nUoKLn Application filed December 6, 1921. Serial No. 520,301.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, dorm: ll. Canrrirrnn and Gnonsn W. Tnoor citizens of the United States, residing at New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and usefulv improvements in Buckles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to buckles. A buckle comprising the invention may )e utilized with advantage in widely different ways. It may for instance, be advanta geously employed, for holding; a strap web in closed relation, when associated for instance with a belt such as is used for holding school books or in connection with harness and even human wear. Obviously therefore the invention is not restricted to the employment of the buckle in any particular connection.
Among the objects of the invention are the provision of a buckle which can be readily and inexpensively made, which possesses the requisite strength, and which will main tain with certainty a strap or band in closed condition but which can be easily and quickly released when necessary.
The article possesses other features of novelty and advantage, which with the fore going, will he set forth at length in the following description. Hereinafter will be dis closed fully, one of the several forms of embodiment of the invention which has been selected for illustration in the drawings accompanyinpand forming part of the present specification. It will be evident that the invention is not limited to this disclosure. Departure may be made therefrom, in a number'of respects within the scope of the invention defined by the claims following said description.
Referring to said drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of abuckle involving the invention, showing; the same connected with a belt, the end. portions only of which appear.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view, and, Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the same.
Like characters refer to like parts throughout the several figures.
The buckle desirably involves in its make up a body member, a locker and a terminal member such as those denoted in a general way respectively bye, 3, and 4e,- and which are ordinarily made from sheet metal or some equivalent substance.
' The body member shown, has a bottom 5, and virtually coextensive therewith, along opposite edges thereof, the parallel flanges 6, both thebottom and the side flanges being upon a longitudinal and comparatively slight curve or arch. The side flanges 6 about midway of their length have lugs or cars 7, to constitute a convenient way of as sociatingr the locker, with the body member. It might be observed at this juncture, however, that the lugs or ears have perforations or holes 8 for the reception of studs or pivots projecting laterally and outwardly from the terminal member.
The locker 3 as shown has a transverse pivot 9 which extends for rocking motion through perforations near the rear ends of the side flanges 6, so the locker 3 is there fore pivotally mounted. Said locker at its free end is slightly bent or curled upwardly as at 10 in order to function somewhat as a cam when it is set.
The terminal member shown comprises two portions, the inner portion being denoted by 11 and the outer portion by 12. At their forward ends these portions are flanged inwardly as at 13 and 1-1 respectively. The fiance 12 is united with the body of its portion by a gentle curve so that the flange 12 will possess a certain degree of resiliency. The outer portion 12 has the side flanges 14 between which is pivoted the clamping member 15 that receives beneath it. an endof the band or belt'16. the outer end of the band or belt, being thrust between the locker 3 and the body 2 so that on endwise movement of the band or belt, the terminal member 4- willbe tipped on its pivot to cause the yieldable flange 12 to act against the outer face of the locker 3 at the a resilient lip connected therewith by a rounded part to engage against the strapgripping endportion of the locker, the inner andthe outer portions of the terminal member being in contact throughout their length, the outer portion of said terminal member being pivoted between said flanges and having ears adjacent its rear end, and
a clamping member pivoted between the ears. v v
2. A buckle comprising a body portion having flanges extending along the opposite sides thereofi a locker pivoted between the side flanges and having a strap-gripping portion,,-aterminal member of sheet metal having a partfolded on itself to produce inner and outer portions, the inner portion having a resilient lip. connected therewith essee? by a rounded part, and the outer portion having a resilient lip connected therewith by a rounded part, the two portions of the terminal member being in contact through outtheir complete lengths the resilient lips acting against the locker at spaced apart points the outer portion o'tsaid terminal member being pivoted between said flanges, and having means associated therewith for the attachment thereto of a belt.
In testimony whereof we afliX our signatures.
JOHN F. CARPMHJL. GEORGE W. TROOP.
