MARC-Us A. HIIzscIII., br CHICAGO, ILLINoIs.
. DISPLAY Box.
To all 'whom lt-may concern:
- Be it known that I, MARoUs A. HIRsoHL, a cltlzen of .the United-States, residing at 140 South Dearborn Street, Chicago, in`the county vof 'Cook and State of Illinois, have' invented a new and useful Improvement in Display Boxes, of which the following is a specification. j j
This invention relates to improvements in display' boxes, and more particularly to a. display box adapted to contain merchandise.
for packingand shipping-and valso for displaying the same.
In that form of device embodying the fea'- tures of my invention shown in the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective showing the box closed, Fig. 2 s a view in perspective showing the Vbox open to display the articles therein, with the lid `under the box forming a support or easel for the same to hold it in an inclined position, Fig. 3 is a plan view of apattern of paper from which the box is" formed, Fig. 4 is a lan view of the box formed, and with the id open but not folded under the box to.
form a support, Fig. 5 is a view taken as indicated by the line 5 of Fig. 1, Fig. 6 is a view taken asv indicated by line 6 of Fig. 4, and Fig. 7 is a view taken as indicated by the line 7 of Fig. 2.
As shown in the drawings, the box is formed from a flatsheet of paper cutin the shape shown in Fig, 3, in whichthe dotted lines indicate the location of folds or creases. l
The pattern from which the box is formed comprises arectangular part 10 forming the bottom of the box having attached to its two long sides the rectangular parts 11 and 12 forming the'sides of the box, and attached to its ends the rectangular parts 13 and 14v forming theends o'f the box. In forming the box the sides 11 and 12` are folded up at right angles to the part 10 on the lines 17 .and 18 respectively and the end parts 13 and-14 are likewise folded'up at right angles on the lines 19 and,\20 respectively to form the ends of the box. V'The side parts -11 and 12 are provided with the two flaps 15 and 16 adapted t'o be folded at right angles to the.

and 26 respectively adapted to be' folded' in a similar manner on the linesl 27 and 28 respectively and fastened to theend part 14.
The lid-for the box comprises a rectangular part 5() having attached to its two long sides the triangular shaped side parts 51 and 52 and having attached toone of its ends fthe rectangular part 53. In Iforming the lid s aped side parts..51 and52 are bent up at right angles to the rectangular 'part' 50 on the lines54 and 55 respectively,
other suitable manner. The cover part 50 is the samesize as the bottom partlO," or just l enough larger to allow for the thickness of the paper `of which.. the box is made, sothat when the cover is in place on thevbox the sides 51 and 52 of the cover will slide'down over the sides ll'and 12 ofthe box and the end 53 ofthe cover will fit down over the end 14 of the box. In Fig. 3 I have shown these two parts of exactly the same size, dis- -regarding in this instance the thickness of the paper. In Figs. 1 and 2 I have also disregarded the 4thickness the paper, representing, in such figures, thel edgeof the paper in each case by a single line.
The end ofthe cover part 50 adjacent theapexes of the triangular parts 51 and 52 is attached to the edge of the end part 13 of the box by the two rectangular parts 70 and 71 as.shown. The two'parts70 and 71 are the same in shape and both together are the same shapeand size as `the rectangular endl part 13.; The parts 70 and 71 are fastened together by the crease line 72', and the partV 7 O is fastened to the lid part 50 by the crease line 73.` "Ihe part 71'is .fastened to the end part 1 3. bythe crease line 74.
After the box "and lid have been formed, i
as explained above by folding up the sides and ends and fastening the laps the rectahgular part-'71 is folded on the line 74 down lflat against the upper half of the out-` l side surface of the end part 13 and fastenedv as by pasting, or in any othersuitable manner. The box ,and 11d are then 1n the position shown in Figs. 4 and 6 in which the lid is shown open but not yet folded around under the box` to form the support. From this position the lid may be closed as shown in Fig. 1 by bending on the lines 72 and 73 to bring the part .70 up flat against the part 7l thus allowing the lid to cover the box with the triangular lid parts 51 and 52 down over the rectangular side parts of the box 11 and-4 12 and the end part 53 ofthe'lid down over the end 14 of the box. lVhen it is desired to use the lid as an easel or supporty for the box it is folded on the lines 72 and 73 to the position-shown in Figs. 2 and 7. This brings the part 70 fiat against the lower half of the outside of the end part 13 and permits the bottom 10 of the box to rest flat upon the rectangular part 50 of theI lid and lie coincident therewith. Vhen in such position the parts 71 and 70 are flat against the outside of the end part 13 of the box and cover the same as shown in Fig. 2.
Although I have said that the aps and part 71 are fastened in position by pasting it is obvious that, without detracting from the spirit of this invention, they may be fastened in posit-ion by any other suitable means as desired. For example, slot-sand tongues of any suitable construction or paper 'fasteners may be used. Although I have shown the box as formed from one flat sheet of' paper it is obvious also that, without detracting from `the spirit of this invention, it may be formed from two ormore pieces or in any other desired manner.
lVhile I have shown and described certain embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that it is capable of many modifications. Changes therefore in the construction and arrangement may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as disclosed in the appended claims, in which it is my intention to claim all novelty inherent in my invention as broadly as possible in view of the prior art.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. The combination with a box having a bottom and sides lid including a main stiff flat part of the same size and shape as the top of the box having triangular shaped side parts' substantially perpendicular thereto, the lid hinged at the end adjacent the apexes of the triangular parts to one perpendicular side of the box in such a manner as to permit it to be folded under the box to form a support for the same.
2. The combination with a box having a bottom and sides perpendicular thereto. of a lid .including a main-flat part of substantially the same' size and shape as the top of the box having two triangular shaped side parts substantially perpendicular thereto,
the lid hingedly connected at its end adjacent the apexes of the triangular Iparts to one of the perpendicular sides of the box on a horizontal line dividing said side into two perpendicular thereto, of al halves by a rectangular part substantially l as to permit said lid to be folded to cover the box with such edge lying adjacent the upper edge of said perpendicular side of the box or folded underneath the box with such edge lying adjacent the lower edge of said perpendicular side.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 7th day of March,
1921. MARCUS A. HIRsoHL. [1.. s.)
