My invention relates more especially to that class of buttons used in uniting the two edges the separate parts of the bosoinand.has for its object to so arrange the same, as to be readily introduced, and to firmly hold the separate parts of the cloth one against the other; and to that end the improvement con-v sists in providing the button with a novelshaped tongue, adapted to pass through the button-hole in thecloth, the tongue acting to compress the cloth against the parallel surface of the button, whereby-the shank of the tongue is secured within and through the buttonhole, thus uniting the two parts of the cloth..

1n the drawing, A represents the button proper, which may be of any known forth, and of any requisite design of configurtffion; B is the tongue, which is made of sheet metal, and

is permanently-attached to the inner face of the button. 'lhis tongue is bent at a right angle to the face, and at a point near midway between the center and periphery of the button, forming a shank, a, as shown in Fig. 2. This shank extends from the'face of the but ton a slight distance, and is there bent at an obtuse angle toward the periphery of the but ton, as shown at b, the said bent position ex-' tending past the center of the button to a point near midway between its center andperiphery, and is there bent to a parallel with the face of the button, and extends to a point slightly beyond the periphery, as shown at c.
