Description
I J. MALLIGAN.
SPARK PLUG.
APPLICATION F!LED MAY 5, 192i.
Patented June 20, 1922.
s a //A L .nllnnpnnnnnnnrgnng mm WITNESSES I lNME/VTOR.
aa/zMa QM A TTORNEYS Wit-no sm ras JOSEPH MALLIGAN, OF POINT MARION, PENNSYLVANTIIL SPARK PLUG.
, Application filed May 5, 1921. Serial No. 466,879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosEPH MALLIGAN, citizen ofthe United States, and a resident of Point Marion, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spark Plugs, of which the following isa specification. V
This invention relates to an improvement in spark plugs and more particularly to an improvement in the construction thereof and means whereby the spray or mixture of the gas or gaseous fuel, as well as excess oil when compressed in the cylinder against the spark will be effectively broken. up, so as to insure a better ignition and more positive action, as well as resulting in a spark plug, the electrodes of which shall be thoroughly cleaned and maintained in an eflicient condition for a longer period than.
spark plugs as at present constructed.
A furtherobj-ect of the invention is to generally improve and enhance the utility of devices of the character to which the invention appertains.
Other and further objects of my invention will become readily apparent to persons skilled in the art from a consideration of the following description when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved spark plug.
Figure 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view thereof.
Figure 3 is an end view looking toward the inner end, and
' Figure 4 is a transverse sectional View.
Referring to the drawings in detail, my improved spark plug is shown as comprising the'usual or any preferred form of wrench engaging body adapted to receive the usual form of insulator 11, which is retained in position by the bushing 12, having internally threaded connection with the body 10, as indicated at 13. The body is externally threaded as shown at 14 for connection with the cylinder head or other place of application on the motor. This body or shell 10 beyond the externally threaded portion instead of being made open is provided with a closed cylindrical portion 15having diametrically opposite openings 16 and the end thereof is made with a V-shaped notch or oppositely sloping walls 17 through which are provided inclined openings 18 which Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 20,
align with and extend through the per pheral wall of the shell or cylindrical port1on 15 thereof diagonally, to produce the openings 19 which are located substantially at right angles to the o enings 16, the openings 19 being arrange diametrically opposite and in diametrical alignment with the openings 18.
The electrode extends through the insulator 11 and is indicated at 20 being suitably anchored or retained in position as indicated at 21 and extending in proximity to the hollow cylindrical portion 15 of the shell or body of the plug so as to produce one electrode while the tapered inner end of the shell produces the other. 'A binding nut 22 is mounted on the threaded outer end of the electrode 20 for the attachment of the conductor wire in the usual manner.
In accordance with the invention as de scribed, and the device in use in a motor, the. gaseous mixture is thrown against the shell and will be broken up, passing through the apertures therein, this serving to effectually break up or spray the mixture, especially in the caseof raw liquids or excess Oll compressed in the cylinder and which owing to the presence of moisture often results in the extinguishing of the spark or interference thereof with the proper ignition of the gas. In this way the ignition of the gas s insured owin to the contact made by the electrode with the bottom of the shell and thereby proper and efiicient combustion is thereby produced. In practice, the openings 16 are preferably made larger than the openings 18 and 19, the
latter being preferably bored through from the bottom of the shell and drilled diagonally through the side so that the gases impinging against the wall thereof will be deflected toward the spark point to insure proper ignition.
In view of the foregoing it is thought that the operation of the device will be readily understood and in view of the'simplicity and practical value that it Will readily commendw itself to those skilled in the art.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:- v
1. A spark plug having a shell provided with a cylindrical closed-end portion having diametrical openings therethrough, a terminal electrode extending through the shell, the end of the shell being provided with a notch, and diagonal openings extending through the Walls of the notch and sides of the shell.
2. A spark plug comprising a body having an attaching portion and a closed shell portion having an end Wall, said shell portion having diametrical openings and openings arranged at right angles thereto and extending at an angle from the outside and through the ends of the shell, a bushing held in the Y body and an electrode mounted in the bush ing and extending to the end portion of the shell.
3 A spark plug comprising a body having an attaching portion and a closed shell portion having an end Wall, said shell portion having diametrical openings and openings arranged at right angles thereto and extending at an angle from the outside and through the ends of the shell, a bushing held in the body and an electrode mounted in the bushing and extending to the end portion of the shell, said shell having oppositely inclined end walls forming a pointed inner portion producing a spark point in cooperation with the electrode.
