MATCH PACKET 'FOR ADVERTISING PURPOSES.
Specification 01' Letters Patent. .Patented May 2, 1922.
application filed January 6, 1921. Serial No. 485,448.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ANDREW W. GRAHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bufialo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match Packets for Advertising Purposes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to match packets for advertising purposes and has special reference to improvements on the devices shown in my prior Patent Number 1,351,242 of August 31, 1920, and in my co-pending applications numbered respectively 429,238 and 429,239 and both filed December 8, 1920. 1
One important object of the invention is to provide improved means suitable for holding advertising matter carried by a match packet in such a way as to secure or hold the match packet to a packet such as a packet of cigarettes or the like. A second important object of the invention is to provide improved means of the above character so arranged as to expose a portion of the cigarette packet for advertis- 1 e at the same time having ample additional surface for displaying for advertising.
A third important object of the invention is to rovide a match packet with an imcollapsible Wrapper so constructed and arranged that the wrapper may either be used to surround a package of cigarettes or the like or may be detached to permit direct attachment of the match packet as by adhesive means.
A still further important object of the invention is to provide a novel arrangement of spring hinge for match packets of this character.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in general of certain several views, and
Figure .1 is a perspective view of a match vpacket showing one form of the attaching means.
Figure 2 is a side view of the packet illustrated in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an end view thereof.
. gumming to a package.
Figure 4 is a .view showing a modified form of the wrapper means, this form bein arranged to accommodate packages of dif ferent sizes or to be attached directly by p acket is indicated in general at 1s a packa e of cigarettes, it being understood that this showing is typical of any small package such as tobacco,-
cigarettes, smallcigars or anything of like nature to which it may be found desirable to attach a match packet as advertising means. i y
In the form shown in Figures, 1, 2 and 3 there is secured to the packet M a collapsible envelope having folding sides 10 and a back 11 provided with a window opening 12 so that when a package P is introduced as disclosed in Figure l a portion of such package will be exposedthrou h the window 12 thus advertising the k1nd of cigarettes or the like which are held in the envelope while at the same time the sides and remainder of the 'portion' 11 of such envelope aiford space for the display of other advertlslng matter. p
In the form shown in Figure 4 the envelope is in the shape of a wrapper strip having an approximately central portion 13 glued to or formed integrally with the bottom of the packet M. On each side of this portion M are provided folded side portions 14 normally collapsed in bellows like manner and at the free edges of the portions 14 are back portions 15 and '16 one being arranged to overlap the other. The overlapping portion is rovided along its free ed e wit agummed eld 17. Also gummed fields 18 are provided on the rear face of the porbers 14 may be torn ed at their junction with 5. Furthermorefit desired, the ackage maybe secured by the gummed fiel s 18 and the wrapper also placed around such package. It is to be noted that with this form the device peculiarly adapts itself both to varying sizes of cigarette packages and also to different styles of packages. For instance the packet M may be made'small enough to just fit a small package of cigarettes and yet by tearing off the side port-ions the packet may be gummed on a lar e package of clgarettes or cigars even thoug -t 'e latter be too large to be embraced by the wrapper. I
"lit is of course obvious that the exposed faces of the dit ferent forms of wrapper and match packet are well adapted for the display of advertising matter.
Tn using thisxform of the device it is desirable to have a simple means for holding the match packet normally closed' and to this end T prefer to make this packet with a back member 18 substantially flat and a front member or top 19 in the form of a shallow compressing and hardening, as by hot stamp-.
tray, the two being made from a single blank or cardboard or the like and having hinged connection as at 20. Centrally of the back portion 18 I provide, extending inward from the hinged edge, slits 21 and by properly ing, the part of the backl8 between the slits 21 T form an outwardly projecting resilient lip 22. Moreover the top'19 is pressed as at 23 to provide a lip co-acting with the lower li 22. From an'inspection of lBligure 8 it will be obvious that when the top is moved around the hinge 20 the lip 23 will spring the lip 22 downward and owing to the resiliency of this lip 22 release of the top 19 will allow the lip 22 to force the part 23 upward around the hinged line and thus close the packet.
There has thus eilicient device of the kind described and for the purpose-specified.
been provided a simple and.
rciaeae Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. The combination with a match packet for advertising purposes; of a collapsible wrapper member secured to the back of said packet and adapted to enclose a package such as cigarettes or the like. 7
2. The combination with a match packet for advertising purposes; of a collapsible wrapper member secured to the back of said packet and adapted to enclose a package such as cigarettes or the like, said wrapper member being provided with a window therein wherethrough a portion of the enclosed package may be displayed. 4
3. The combination with a match packet for advertising purposes; of a wrapper member having a substantially central portion connected to the back of the match packet and provided on its rear side with gummed fields adjacent its edges.
4:. The combination with a match packet for advertising purposes; oi a wrapper member having a substantially central portion connected to the back of the match packet, said central portion being provided on its rear side with gummed fields adjacent its edges, said wrapper member further having collapsible side portions carried by the lat eral edges of the central portion and having overlapping rear portions arranged for adhesive connection, said side portions and central portion being formed of paper like material whereby the side portion can be torn away from the central portion.
5. A match packet consisting of a bottom and top formed of a single blank of cardboard like material, said bottom and top being connected along a hinged line, said bottom having slits extending inward from the hinged portion and being disconnected. from the top between said slits, the disconnected portion being expanded laterally and compressed to form a resilient lower lip, and an outwardly extending upper lip formed on said top and engaging said lower lip.
Tn testimony whereof ll allix my signature.
