CANDY BOX.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented May 16, 1922.
Application led April 14, 1920. Serial No. 373,918.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER HALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pasadena, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Candy Box, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to boxes, being more particularly the construction of a box of thin wood adaptable to be used as a con* tainer for candy and similar substances.
The principal object of my invention is to produce a box of the class described, of neat appearance and of simple forni and construction, the lid of the box being so mounted thereon that it may be swung from either the front or the back of the box.
Other objects and advantages will appear hereinafter from the following specification.
Fig'. 1 is a perspective view of a box embodying ay form of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of the box shown in Fig. 1, and
F ig. 8 is an enlarged cross-sectional View of a portion of the box.
The box is 'preferably formed of thin wood and consists of a bottoni 11, end Walls 12l and sides 13 and 14;, the sides and endsl being tongned and grooved at the corners as clearly shown in Fig. 1, and the bottom 11 being glued to the sides and ends.
1G and 17 designate battons or strips of wood glued to the sides of the box, there being two battons on each side, each of which terminate at their upper edges in tongues 18 which project above the sides of the box. Glued to the upper face of the lid or top 20 of the box is a pair of battons or strips 21, the ends of each of said battons being grooved as indicated at 22 to receive the tongues 18 on the battons 16 and 17.
28 designate headed pins or pintles which extend through the tongues 241- on the battons 21 and the tongues 18 on the battons 1G. thereby forming a hinge between the top ofthe box and the side indicated at 13, the heads on the pins aifording means by which the pins may readily be removed for the purposes hereinafter described. The other ends of the battons 21 are formed with tongues 25 and grooves 26 which grooves r ceive the tongues 27 formed on the upper end of the battons 17, the tongues and grooves of the just described battons 2l and battons .17 being connected to form hinges by means of pintles 28.
From the above description it will be understood that the box may be said to be uniform insofar as the construction andconnections between the sides are concerned, the appearance of the box being likewise uniform 1n appearance from either side.-
1t will be understood, however, that the pintles 28 may be removed and the pintles 28 used for a hinge for the box, the pintles 28 serving as a' locking means for the box in which case the lid opens as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2, or if desired, the pintles 28 may be removed and the pintles 23 used as a hinge for the lid of the box, the pintles 28 serving as a locking means for the box, in which case the lid opens as indicated in dot and dash lines in Fig. 2. lVhen the box is in closed position and the top and sides connected as above described a compact package is provided rdue to the construction ofthe hinges kon both sides of the box as heretofore referred to.
lVhat 1 claim is 1. In combination, a box having a top, bottom, sides and ends, battons on each side and top, and pintles connecting the battons on each to the battons on the top of the box, thereby forming hinged connections for the top, both at the front and back of the box.
2. 1n combination, a box having a top, bottoni, sides, and ends, battons secured on each side and top, tongue and groove connections between the battons on each side and the battons on thetop of the box, and removable pintles connecting the battons on the sides and the battons on the top of the box, thereby forming hinged connections for the top at both the front and back of the box.
1n testimony whereof, l have hereunto set my hand at Los Angeles, California, this 6th dayof April, 1920.
PETER HALL.
