Be it known that I. Roemrr KENNON DENT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident lof Akron, in the county of I-Iale and Sta-te of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ice- Cream Containers, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to ice-cream containers and the purpose of my invention is the provision of a container so inexpensively constructed as to permit of its being discarded after use thus avoiding the necessity of returning the container as is now necessary with metallic containers, and the expense attending such ret-urn as well as the reduction in cost of shipment by virtue of the difference in weight.

I will describe one form of container embodying my invention and will then point out the novel features thereof in claims.

Referring specifically to the drawings, in which similar reference characters refer to similar parts, my invention in its present embodiment comprises an outer casing including a cylindrical body portion preferably formed of a single sheet of wood veneer bent in the form of a cylinder and having its ends arranged in overlapped relation and secured to each other by means of wire fastening members 16. The outer casing` also includes a head or bottom 17 formed of'wood and secured within the lower end of the bottom portion 15 by means of nails or other suitable fastening members which are driven through a lower hoop 1S surrounding the lower end of the body portion as clearly shown in Figures 1 and 2. The body portion is also provided with an intermediate hoop 19 and an upper hoop 20 both of which are secured so as to snugly embrace the body portion by fastening members 21, these hoops together with the lower hoop and the head 17 serving to maintain the sheet of wood veneer in cylindrical formation. To facilitate moving of the entire container, the intermediate hoop 19 has handles H secured thereto formed of some flexible material such as canvas or the like.

Within the outer casing and disposed in contiguous relation. with respect thereto is an inner casing designated at K formed of paper or some other suitable cheap material which is water-proofed by waxing. rlhis casing K includes a cylindrical body portion 22 and a bottom portion 23, the upper end of the casing being open to allow of the introduction therein of the ice and ice-cream receptacle.

The ice-cream receptacle is designated at R and is preferably formed of heavy manilla paper or card-board and in the same manner as the ordinary ice-cream carton. In its applied position within the container as shown in Figure 2, it is completely housed, and in practice cracked ice and salt is adapted to be packed within the container so as to completely surround the receptacle. To allow of the escape of water from the container, the inner and outer casings are formed at corresponding points with suitable openings for the reception of a plug P.

To confine the cracked ice within the container and to prevent the accidental displacement of the receptacle from the container, a cover C is provided which is pref erably formed of waxed paper sufficiently flexible to allow of its being gathered. The sheet of paper comprising the cover C is in the form of a cylinder with its lower edge 24 inserted between the upper hoop 2O and the upper edge of the outer casing, the cover edge being secured between the two by applying adhesive thereto or in any other suitable manner. The cover is of suiiicient rigidity to normally maintain a cylindrical form so as to allow the ready insertion of the receptacle R and the cracked ice and salt into the container. After the receptacle has been inserted and properly packed', the container is adapted to be closed by gathering` the upper end of the cover C and tying with a string or cord designated at 25.

From the foregoing description it will be manifest that the container is constructed with the prime purpose in view of cheapness so that after the packed container has reached its destination and its purpose served it can be thrown away with negligible loss. This small loss is offset by the comparatively large expense incident to the returning of the usual metallic containers lll@ and the difference in cost of shipment to its destination as a result of its diierence in Weight.

Although I have herein shown and described only oneform of container embody-- ing my invention, it is to be understood that various changes and modifications may be made herein Without departing from the spirit of the invention or the spirit and scope of the appended. claims.

What I claim is:
