Be it known 'that I, ABRAHAM FoGnL, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Montreal, Province of- Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat Boxes; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to hat boxes and more particularly to the manner of making and constructing paper boxes.
An object of the present invention is to provide a paper box which will be strong,
durable and efficient in use and one which making, whereby the cost of manufacture of such boxes will be greatly reduced, thereby rendering the same commercially desirable.
lVith the above and other objects in view which will hereinafter appear as the de-v scription continues, the invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and formation of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings:

The invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification. with the further understanding that while the drawings show a partial form of the invention. the latter is not confined to any strict conformity with the showing of the drawings. but may be changed and modified so long as such changes and modifications mark no material departure from the salient features of the invention.

Herebefore it has been customary when making paper boxes to form the tops and bottoms thereof of a disk or any other suitable configuration having a depending flange which is separated from the disk and secured thereto by suitable fastening means. It has also been known within the art to form these tops in one piece, but in making the depending flanges they are slitted at various places, such as, the corners of the box and these slitted portions are connected by suitable fastening means. In making such boxes herebefore, it has been necessary to employ skilled labor which not only in creases the cost of production of such boxes but takes considerable time.
It is the purpose of the present invention to produce a box which can be easily and cheaply made without the knowledge of skillfulness within the art and which may be easily and readily assembled by unskilled persons.
The box as herein shown comprises a body portion 1 which is preferably of a circular configuration and is made from a single rectangular sheet of cardboard, paper or similar material, rolled upon itself andhaving its opposite ends overlapping and secured by means of suitable fastening members indicated by the numeral 2. The bottom 3 and the top 4 are also formed from a single sheet of cardboard. In forming these hottoms or tops of the boxes the blanks 5 are produced as better shown in Figure 1. which comprise a circular disk of suitable material. These disks are placed within a suitable die stamping machine whereby the tops and bottoms will be formed, each of which comprises a disk body portion having the same diameter as the outer diameter of the box and is creased or bent along the dotted line 7 to form the depending flange 8, thereby producing a top or bottom of one contiguous piece without the aid of any fastening members for holding the flange to the body portion or in any manner cutting or splitting the flange so that it will assume its desired configuration. The bottom 3 issecured to the body portion 1 by means of suitable fastening members 9 which extend through the flange 8 and the lower edge of the body portion 1. The top which is not permanently connected to the body portion has the lower edgeof its flange 8 covered by means of a protective strip of relatively thin paper glued or otherwise secured thereto which is indicated by the numeral 10 so as to protect the lower edge of the flange. This strip has its lower end folded around the lower edge of the flange 8 and it extends upwardly at the inner face thereof a substantial distance suificient to provide a gripping portion which projects slightly from the inner face of the flan e 8 and which terminates short of the upper edge of the body of the box when the cover is in position. This construction provides a relatively large space between the interned portion of the reinforcing strip and the top of the cover so that the portion of the flange '8 above the interned edge of the strip is spaced from thebody of the box when the cover is in engagement with the same. 'By this means the engaging or gripping portion of the cover is spaced from the upper edge of the fore, the tops and bottoms should also be elliptical. In Figure 3 of the drawings, I have shown a blank having such an e1liptical configuration but which is formed in the same manner as the tops for a box having a circular configuration, but of course a different shaped die is necessary when placing the blanks into shape.
From the foregoing it is obvious that I have produced a box which can be out,
formed and assembled by a machine, thereby greatly reducing its cost of manufacture and as the body portion, top and bottom of the same are each formed of a single sheet of material this will greatly increase the strength of the box and render the same more durable.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim. as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
As a new article of manufacture a paper box comprising a body portion consisting of a sheet of material having its opposite ends connected together, a top and bottom, each consisting of a single disk of material placed to form a disk body portion and a depending marginal flange integral therewith and of a single thickness, the flange of the bottom of the box being rigidly connected to the body portion thereof, and a reinforcing strip secured to and covering substantially the entire outer surface of the single flange of the top of the box and inturned and folded around the lower edge of the said flange of the top and extended upwardly on the inner face of such flange at the lower portion of the same, the int'urned or folded portion. lot the reinforcing} strip providing an engaging or gripping portion and bein spaced from the upper edge of the body of the box when the top is placed on the same to permit the body of the box to expand above the gripping or engaging portlon of the reinforcing strip to retain the top of the box on the body portion.
