; LooK.
Be it known that-we Josnrrr 153 a specification.
This invention relates to a IIIOItlSGJOCk for doors, trunks, etc and the primaryobthe invention g are to; prouide a lock forth, which; requires a 4 predetermined 4 L justment o1 {the regulating; hand to, set the tumblen to a particularr position. before the bolt can be; thrown, by th k6y j Vl1lCh iricludes a. hinged cover plate having disguised latching neans and that cannot be closed until the regulating handz lias beeinshiftedhto throw the tumbler from theadjusted positiomand 'which permits of the removal of the keyonly after the lookingoperation.
Further objects of the L invention are p to produce a lock having. a duplexloclring bolt :utuated by means of a key after a predeterniined adjustmentof the tumbler, which is simple in itsconstruptionand arrangement, durable and etlicient in itsuse, and comparati vely inexpensive to manut'act ure. v
Vilith these and other objects in yieyv, which will more fully appearv the nature of the invention is betterunderstood, the consists Pin-combination, arrangement and construction of parts hereinafter j descrihed, pointed out in theappended claims and illustrated in the accompanyingdrawing. it being understood that;v many changes may he made in. the size and proportion of the everal parts anddetailsofconstruction Willis-i the scope of the appended without departing from theprinciple ,orsacriticing; any of the advantagesof theinvention.
In the drawing forming aportionpt this specification and wherein like numerals or corresponding parts reference designate throughout the several v1eWs:
Figure 1 is a front'yiew of a lock in accordancewith this invention, showing one hasp and the cover plate in the open position. Figure 2 is an end View of the casing cover and associated parts.

A pair of spacedhasps and mounted on the otherof the, relatively. inoyable nien ilbers is liingedly connectedaas at 13, toan apertured securing plate 1 14. flEach fo'fthe h'asps 11 and 12 is proyided on its inner face with a. staple 15 adapted to extend through one of the slots 16 provided therefor-, in the a l sen i v curved ends 17 and 18 of the lockingiboltfi when in. the. locked; position.
The, ourvede ds 1 bolt 6 extend in opposi vto each other; providing, 1 when the, latter is shifted to the locked position, the downward .i 0' ememe n1e end1'7 and the hupwar'd movement ofjthe end 18, throughrespeotiye' staples 16onthe-hasps11 and 12. .Thebolt 6. is formedavith a depending lug. 19, atlj acentvto thev curved end 17, and is fadapted for engagement with the Ward oi the key during the lockingoperati'on. v ii" A tumblrQO is 'pivotally mounted, as.; at 21., in the lowerportionof the. casingfcover 9, and is operated by a toggle mechanism 22 rigidly, connectedby a pin 23 to an'findicae tor handfll ,pin 13 heingfjournalled' the lock casing. A graduated scale. 25 is formed 7 on the outer lface or thecasing' cove-r}9, by which the handa2-lq is; set to. operate thetoggle inechanismjQQ and: shift the tumbler: 2O relative to the; shoulder 26 formed on the bolt 6 adjaoentto the end18 and perniit of The tumbler 20 toggle mechanism 22 and locking bolt 6, are all mounted on the inner face of the casing cover 9. The toggle mechanism 22 is pivotally connected, as at 27, to the tumbler 20. By vvarying the connection of the indicator hand 24, on the outer face of the casing cover 9, with the toggle mech- Land, .1801 the locking anism 22, the indicator hand 24- must be shifted to a predetermined point on the graduated scale 25 before the tumbler 20 is properly positioned relative to the shoulder 26 to permit of the shifting of the bolt 6 to the unlocked position. A knowledge of the indicator hand adjustment is therefore required before the bolt 6 can be shifted by the key. Different keys may also be employed by shaping the wards thereof to fit projecting ridges, as indicated at 11.0 in its path of travel permitting only the operation of a key having corresponding notches.
A cover plate 28 is hinged to the lower portion of the casing cover 9 and is provided with a staple 29 adapted to be engaged by the latch 30 through the slot 31 in the upper portion of the casing 9. A flat spring is mounted on the inner face of the cover plate 28 and is provided for the purpose of throwing the latter to the open position when the latch 30 is released. The inner face of the plate 28 is further providedwith a transverse groove to clear the indicator hand 2 f when the plate 28 is in the closed position. The position of the groove 33 in the plate 28 is such that the indicator hand 2% must be shifted from the adjusted position before the plate 28 can be closed. "By this arrangement the indicator hand 2% can never be inadvertently left in the adjusted position thereb areventin its ooeration bi an 7 y l a: l J
unauthorized person even if provided with the key.
The latch 30 is shiftably mounted in a pair of spaced aperture lugs 34: and carries a coil spring 35 mounted therebetween. The action of the spring 35 normally holds the latch 30 in the latched position. The latch 30 is provided with an actuating arm 36 I laterally slidable in a groove 3'? formed in a corner of the casing 1 in the wall at. The construction of the arm 36 is such that when in the latched position it ostensibly forms a portion of the wall 4 which is not readily detected by one not acquainted with its construction.
Besides assuring the positioning of the indicator hand 24-. from the adjusted position, as above stated, the closure of the cover plate 28 also provides for the concealment of the key hole 38, and for the protection of the indicator hand 24 and scale 25.
The bolt 6 is formed with an angularly disposed edge 39 which abuts against the pin 23 to limit the movement of the bolt when shifted to the unlocked position, and a stud 40 is fixed in the casing 1 to engage the curved end 1'? of the bolt 6 to limit its movement when shifted to the locked position.
When the bolt 6 is thrown into the unlocked position by the key, the latter will hold the bolt in such position and cannot be removed from the lock until the key is returned to permit of its removal from the key hole 38. Upon such return movement of the key, however, the action of the spring 3 in.
engagement with the edge 5 of the bolt 6,
will automatically shift the bolt to the locked position.
The wall 4t of the casing l is provided at each side, thereof with a laterally projecting apertured ear 4:1 by which the casing 1 and associated parts carried thereby are secured in position.
iiVhat-we claim is l. A look comprising a casing, a locking bolt therein and shiftable to and from locking position, said bolt having oppositely disposed ends, a tumbler controlling the movement of the bolt, hasp elements adapted to extend into the casing and engaged and locked by said ends when the latter are shifted to locking position, means for adjusting the tumbler to permit of the shifting of the bolt to release the hasp elements, an indicasaid adjusting device.
3. A lock comprising a pivoted locking element, shiftable to and from locking posi tion, means engaged by said element for locking an object therewith, a tui'ubler controlling the movement of said element, an adjusting device for said tumbler to permit of the shifting of said element to release said means, and an indicator element for said adjusting device, and a releasable element for concealing said indicator element.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures.
