CHICKEN COOP.
Application led October 29, 1,921. Serial No. 511,339.
To all/*whom it may concern."
ABe it known that'IsADomi VANDERBEGK, is a citizen of the United States, residing 'at Huntsville, in the county of Randolph and State of Missouri, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Chicken Coop, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in coops for various fowls such as chickens, ducks and the like, and particularly to closures for such coops, the purpose being generally to provide a closure which may be partially removed or opened to permit the placing or removal of certain of the fowls without danger of the others getting free.
A further object is to produce a closure which is provided with a fastening' means which cannot be accidentally released to permit the closure to be unintentionally opened to free the fowls within the coop.
A further object is to provide a closure, which while incapable of being accidentally released, may, by the simple application of a tool such as a screw-driver, be quickly operated, and a further object is to pro-vide a closure which is simple in structure and inode of operation, yet which securely maintains the coop in closed condition.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is a top perspective view of the coop embodying my improved closure;
Figure 2 is a detail transverse sectional View through a portion of the coop having the closure fastening device.
Figure 3 is a central longitudinal sectional view and,
Figure l is an end view of the coop. Referring now more specifically to the drawings by numerals of reference in which the characters refer to like parts throughout the several views, 2 designates generally the coop, which is usually rectangular in form and comprises side members fl, end members 6, a bottom 8 and top 9, each of which, eX- cept the bott-om or floor member 8 is slatted as is common in this type of coop.
The present invention is directed toward the closure and the means by which it is securely fastened in position and to this end, I have made provisionfor removring or partly removingby a longitudinal sliding movement, one of the slats which combine With the remainder to form the slatted top member 9. f
By preference, I provide the central slat 10 as forming the removable closure, and provide the top edge of the upper slats 12 ofthe end members 6 and the top edgeof the upper slat 14e of a central partition 15 arranged transversely of the coop with rectangular recesses 16, all of which are arranged in longitudinal alinement, and receive the closure slat 10.
The slat 10 is secured in the recesses 16 of the slats 12 of the end members 6, against upward movement by means of straps 18 eX- tending across said recesses and secured by screws or other suitable fastening means 19. The slat is of less thickness than the depth of the recess so that freedom of movement of the slat is permitted.
Centrally of its length, or, so arranged that it lies over the upper slat member 14 of partition 15, the slat closure 10 is provided with an aperture 22 which is adapted to receive the head 24 of a screw threaded locking bolt 26 threaded in a stra-p 28 which spans the recess 16 and is secured at its ends by screws 29 or the like, the free or upper end being accessible for actuation by a screw driver or similar tool and provided with a kerf 30.
The screw threaded opening which receives the bolt 26 is countersunk to provide a recess 32 which receives the head 24 of said bolt, so that when it is turned in a direction to retract the head from the aperture 22, it will be entirely clear from interference with the sliding vmovements of the said slat 10.
It will therefor be clear that when the bolt 26-is in the position illustrated in Figure 2, it rests within the aperture 22 which prevents longitudinal movement of the closure slat, but when said bolt is retracted so that the head rests within the recess 32, the slat 10 is free to be slid longitudinally the desired distance to place or remove a fowl in or from the coop.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect -by Letters Patent is 1. In a coop structure, a central transverse member having an upper closure slat receiving recess, a closure slat longitudi nally movable within said recess and provided with an aperture intermediate its ends, a strap secured to said central transverse member and spanning said recess, a
locking` bolt'perpendicular y to said strap and "ihovablefintof and -`outy f-said aperture in the closureJ slat, a head on said bjolt and said strap `being provided With a countermember, said end, and transverse members` bengaprovided :with longitudinally alined recesses in lthe upper face of each, a closure a slat longitudinally movable in said recesses *andr vprovided with anvaperture adjacent ythe central transverse member vvhen the slat is in normally closed position, a strap spanl5 ning the, recessv in eacho'l thev end members, a ystrap secured to said central transverse member and spanning kthe recess therein, a threaded'V locking iidevice mounted in and perpendicular tosaid strap and movable into and out of said aperture in the closure s lat, andmeansWhereby the locking device may be turned l'tb' project the same into or' retract it from said closure slat aperture.
vIn testimony vwhereof l aiiii myl signa 25l ture.
