Description

' said lid.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID STEPHENS, OF RUSHVILLE, ILLINOIS.
CHURN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 406,791, dated July 9, 1889.
Application filed February 27, 1889. Serial No. 301,323. (No model.)
a perspective view of a churn embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a front view showing the churn-body in vertical section, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the driving-shaft and the oscillating levers actuated thereby.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates a suitable base, on the upper side of which I secure, by means of the brackets or angle-irons B, the standards 0 D, the said standards being suitably braced by the beams E, as shown. The inner standards 0 are extended somewhat above the outer standards D, and between the upper ends of said inner standards I mount a spool or idle-pulley F.
The upper end of the churn-body G is closed by a lid I, of any desired construction, and the dasher-rod J passes centrally through the The said dasher-rod is mounted in notches K in the ends of the bearingblocks L, secured between the upper ends of the standards 0, and oscillates in said notches and is held in a vertical position thereby. The dasher-blades M are secured to the lower end of the dasher-rod by means of the .radial arms N, projecting from the dasher-rod, and are arranged at an angle to the said arms, so that they will effectually agitate the cream and gather the butter.
Near the lower ends of the standards E, I secure the transverse pivot-pin O, on which I pivot the lower ends of the oscillating levers P, which extend upward between the said standards, and are provided near their upper ends with the longitudinal slots Q. A double crank-shaft R is j ournaled in the upper ends of the standards D, and has its crankarms passing through and engaging the'said longitudinal slots of the oscillating levers, so that when the said shaft is rotated the levers will be oscillated, as will be readily understood. The shaft is provided at one end with an operating-handle S, and the lateral portions or legs of its crank-arms are flattened, so as to engage the opposite sides of the levers and prevent them from moving longitudinally on the said crank-arms. The slots of the levers may be formed along the central lines of the same; but I prefer to form them by making elongated notches or recesses in the inner sides of the levers, and then securing guard-plates U over the said recesses, as shown. This construction permits the more ready disengagement of the levers and the driving-shaft in the event of either being broken.
The upper ends of the levers are connected with the dasherrod by a belt V, which has one end secured to the upper end of the levers, thence extends over the idle-pulley F to the dasher-rod, around which it is wrapped tightly a number of times, and then passes backward under the idle-pulleyto the upper end of the other lever to which it is secured.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought the operation and advantages of my churn will be readily understood. The cream to be churned is placed in the churnbody, and the driving-shaft is then rapidly rotated in one direction. As the shaft is rotated its crank arms, moving through the slots of the levers, will impart an oscillatory motion to the said levers, and this motion will be communicated to the dasher rod through the belt, so as to vibrate the dasherrod and the dasher-blades carried thereby. By this means the cream in the churn will be alternately thrown in opposite directions, so that it will be violently agitated and the butter quickly formed. hen the butter has been formed, the belt V is unfastened, so that the lid of the churn-body and the dasher can be removed to allow access to be had to the butter.
It will be seen that I have provided a very efficient churn in which the parts are compactly arranged and are strong and durable. The driving-shaft can be easily rotated, and, through the oscillating levers and the belt, will vibrate the dasher very rapidly. The churn-body is secured to the base, so that it P, and the shaft journaled on the standards D D, and having its crank-arms engaging the slots Q of the levers, the lateral portions of the crank-arms being flattened and engaging thesides of the levers, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as 20 my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
DAVID STEPHENS. Witnesses:
EDWARD BERTHOLF, JOHN NEILL.
