srmx 1mm.
Application filed I'ebruu'ry To all m 7mm. it may concern:
Be it known that I, Joan W. Gmuusou, a citizen of the United States, residing at Schenectady. in the county of Schenectady and State of New York, have invented oertain new and useful lmfirovements in Spark Plugs, of which the fol owing is espeo fiosfi tion This invention relates to; improvements. in
spark plugs.
An important object of this invention'is to preside n' spark plug having e novel form of intensifier urrangedpwithiuthe shell of the same and ads ed for increasingthe intensit oithe spar at the sparking point of the plu so as to assure oomplete combustion of its fuel 'mixture within the cylinder. of. the motor to which :the spark-plug is attached. T
' A further objeet ofthe' invention-ism provide a spark plug hiwing aln insulator formed of upper and lower spaeedsections between which is arranged an intensifierenclosed in an airtight chamber so that the current in making the gap in-the intensifier will not be subjected to (letrimentul air currents.
-A further object of this invention is to "provide a spark plugl having uppernnd low or insulator sections; the lower insulator sec tion being substantially in the form of asphere so that the same will expend-and eontvuot equally in all directions.
A further object of the invention is to provide a spark plug wherein; the stationary electrode of the sumehas its free-endportions widened and flattened tola thln ed so as to increase theeifieieneyof the span upon makingthefinnlgap.
A further ob'ect of this invention is -to provide nspark' lug which-maybe readily taken apart for t e purpose ofuelenmng. the some. Further objects and advantages of: the invention will hen pareut'duriugthe' course of-the following esqription. v In the aceompan'ym drawing part of this epplicetion and- .m which:
' numerals are emgloyed to designate like parts throughout-t e slune.
Figure .1 is a. vertical section-through a spn-rk plug embodylngthe invention Figure-'2 is a grouprperspeotive; i themsulator and the intensifier embod ed. mthe 19, mo. semi No. new.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary perspective of the spark plug.
Inthe drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of the invent-ion, the numeral 5' generally designates one cylinder ofan internal v combustion engine provided, as illustrated in l igurel, with the usual openin for receivmg e spar'k plug; The improve spark plug formmg vthe subject matter of this invention 15 provided with a shell 6 having its lower portion exterior-1y screw-threaded, as indigated at 7, so that-the same 'me he threaded into the spark plug opening 0 the cylinder. Theupper ortion of the cylindrical shell 6 ls-polyg'onn sidedlasrindieated at 8, so as to form a gripping surface for a, wrench where- Ey thedplug may be applied endremoved, as eslre A substantially spherieal insulator 9 of 7' into gnsdiigbt engagement with the annular shoulder 10 and-the adjacent portion of the shell by a nipple v14 which isthreaded into the upper portion of the shell 8. "By this construction the substantiailly spherical insulator 9 is but detachubly .held withinnthe shell and is allowed to evenly and uniformly expand and contract as the result of theheat rediated the motor.
.Aa partieulsrlj' illustrated-in Figure 1, the upper irisulfltorl'fiis partly arranged wvithin themp I end is limite in its "downward movement by an interiorly arrsnged annular shoulder 16 having an annular gasket 17 mounted thereon for providing :a gasstight connection betyreenthe'upperinsulator-15nd the rtion of-the nipple 14 r nipple. "The. upper insulatoris held in contact with the-adj eeent-portion-of the. mp-
ple' a ferrule or looking p18 having thre eden nt, with the up r .por-' tion (lithe-n1 e endprovided w an inwardly ex -mnulerfflimge 19 having 'oontact with-the upper end of the insulator 15. The u per-insulator is thus seeurelyaattlohed to "1 4;
any of the parts which may become broken as the result of continued use or an accident.
Further, the improved spark plug in manufacture is not appreciably larger than the spark plug now generally in use and will not therefore be rendered difiicult to apply or remove.
It is to be understood that the form of the invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred embodiment of the same and that such minor changes in construction and arrangement of parts may be made as will remain within the spirit of the invention and the scope of what is claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A spark plug including a shell, an insulator arranged within the same, a cylindrical nipple threaded into the upper portion of the shell and securing said insulator in position, a second insulator secured to the upper portion of said nipple, upper and lower conductors carried by said first and second named insulators and having their adjacent ends arranged in spaced relation, a cylindrical member confined, between the opposed sides of said first and second named insulators and having a longitudinally extending bore, said cylindrical member being arranged in spaced relation to the sides of said nipple for forming an outer annular chamber, and contact elements arranged within the bore of said cylindrical member.
2. A spark plug including a shell, a lower insulator arranged within the same, an upper insulator arranged in spaced relation to said first named insulator, a metallic disk mounted upon the lower insulator and having a centrally arranged head, a conductor extending through said lower insulator and engaged with the head of said disk, an inter mediate insulator confined between the first and second named insulators and having one end engaged with said disk, and contact elements arranged within said intermediate insulator.
3. A spark plug including a shell, an insulator arranged within the shell, a nipple threaded into the shell for securing. the insulator in position, an upper insulator having its lower portion secured Within the upper portion of said nipple, a ferrule threaded onto the upper portion of the nipple and having an inwardly extending flange in contact with the upper side of said upper insulator, a terminal post extending through the upper insulator and terminating at the in ner end of the same, an intermediate insulater of cylindrical formation arranged between the first and second named insulators, a metallic disk mounted upon the upper end of the first named insulator and having a centrally arranged hollow head, a pair of contact elements arranged within said intermediate insulator and having electrical contact with the centrally arranged head of said disk, one of said elements being arranged in spaced relation to the inner end of said terminal post, said intermediate insulator being spaced inwardly from the sides of said nipple for providing an annular air chamber whereby a uniform temperature is maintained within said inter mediate insulator, and an electrode carried by the first named insulator and having its upper end snugly arranged within the centrally arranged head of said disk.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
JOHN W. GLEASON. [1,. 5.]
