ATTO R N EY MW E N n w FRANK GAMBINO, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINATION-OPERATED LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 22, 1922.
Application filed November 8, 1921. Serial No. 513,772.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK GAMBINO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combination-Operated Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a lock, the bolts of which are adapted to be actuated by a key which is permanently attached to the lock but which cannot be actuated until certain parts are moved into a certain position.
"Another object of the invention 1s to provide the lock with a pair of bolts, each bolt being actuated by a key of the type above mentioned and the controlling means of which are differently arranged so that the combinations of both keys must be known before the door or barrier can be opened.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illus-. trated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which 2- Figure 1 is a front view of a lock provided with a single bolt and operated by my improved key.
Figure S2 is a section approximately on line 22 of Figure 1. I
Figures 3, 4, (S and 7 are detail views.
Figures 8 and 9 are views of a modificatiou, and i Figure 10 is a side elevation of my invention partly in section.
Referring to the first form of the invention 1 indicates a lock casing, the bolt 2 of which is actuated in any desired or suitable manner by the knob 3 which is located on one side of the casing. The shank 4. of this knob has an end located within the casing and this end is provided with a socket 5, though instead of a socket it may be provided with a projection. A cylindrical key casing (S is suitably secured to the cover plate of the lock casing, over the opening 7 in the cover plate, the socketed end of the shank t being aligned with the opening in the cylindrical key casing. This cylindrical key caslng 6 rot-atably receives the nested cups 8, each of which has a keyhole shaped opening 9 in its bottom, the o enin s re 'sterin with each other and with an openiri g in th% cas ng 6. The key 10 is provided with a series of projections 11 which are so arranged that the key cannot be moved longituohnally until the key-hole shaped open- 1ngs 1n the cups are in alignment. The bottoms of the cups are spaced apart to receive the projections. The flanged outer ends of the cups are provided with the usual combination characters 12 so that these cups can be properly placed by a person knowing the combination to place the holes in alignment so that the key can be moved longitudinally to place the extension 13 at its inner end in the socket of the shank. Then by turning the key the shank will be rotated to move the bolt. In the locked position of the parts the projections on the key engage the bottoms of the cups so that the key is held out of engagement with the shank. Of course if the shank is provided with a proection the end of the key must be provided wlth a socket to receive the same. The characters on the key 10 are not employed in the operation of the lock but act as a barrier to a person notfamiliar with the combination thereof.
In the modification the lock 1 is provided with two bolts 2 and a combination key 14 is provided for each bolt. These keys are made similar to that above described though the combinations are different so that if a person should accidentally move the parts of one key to place it in engagement with the shank of one bolt he would still have to discover the proper position of the parts of the other key before he could open the door, the bolts 2 being actuated by the knobs 3, the shanks 4 being provided with a socket 5'. The key casing is secured to the cover plate of the lock casing as shown in Figure 9 and the cups 8 are constructed the same as shown in Figure 2. The'extensions 14: are provided on the inner ends of said keys for the same purpose as above described for extension 13.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
\Vhat I claim is In combination with a lock and its bolt, a cylindrical casing disposed at a right angle to said lock and secured thereto, a cup rotatably secured to one end of said casing, a pair of cups, one of which is adapted to rest in the other and one to rest within the first mentioned cup, each cup is provided with a keyhole shaped opening in its bottom and the rounded portion of each opening being adapted to register-with each other but I spaced therefrom, a key provided with 15 spaced projections intermediate of its ends for engaging said openings when the rectangular portions thereof are in alignment to permit the longitudinal movement of the key and an extension on one end of said vkey 20 for the purpose specified, and means 'opposing the cylindrical key casing and secured to the opposite side of the lock for operat- 1ng[sa1d bolt on that side.
n testimony whereof I afiix my signature. 25
