To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRED A. ROBINSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Boylston, in the county of Worcester and State of lvlassacl'iusetts, have invented a new and useful Combination Chair and Table, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an article of furniture which may be used either as a chair or a table, and with slight modification may also be used as a step ladder. l/Vhen the device is not in use it may also be folded to a compact condition so that it may be easily stored in a small space.

It is the object of my invention to provide a combination chair and table of such construction that it may be easily and conveniently changed from one article to the other, that the parts may be firmly held in each of their operative positions, and that it may be easily and economically manufactured.

\Vith these general objects in view, my invention comprises certain arrangements and combinations of'parts which will be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

A preferred form of my invention, together with a slight modification or addition thereto, are shown in the drawings in which Fig. l is a side elevation of the device arranged as a rocking chair;

Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the article shown in Fig. 1

Fig. 3 is a plan view of the seat of the chair taken along the line 33 in Fig. 1;

Fig. 4 shows the device arranged as a table;

Fig. 5 shows a slightly modified or amplified construction arranged as a step ladder, and

Fig. 6 shows the construction of Fig. 1 in folded position.

Referring particularly to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, I have shown a rocking-chair comprising a back 10, a pair of rockers 11, a pair of front legs or supports 12 and seat rails 13 to which are secured the seat slats 14. A pair of brace bars 15 are pivoted at 16 on the back 10 and are connected by cross rods 17 and 18. The rod 18 rests upon the rear ends of the rockers 11 and is held against the rockers by hooks 19 secured in the upper edges thereof.

The usual cross rods 20 and 21 rigidly connect the rockers 11 to each other and a cross rod 22 is secured in the legs 12 and extends loosely through the front ends of the rockers 11, thus providing a hinge connectlOII bG DWGGII the legs 12 and the rockers 11. A similar cross rod 23 is secured in the upper ends of the legs 12 and forms a pivotal support for the front ends of the seat bars 13. t their rear ends, the bars 13 are pivotally secured by screws 2% to a cross piece 25 fixed to the front side of the back 10. The lower edge of the back 10 is received n notches 26 in the rockers 11 and the back is suitably secured in position, as by hooks 27 on the back and screw eyes 28 in the rockers. All parts are thus secured firmly in position and alight and comfortable folding rocking chair is provided. A

In Fig. 1 I have shown the same device arranged as a table, the back 10 forming the table top, the brace bars 15 forming supporting legs at one end of the table and the rockers 11 forming the legs at the op posite end of the table. The braces 15 are suitably secured in position, as by one or more hooks 29 pivoted at 30 to the braces and engaging screw eyes 31 in the edge of the back or table top 10.

The upper ends of the rockers 11 engage the under side of the top 10 and are held in position by a recessed spring rod 32 secured in the cross piece 13 and the front legs 12 move to the position shown in Fig. 1 and form a brace for the rockers 11, being preferably secured thereto by a hook 37 and screw eye 38 on the cross rods 23 and 21 respectively.

The back part 10 is thus firmly supported as a table top, the transformation from one article to the other being very easily effected.

In Fig. 5 I have shown another use to which my invention is adapted. For this purpose a series of steps 33 are secured between the braces 15. The parts are moved to the relative position shown in Fig. 5 and pairs of pins or studs 34 are provided in the upper edges of the rockers 11 near the front ends thereof to receive the cross rod 18. Hooks 35 on the side brace 13 also engage screw eyes 36 in the under side of the part 10 so that the parts 10 and 1.3 may be held rigidly in the position shown in the drawing. The device thus assembled forms a The side bars convenient and practicable step ladder for household purposes.

The parts 33, 34%, 35 and 36 are shown only in Fig. 5, and are omitted for the sake of clearness in Figs. 1 to l in which they might otherwise appear.

Having thus described my invention, it will be seen that I have provided a convenient article of folding furniture particularly adapted for small apartments and also for camps and summer cottages. It will also be seen that the parts are simple and easily made and that the device may be readily folded for shipment and storage. The small space occupied by the parts in folded position is clearly indicated in Fig. 6. i

It will be further evident that changes and moc'iifications can be made in my invention by those skilled in the art within the spirit and scope thereof as set forth in the claims, and I do not wish to be otherwise limited to the details herein disclosed but what I claim is 1. A combination chair and table comprising a broad flat member, a pair of braces rigidly secured together and pivoted to said member near one end thereof, a seat hinged to said member at an. intermediate point thereof, a pair of rockers secured to each other, a pair of legs pivoted to the front ends of said seat and of said rockers, means to secure said braces to said member at a fixed .angle to rigidly support one end of said member as a table, means to hold the rear ends of said rockers against the under side of said member, and means to hold said rockers at a fixed angle to said member to rigidly support the other end of said member as a table.

A combination chair and table comprising a broad flat member, a pair of braces rigidly secured together and pivoted to said member near one end thereof, a seat hinged to said member at an intermediate point thereof, a pair of rockers secured to each other, a pair of legs pivoted to the front ends of said seat and of said rockers, means to secure said braces to said member at a fixed angle, to rigidly support one end of said member as a table, means to hold the rear ends of said rockers against the under side of said member and means to secure said seat and legs to said rockers in position to brace said rockers and thereby rigidly support the other end of said member as a table.

3. A combination article of furniture comprising a broad fiat member, a pair of braces rigidly secured together and pivoted to said member near one end thereof, a seat hinged to said member at an intermediate point thereof, a pair of rockers secured to each other, a pair of legs pivoted to the front ends of said seat and of said rockers, means to hold said seat flat against said member when the article is in the step-ladder formation, means to secure said braces and roe :ers in fixed longitudinal relation to rigidly hold said legs in fixed angular relation to said seat and flat member, and a series of steps secured between said braces.
