewriting machine comprising a platen around which may be fed continuous web-plies and interleaved carbon-sheets, a carriage for said platen, feedrolls mounted in said carriage to co-operate with the platen to feed said web-plies, a gage device extending upwardly from the delivery side of the platen and swingable forwardly to straighten said webs and separate the platen and feed-rolls, and an operating handle extending forwardly from the carriage and traveling there-with, said casing comprising'a body-part having rearwardly-located means for passing the web plies to the carriage, and a front wall, along the top of which said handle travels, and laterally-projecting overhangs to accommo date the travel of the carriage and its extension, and a cover forming with the front wall of the body-part a slotthrough which said handle projects and so connected with the body-part as to permit its forward end to be, raised sutlieiently to permit the forward swing of said gage device and the gaging of the web-plies thereby.
16. A sound-deadening casing for a continuous billing typewriting machine comprising a platen around which may be fed continuous web-plies and interleaved carbonsheets, a carriage for said platen, feed-rolls mounted in said carriage to co-operate with the platen to feed said webplies, a gage device extending upwardly from the delivery side ofthe platen and swingable forwardly to straighten said webs and separate the platen and feed-rolls, and an operating handle extending forwardly from the carriage and traveling therewith, said casing comprising a body-part having at the rear a slot through which the continuous web-plies pass to the carriage and along which the web-plies travel with the carriage; and comprising a front wall,along the top of which said handle travels, and laterally-projecting overhangs to accommodate the travel of the carriage and its extension, and a cover forming with the front wall of the body-part a slot through which said handle projects and so connected with the body-part as to permit its forward end to be raised sufficiently to permit the forward swing of said gage device and the gaging of the web-plies thereby.
17. A sound-deadening casing for a machine of the class described, comprising a body-portion to receive the machine and having a front wall, the upper edge of which contacts with an ope-rating handle projecting forwardly from the carriage, laterallyextending overhangs to accommodate the travel of the carriage and the carbon-carrier extension, a rearward overhang to accommodate the rear end of said extension and having a slot in its bottom to permit the passage of continuous webs to the rear end of said extension, and a roof over said rearward overhang; and a cover pivoted to the forward edge of said roof and co-operating at its forward edge with, the upper edge of the front wall of the body-portion to form a slot along which said operating handle travels.

A sound-deadening casing for a machine of the class described, comprising a body-portion to receive the machine and having a front wall, the upper edge of which contacts with an operating handle projecting forwardly from the carriage, laterally-em tending overhangs to accommodate the travel of the carriage and'the carbon-carrier extension, a rearward overhang to accommodate the rear end of said extension and having a slot in its bottom to permit the passage of continuous webs to the rear end of said extension, and a roof over said reaiwvard overhang; a cover pivoted to the forward edge of said root and eo-operating at its forward edge with the upper edge or the front wall of the hod portionto form a slot along which said operating handle travels; and means to hold said pivoted cover in such raised position as to provide clearance for the gage-frame when swung forwardly to release the webs preparatory to gaging their forward ends.
19.
