PERMUTATIDN PADLOCK.

JACOB H. FRYEB', 0F SYRACUSE, NEW YRK.
PERMUTATION-PADLOCK.
Application led January 6, 1919.
T 0 all whom 'it may conca/vt.' l
Be it known that I, Jason H. FRYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Permutation-Padlocks, of which the following is a specification.
rl'his invention relates to a permutation or combination pad lock and an object of the invention is to simplify the construction of locks of this nature, without in any way detracting from the efficiency thereof, resulting in the provision of a lock which is comparatively simple in construction, durable, may be manufactured at a low cost and one which removes, to a great extent, the liability of operation thereof by a person not knowing the combination of the lock.
Another object of this invention is to provide a combination pad lock in which the shackle is entirely removed from the lock casing to unlock the lock, and to provide a plurality of disk tumblers held in spaced relation by substantially semi-circular spacing members and adapted to engage in recesses in the shackle and be operated through the medium of pins carried by the rotary tumbler.
@ther objects of the invention will appear in the following detailed rdescription taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this Speciication and in which drawing:
Figure l is a side elevation of the lock.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the lock.
Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4f is a cross section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 'is a bottom plan of the lock.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates the shell or body of the padlock which is substantially cylindrical in shape and has its upper end closed by a plug 2 which is threaded into the upper end of the casing and is provided with suitable openings to permit insertion therethrough of the Shanks 3 and 4 of the shackle 5. The casing 1 is provided with diametrically opposed inwardly extending projections 6 hav: ing recesses therein to form seats for the shanks 3 and 4 of the shackle 5 and the innermost longitudinal portion of the shank 3 of the shackle 5 is provided with an elon- Specification of Letters Patent.

in the disk tumblers 8, 9 and l0. The disk Y tumblers 8 and 9 are rotatably mounted upon a bolt 11 which extends axially through the casing l and is threaded through the plug 2, being locked therein against removal, y a pin 12 which extends diametrically through the bolt as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing.
The disk tumblers 8 and 9 are held in proper spaced relation by substantially semicircular spacing members 13, a pair of which is positioned between the-facing sides of the tumblers. The edges of the spacing members 13 engage the sides of the projec-v tions 6 to prevent accidental displacement of the spacin members during operation of the lock anc they are provided with relatively large substantially semi-circular cut out portions 14 in their inner edges which form an arcuate path of sufficient diameter to permit unimpeded rotation of the disk tumbler-s and movement of the tumbler operating pins therein. r1`he uppermost tumbler 8 has a single operating pin l5 attached thereto and extending downwardly therefrom, being adapted to be engaged with the upwardly extending operating pin 16 carried by the disk tumbler 9. A depending operating pin 17 is also carried by the disk tumbler 9 and is adapted for engagement with the upstanding operating pin 18 carried by the lowermost disk tumbler 10. This disk tumbler 10 is formed upon the closure or disk 19 which closes the bottom of the casing 1 and which is rotatabl mounted upon the bolt 1l. The disk 19 1S provided with graduations 2O upon its under surface which have characterizing indicia positioned in close proximity thereto and the periphery of the disk is also provided with graduations 21 corresponding to the graduations 20 and adapted for coaction with an arrow 22 carried by the casing 1 to permit the properV adjustment of the disk 19 and consequently of the disk tumblers 8, 9 and 10 to permit the unlocking and locking of the lock. The shank 4 of the shackle 5 is provided with a plurality of spaced recesses adapted to receive therein portions of the disk tumblers 8, 9 and 10 for locking the shackle securely within the casing 1 and when it is desired to unlock the lock, the disk 19 is manually rotated a'sulicient distance to cause the pin 18 to engage the pin 17, and rotate the disk tumbler 9 by the rotation of the disk 10 until the pin 16 engages the pin 15 and rotates the disk tumbler 8 until the substantially semi- Vcircular recesses 23 formed therein are in registration with the shank of the shackle. The disk 19 is then rotated in a reverse direction suiiiciently to rotate the disk tum bler 9 until the peripheral substantially semi-.circular recesses 23 therein aline with the shackle shanks 3 and 4. Then, the disk 19 is again rotated in areverse direction to position the peripheral semi-circular recesses in the lovvermost vdisk tumbler 10 in alinement with the shanks of the shackle which Will permit the withdrawal .of the shackle from the Vcasing 1. It will be understood that the extent of rotation of the disk 19 is in each instance toV be controlled or regulated by the co-action of the graduations 2O and 21 and the arrow 22 so as to permit the operator to properly position the various disk tumblers to allow the with draWal 0r insertion of the shackle shanks 3 and 4 into the casing 1.
Springs 24 are carried by the disk tumblers and engage the 'bolt 11 to prevent too free rotation of the disk tuinblers and the spaces or recessesformed in the shank' 1l of the shackle 5 which receives therein the upper disk tumblers 8 and' 9 are slightly wider than the thickness ot the tumbleis'so as to prevent operation of the lock by the feel of the movement of the parts thereof.
Changes, in details may be made without departing from the spirit of this invention, but;
