UNITED STATES PATENT OEFIcE,
EMEEY r. WHEELER, or OANNELTON, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN RECIPROCATING CHURNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 143,800, dated October 21,1673; application filed April 24, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMERY T. WHEELER, of Gannelton, in the county of Perry and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ohurns; and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and being a part of this specification, in which Figure l is a perspective view of the vibrating dashers, the churn-cover, and attachments. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through a churn and the cover on the plane of the standards on the latter.
Like letters refer to like parts in both figures.
e The natureof this invention relates to an improvement in the construction of devices attached to a churn-cover for churning butter, so arranged as to be applicable to any stone or wooden churn-body. The invention consists in the noveland peculiar construction and arrangement with relation to a churncover of a pair of vibrating paddles, whose shafts are journaled through the said cover, and in a cam-wheel for vibrating the paddles, in the manner more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawing, A represents the cover of a churn, through which are journaled the paddle-shafts B, carrying slatted paddles G. D is a metallic frame-standard secured to the cover, with a crank-shaft, E, horizontally journaled therein, carrying a camwheel, F, at its inner end. The upper ends of the shafts B are journaled in the ends of ahorizontal bar, D, at the top of the frame. a is a collar on each shaft B, above the cover, to sustain the former in position. Each collar has an arm and wristpin, 0, which wrist-pins are connected by a rod, 1). On the inner edge of this rod two studs are forged to embrace the edge of the cam-wheel, in the rotation of which the connecting-rod is vibrated, and through it the paddles, with a rapid motion, agitating the cream from top to bottom, quickly breaking up the fatty globules, and liberating the butter. The cover is secured to any stone or wooden crock or churn, in which it fits, by a cam, d, at the lower end of a short shaft, 6, journaled through the cover, and provided with an arm, f,-by which the shaft may be rotated so as to project the cam against the inner wall of the churn.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The construction and arrangement, with relation to a churn-cover, A, of the paddle-shafts B B, each carrying a slatted paddle, O, the frame D D, crank-shaft E, canrwheel 1?, collars a a, connecting-rod b, with studs, and wristpins 0 c, as and for the purpose set forth.
EMERY T. WHEELER.
