Description

warren arenas WILLIAM BELLEVILLE, F LEICESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
'ironoonnosrvn s'rnnn ALLOY.
Li lfill No Drawing.
T b all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM BELLEVILLE,
a citizen'of the United Statga, residing at.
Leicester, in the county of orcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Noncorrosive Steel Alloy, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a steel alloy, it
being the object of my invention to provide a metal which is substantiallyknon-corrosive and which also possesses strength, ductility and elasticity in high degree. With this object in view my invention consists in the provision of a .steel alloy having a relatively high percentage of. nickel and a low percentage of carbon, together with. small amounts of certain other ingredients.
While it will be understood that my invention is not limited to the exact proportions specified, the formula for my improved alloy at present preferred by me comprises approximately l of nickel, .1% of carbon, 27% silicon, .51% manganese, .04% chromium, .018% sulphur, .007 phosphorus, and the remainder iron to make up 100%. 1
The proportion of nickel may be somewhat reduced below or may be increased .to approximately The proportion of carbon may also be slightly increased but should not exceed 1%. Similar slight variations or omissions in the minor elements of my alloy may be permitted within the scope of my invention.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. r, 1922.
Application filed June 16, 1921. Serial No. 478,145.
I have found byactual test that a steel alloy made approximately according to the specified formula is practically non-corrosive when exposed to water, gases or weak acids. It also possesses ahigh elastic limit and great breaking strength and is ductile to an unusual degree. In certain specimens the elastic limit has been found over 60 tons per square inch and the breaking strength as high as 67 tons.
Having thus described my improved allo and the advantages thereof, it. will be evi ent that changes and modifications may be made in the composition of the alloy within the spirit and scope of my invention as set forth in the claims and I do not wish to be otherwise limited to the exact proportions herein disclosed but what I claim is r 1. A non-corrosive steel alloy comprising approximately 15%% nickel, less than 1% carbon, approximately .3% silicon and .5% manganese, less than .1% each of chromium, sulphur and phosphorus, and the principal portion of the remainder iron.
2. A non-corrosive steel alloy comprising approximately 151}% nickel, .1% carbon,
27% silicon, .51% manganese,-.04% chromium, .018% sulphur, .007 phosphorus, and
the principal portion'of the remainder iron.
In testimony, whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature.
WILLIAM BELLEVILLE.
