Be it known that James A. TILSON, a citizen of the United States. and a resident '01 Chicago Hei hts, in the county of Cook and State oi? Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display tjtands; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact desiription of the same, reference being had to the accoinpai'iying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. it is an object of this invention to provide a display stand with interchangeable tops so that tops of various kinds may be secured upon the same pedestal.
It is a further object of this invention to provide such a stand with interchangeable tops in which the tops shall be securely held in place without danger of accidental displacement and yet may be readily detached when it is desired to change them.
It is a further object of this invention to supply such interchangeable tops upon a stand having a tilting head so that the tops may be placed at any desired angle.
Other and further important objects of my invention will appear from the following specification and the accompanying drawings, in which I have illustrated and described my invention in av preferred form.

The pedestal of the stand consists of shaft 1 mounted upon a base 2 of. any con 'ventional'or desired form. The upper end oi the shaft 1 is bifurcated as shown at 3 in Figures 5 and 8 and in the bifurcation is received the lower edge or flange of a tilting head 5. The flange 6 has a hole 7 through it and through this hole and the sides of the b furcation 3 goes a bolt 8 provided with. a wing nut 11 whereby the head 5 may be secured at any desired angle. I
The head beside the downwardly 6X7 tending flange 6 has two upwardly entendmg flanges The flange 6 extends the whole length of the head but the flanges 9 stop short of the complete length otthe head, thus alilording shoulders 10 and 10 The form of top illustrated in Figure 6 is shown applied to the stand in Figure 3. It is used when the stand is for the purpose of displaying neckties or other articles which can be hung over a single bar. It
consists of a bar 12 ordinarily of rectangular cross section but not necessarily so. The central portion 13 of this bar is reduced to make a pair of shoulders 14 and 1 1 on each side of thebar at each end of the reduced portion. 13. The distance between the shoulders 14 and 14 is equal to the distance be tween the shoulders '10 and 1O and width of the reduced portion 13 is equal to the distance between the flanges 9. Prefer ably also the thickness of the bar 12 at the part 13 is the same as the depth of the grooyebetween the two flanges 9. It will be noted that the shoulders 10 and 143 are inclined and inter-fit and effectively prevent the displacement of the top due to the weight otsupported objects.
The bar 12 therefore may be seated in this groove with the'sides of the reducedportwn 13 in contact with the flanges 9, the shoulders 14 and 145 in contact with the shoulders 10 and 10 the bottom of the reduced portion 13 in contact with the bottom of the groove between the flanges 9, and the top of the reduced portion flush with the top of the flanges 9. Thus a very firm seating 18 obtained and the bar may-be securely held, but at the same time it can readily be removed by shifting it slightly upward and lifting it straight out from the groove. The extensions 30 of the head 5 beyond the shoulders 10 and 10 afiord surfaces which come against the under side of the bar 12 and if the bar should stick a tool may be introduced between one of these surfaces and the bar to pry the bar out of the groove.
If the bar should become marred by this tool the marks will be on the under side of the bar where they will not show.
In the modification illustrated in'Fig. 7 the bar 12 is secured to the under side of a table 15. Although Figure 7 shows a square table, it is obvious that a round, oval or other desired shape of table may be secured to the bar 12 and applied to the pedestal in the same way as the illustrated table.
Another form of top, illustrated in Figure 5, is made by joining the end of a bar 12 by a mortise and teno'n joint as illustrated at 16 to bars 17 in a plane at right angles to the bar 12 but the bars 17 stand at an angle to the surfaces of the bar 12 so that when the head 5 is placed horizontal these bars 17 will occupy two parallel vertical planes but will be themselves oblique sloping steeply upward and to the lett as seen in Figure 5. The bars 17 are provided with notches 18 in which cross rods or cross bars oi any desired pattern may be suspended. The rack thus formed will serve for suspending hosiery or neckties or similar articles.
The form of top illustrated in Figure 4 has a cross bar 20 whose cross section is the shape and size of the cross section of the reduced part of the bar 12. The length of bar 20 is however slightly greater than the length of the reduced portion 13. It is thus adapted to fit in the groove between the flanges 9. At each end of the bar 20 are secured pieces 21 and 22 at right angles to the bar 20. The distance between the pieces 21 and 22 is equal to the length of the reduced portion 18. These pieces afford a bearing across the bar 20 which is analogous to the shoulders 14 of the bar 12 in Figure 6 and when the bar 20 is placed in the groove, the ends of the flanges 9 which afi ord the shoulders 10 will abut against the pieces 21 and 22 and secure the same firm hold that has already been described. By tilting the head 5 the piece 22 may be made to be higher than the piece 21 if desired. Preferably a flange 23 is provided upon the piece 22, so that it is higher than 21. This style of top may serve to support a pair of shoes by hooking the heels of the shoes over this flange and letting the toes thereof rest upon the piece 21.
The form of head illustrated in Figures 9 and 10 does not have the groove aiforded by the two flanges 9. It is however provided with the downwardly extending flange 6 and the hole 7 already described. The main body 25 of this head from which the flange 6 descends is provided with two dowel pins 26. A top of any desired form 27 is provided with two holes at the same distance apart as the two dowel pins 26. The top therefore may be fitted onto the head by slipping the dowel pins into these holes.
I am aware that many other styles of tops besides those which I have illustrated may be secured to the head in the way which I have illustrated. I am also aware that many details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from my invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a display stand, a pedestal, a head secured to said pedestal, upstanding parts upon said head, a top provided with bearing surfaces at an angle to one another, one of said surfaces bearing against the body of said head, the other of said surfaces bearing against the upstanding parts.
2. In a display device, a pedestal, a head, the head having a downwardly extending flange and two upwardly extending flanges, means pivoting the downwardly extending flange to the top of the pedestal, said upwardly extending flanges affording a groove between them, and a top having a portion adapted to fit in said groove whereby said top may be detachably secured to the head.
3. In a display device, a head, a pair of parallel upstanding flanges thereon whereby a groove is provided bounded by said flanges, a shoulder at each end of each of said flanges, a top having a portion of the width and depth of said groove and having shoulders at each end of each side of said. portion, whereby the shoulders upon the top are adapted to contact with the shoulders upon the flanges when the said portion of the top is inserted in said groove.
4-. In a display device, a base, a. pedestal rising from said base, a head pivotally secured to said pedestal, a top comprising a merchandise holder. :1 top support secured to said top and detachably secured by joinery to said head.
