Be it known that we, EDGAR lV. BOWEN and ROBERT TURNER, citizensV of the United States, and residing at Detroit and Highland Park, respectively, county of Wayne, and State of Michigam-have invented a new and Tmproved. Display Apparatus, of which the following` is a specification. 1
This invention relates to means for displaying Y for salen a maximum number of small articles, fpackages of seeds preferred, and consists of acase having a front' door hinged at its upper edge to the top of the case and adapted to'b'e swung up and back until it lies on said top, shelves being provided within the case which are disclosed when the front door is swung back.
It also consists in knock-down display boxes which are placedV upon the Shelves when the filled case is to be shipped, and in folding supports pivoted to the inner side of the front door and adapted to be swung upto vertical position to support the display boxes when the front door is swung up and back and rests on the top.
Tt further consists in the details of construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings and particularly pointed out inY` the claims. Y
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective viewrof our improved display apparatus. Fig.'2 is a central vertical transverse section of the apparatus when collapsed. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of one of the folding supports and the end of a `display box thereon. Fig. 4'is a longitudinal vertical section of the top ofthe box when the front door has been folded back.
Similar' reference characters refer to like parts throughout the several views.
The drawingl shows a case consisting of the top 1, back 2, sides 3, bottom 4 and front 5. A front door 6 is hinged at its upper edge to the front edge of the cover, the hinges permitting` the door 6 to be swung up and back until it lies flat on the top as indicated in Fig.- 1. These hinges are formed of narrow leaves 7 and 8 united by links 9 which vpermit the door to freely assume the kpositions shown in Figs. 1 and 2.- The case is provided with shelves 10 on which the display when the space below the lower shelf has Vbeen filled. Theserdisplay boxes are fully described in the Turner Specification of` Letters Patent.

' Patents No.- 836,406 dated November 20,
and No. 839,438; dated December 25,
YA pair of supports is mounted on lthe innerface of the door 6 so that they may be swung to vertical position, as shown in Fig. 1, after the door has been swung up to lie on the top 1.. A base for each support is sedoor 6 andvpreferably consists ofa flatbar 12having 11p-turned ears 13 at its vends perforated Vto receive the pins 14 which` extend through the small lugs 15 at the ends of thel angle bar 16. Secured-at their lower ends to one of these angle bars 16 are two legs 17 and 18 connected near their upper ends by means of the angle stamping 19 which Vhas an upwardly extend* ing pin 2() adapted to enter a hole 21 -in the bottom of one of the boxes 11 to position both the box and the support. The other box 11 rests on the angle bars 16 between the supports.
The other. support has legs 22 and 23, also secured to a lower angle bar 16V and an upper cross bar 192L is provided with a pin 20 to ,enter a second hole in the bottom of the displaybox 11. It will be noticed that the two legs 22 and 23 are a short distance forward of the legs 17 and 18 respectively, so that the supports can be folded down together. The leg 22 has its middle portion 24 bent down out of alinement,'as shown in Fig. 4, to permit the portion 25 of the crossV bar 19.(Fig. 1) to extend across when the supports are folded down as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. This cross bar is preferably formed with a notch 26 to receive the straight upper portion of the leg 22.
In practice, vat the factory, the space below the lower shelf l10 is filled with packages, dicated in the above named Turner patents, and their Vseveral trays properly filled; these boxes are placed on the shelves 10 which they fit, Vand the door 6 is swung down as indicated in Fig. 2 and secured with screws. VThe case and contents are ready for shipment. When the display cabinet is to be used, the boxes 11 are removed and opened out, as shown by the top box in Fig. 1, the lower box being similarly opened, and these Vboxes are then Vmounted on the supports. The packages which were packed in the Yspace'below the shelves may now be arranged on these shelves so that the display boxes are collapsed as in-V advantage may be.` taken of this additional display room. As the door lies flat against the top of the case, a kfirm foundation for the box supports is assured. f
The details and proportions of the various parts of this display apparatus may all be changed by those skilled in the art, without departing from the spirit of our invention as set forth in the following claims.
lVe claim:-
l. ln a display apparatus, a case having a front door hinged at its upper edge to the front edge of the top and adapted to be swung up and back to lie flat upon the top,
' supports pivoted to the inner side of the door and adapted to be folded up to extend vertically When the door lies on the top, and display boxes mounted onV the supports.
2. In a display apparatus, a case having a front door hinged at its upper edge to the front edge of the top and adapted to be swung up and back and lie flat on the top,
a pair of bars secured to the inner side of the cover and having upturned ears, supporting frames, and pivots mounted in said ears Whereon the supporting frames are mounted.
3. In a display apparatus, a case having a door adapt-ed to lie flat on the top of the case, a pair of supports pivoted to the inner side of the door and adapted to lie against the door or be swung up to extend vertically therefrom, said supports being formed With shelves provided with upwardly extending projections, and display boxes adapted to be mounted on said shelves when the supports are swung up to vertical position, said boxes having recesses to receive the projections on the shelves and the ends of the boxes engaging the uprights above said shelves.
