T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that PHILIP A. VVEIGEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Riverton, in the county of Burlington and State of New Jersey, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Converting Lace Shoes to Button Shoes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in the method of converting a lace shoe to a button shoe.

The principal object of the invention is to provide adjustable means to conveniently convert a. lace shoe, preferably a ladies, to a button. shoe, and at the same time maintain a symetrical line along the front seam of said shoe.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the class described which is adapted for use either with a lace or a button shoe.

Another object is to make my invention. of av simple and durable construction and so that it can be manufactured and sold at a reasonably low cost.

These objects and other advantageous ends, which will be described hereinafter, I attain in the following manner, references being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:-

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a ladies lace shoe converted into a button shoe by means of my device;

Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional view through an eyelet in the upper or top of the shoe with an end portion of the device in position; and

Figure 3 is an enlarged perspective View illustrating the opposite end and remaining portion of the device.

Referring now in detail to the several figures of the drawing, wherein like numerals of reference refer to like partsthroughout the views, 10 represents a conventional ladies shoe or boot, provided with the usual front opening 11 in the top 12 thereof, a tongue 18 and the duplicate rows of eyelets 1 1 and 15.

My improved fastening and convertible means consist of a shoe button 16, an integral link 17 connecting said button 16 to an integral link 18 of a swivelling knurled sleeve 19, interiorly threaded to engage an exteriorly threaded stem 20. A small linked chain, cord or fabric 21, (shown in the drawing as a chain), is secured in any suitable manner to the opposite end of said stem 20.

The said chain 21 at its opposite terminal is adapted for engagement to one end 22 of an interiorly threaded sleeve 24:. Said sleeve 2% is bellshaped in form and as aforesaid is interiorly threaded to engagethe exterior threads of a stud 23. Said sleeve 2% is positioned over said stud 23 and by means of the flanges 25-25 thereon will impinge against the inner portion of'theleather of the top of the shoe 10, adjacent the eyelets 14:. A shoe button 26 is secured to the stud by means of an integral link 27 on said stud being linked with an integral link 28 on said button 26.

In use :T he eyelets 15, for example, are extracted and the apertures left by such eyelet removal are cut and bound to form buttonlioles 29. A section of the chain 21, carrying the stem 20 and knurled sleeve 19 and button 16 is inserted in a. buttonhole 29, so that said button impinges against the outer surface of said buttonhole. The opposite end of the chain 21, carrying the stud 23 and button 26 is inserted in an opposite eyelet 14. The sleeve 24: having the portion 22 for connection with the opposite end. of.

the chain 21 is then threaded over the stud so that the flanges 2525 on said sleeve 24; impinge against the inner portion of the leather of the top of the shoe 10, adjacent said eyelets 14; the said chain 21 being first connected with the portion 22 of said sleeve 2 1:.

Adjustment of the length of said chain 21 is made by means of the knurled sleeve 19 and stem 20; and in this way such adjustment may be made as will maintain the symetrical line along the front seam or opening 11 of the shoe, a feature of novelty and utility.

Ofttimes users of button shoes find it necessary to set the buttons either forward or backward in order to properly fit their insteps, this invariable results in changing the line of the front seam of the shoe and destroying the symmetry thereof.

As beforesaid the chain 21 may be composed either of links, or a cord or fabric may be employed in lieu of a chain.

A slight movement of the knurled sleeve 19 will slacken the chain 21 so that it may be disengaged from the sleeve 2% for removal.

The views of the device shown in Figs. 2 and 3 are greatly enlarged.

Minor details, not involving invention, may be made in the construction of said device without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the hereinafter appended claims.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A device of the class described, comprising buttons, members, connected with said buttons, adapted for insertion through aligned openings in the front flaps of a shoe, means to connect said members on a transverse plane and means to adjust the tension of said connecting means, substantially as described.

2. A device oi. the class described, com prising buttons, members, swivelly connected with said buttons, adapted for insertion through aligned openings in the front flaps of a shoe, flexible means to connect said members transversely of said front flaps, and means to adjust the tension of said connecting means, substantially as described.

3. A device of the class described, comprising a button, a threaded stem connected with said button adapted to be inserted through an opening in the front flap of a shoe, a duplicate button, a threaded stud connected with said button adapted to be inserted through an aligned opening in the opposite flap of said shoe, a threaded sleeve on said stud, means to connect said sleeve and said stem transversely of said front flaps, and means to adjust the tension of said connecting means, substantially as described.

A device of the class described, comprising a button, a threaded stein connected with said button adapted to be inserted through an opening in the front flap of a shoe, a threaded sleeve on said member, a duplicate button, a threaded stud connected with said button adapted to be inserted through an aligned opening in the opposite flap of said shoe, a threaded sleeve on said stud, means to connect said sleeve and said stem transversely of said front flaps, said sleeve providing means for adjusting the tension of said connecting means, substantially as described.
