WILLIAM A. JOHNSON, FRANK V. JOHNSON, AND H. SMITH NORTH, OF
OXFORD, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENTIN THE MODES 0F FASTENING BUTTONS. v
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 143,512, dated October 7, 1873; application filed February 15, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM A. J oHN- soN, FRANK V. JoHNsoN, and H. SMITH WORTH, of Oxford, in the county of Chester and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Buttons; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a View of the front side of the button and turned-down part of the plate. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same.
Similar letters of reference in the accompanying drawings denote the same parts.
This invention belongs to that class of devices used for fastening buttons to cloth, by other means than sewing, in such manner that the button cannot be separated from the cloth except by cutting it out. The invention consists in fastening the button to the cloth by means of an eyelet passing through the button and cloth, and also through a plate placed on the opposite side of the cloth from the button, and turned around the edge of the cloth, and fastened thereto on the same side as the button all which I will now proceed to describe.
In the drawing, A is the button; B, the eye let; 0, the cloth; and D, the plate, which may be cloth or metal. The eyelet is passed through the button, cloth, and plate, and then riveted down upon the latter, thus fastening the button most securely to the cloth. The plate is turned around the edge of the cloth, and its front edge is fastened to the cloth in the vicinity of the button by means of teeth 0 or other sufficient devices. If cloth were used instead of the plate its edge could be sewed to the fabric.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, is
The combination of the button, eyelet, and plate D, having a part turned over the front edge of the cloth, substantially as described.
