YUIBIE WILLIAM.ROGERS, OF ST, LOUIS, MISSOURI.
COMBINATION-CHAIR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 15, 1919.
Application filed November 7, 1918. Serial No. 261,576.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, YUBLE WILLIAM Roonns, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combination-Chairs, of which the fo-1 lowing is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in combination chairs in which the backs may be placed in such a position as to form a desk; and the object of my improvement is to produce a chair in which, when the back is elevated on its hinges to form a table surface the same may be swung to and fro, making it convenient in sitting on and rising from its seat.
I attain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which 1 Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device when used as a seat at a table. Fig. 2 is a view of the device as it appears when used as an ordinary chair. Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the two views.
Numeral 1 01": the drawing represents the seat of the device having a support 2 rigidly fixed near the upper corner of said seat; thene is a horizontal bar 3 having one of its ends pivotally fixed by means of a pivot 4: near the upper end of support 2, a fork 5 in the free end of horizontal bar 3 cooperates wvith a dowel at the free end of a second support 6 which is secured to a corresponding corner of seat 1 by means of a hinge 7.
There is a back 8 secured to horizontal bar 3 by means of hinges 9. When back 8 is elevated on its hinges 9 to form a table surface, it is held in an elevated position by means of a swivel bar 10 which is pivoted to the central part of the upper side of hori zontal bar 3.
There is a groove 11 in the upper end of support 2, into which swings the shoulder of pivot 4, to prevent the table from swinging when used as a desk; additional firmness may be had by moving support 6 on its hinges 7 to engage fork 5 of horizontal bar 3.
A clamp 12 is secured to the side of back 8 to keep support6 in an upright position when the device is used as an ordinary chair as shown in Fig. 2.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim is- A combination chair comprising a seat having a support rigidly fixed near one of its upper corners, a horizontal bar having one of its ends pivotally fixed near the upper end of said support; the free end of said horizontal bar cooperating with the free end of a hinged support which is secured to an opposite corresponding corner of said seat;
a back having a flat surface pivotally connected with said horizontal bar, and suitable means for holding said back in a table top position, substantially as described.
