l IMPROVEMENT IN IRON FENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,502, dated August 25, 1874 application tiled Aprim1 1874.
To all whom it may concer-n: i
Be it known that 1, J osEPE B. MAUEER, ot' Mansfield, in the county of Richland and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fences, ot' which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to an improvement in fences; and consists in a tubular postsecured to a coupling-bar connecting the ends of tubular rails, a concave plate ttin g over the joint, and provided on its reverse side with a vertical concavity to receive the post, which is secured against it by a bolt, one end of which is secured in the coupling-bar, whence it passes through the plate and post, beyond which it is provided with a thread and nut, by which means the post, plate, bar, and joint may be held securely together.
The tubular rails are provided with pickets of suitable material, and arched within the rails, through which they pass vertically, and wherein they are secured by a key, which extends the length of the rail, passing through the arch of the pickets. The post is provided with a circular foot, having a vertical iiange to secure it in masonry, and also a side plate to prevent its overthrow.
'Ihe object of the invention is to provide a useful and strong means of inclosure. 1
Figure 1 is a front elevation ot' a device embodyin g the elements of the invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse horizontal section through the post A and adjacent parts. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section throughtherailB. Fig. 4 is a detached view of the junction of the rails.
A in the accompanying drawings is a tu bular post, provided with the circular foot a, having upon its lower end the upright flange b. At a proper distance above this foot is provided the plate d, of proper dimensions,
and secured thereto by the bolt and nut, (not shown,) and bythe rings l1., which encompass the post. The plate d is to prevent the fence yielding laterally. The rails B are tubular, and at their joints are connected by the couplingbar D, which extends a suitable distance into each rail, and has xedly attached to it the bolt E, which extends through coincident apertures in the ends of the rails 5 thence through the plate F and the post A, beyond which its extremity is threaded, and provided with the nut i; which when screwed down, the rails, plate, bar, and post are securely united. The plate F is interposed between the postand the rails, extending a suitable distance beyond the ends of the latter, and secured thereto by thepins x. It is properly concaved to t snugly upon the rails, while its center on the other side has a vertical concavity to receive the side of the post. The pickets H are, in the present instance, bowed; but they may be single bars and pass vertically through the tubular rails B, the portion which is within the rail having a bow or arch, K, through which, with its opposite side bearing upon the rail,` passes the elongated key I, serving to secure the pickets firmly in position.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isy A coupling device consisting of the bar D, plate F, and bolt E, in combination with a tence-post and tubular rail B, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing improvement in felices, as above described, I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 27th day of March, 1874.
