Description

H. M. SMITH.
BUFFING WHEEL.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 23. 1920.
Patented Apr. 25, 1922.
INVENTOR h. M. jM/r/l HERBERT M. SMITH, OF FARMINGTON, CONN EGTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO LAN DERS, FRARY & CLARK, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT.
BUFFING- WHEEL.
Application filed April 23, 1920. Serial No. 375,931.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HERBERT M. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at F armington, county of Hartford, State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Buffing 'Wheels, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
y invention relates to buffing wheels and has for its object to provide a paper buffing wheel in which the buffing surface is soft and fibrous. It further has for its object to produce an inexpensive wheel which will take the place of the cloth wheels now in use and largely, if not entirely, eliminate the use of cloth in bufling wheels for certain purposes.
The following is a description of a wheel embodying my invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which,
Fig. 1 shows a section of a wheel embodying my invention, through its center;
Fig. 2 1s a side elevation of the same, parts being broken away; and,
Fig. 3 is an enlarged section through the center. 1
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 are four sections of the wheel, each of which comprises disks of embossed, crinkled. stippled, or otherwise corrugated paper of soft-texture and having elasticity and flexibility in several directions, The crinkled wood pulp paper known as kraft paper, such as is used for crinkled paper towels or crinkledv wrapping paper, iswell adapted for my purpose. This paper is about l/lOOth of an inch thick. It easily absorbs moisture. It is soft and pliable and wheels made up 'of it when used as buffing wheels present a soft matted edge, admirably adapted to receive and retain the materials used in bufling and other polish-v ing operations. The disks of each section are stitched together with stitches 2. One suitable form of crinkled paper is indicated in. the drawings.
Patented Apr. 25 1922.
to produce uni- The wheel may be made of any desired thickness and is preferably made up of a plurality of sections clamped on an ordinary bushing 6 by a nut 7, the nut and bushing being provided with spanner holes 8. A wheel made up of paper such as described attains the objects of my invention and may be used in place of a cloth wheel with very satisfactory results formany purposes.
As will be evident to those skilled in the art, my invention permits of Various modifications without departing from the spirit thereof or the scope ofthe appended claims.
What I claim is: s
1. A bufling wheel comprising contacting disks of soft corrugated paper forming a thick mass.
2. A bufling wheel comprising contacting disks of soft corrugated paper having longi tudinally extending crinkles, some of the layers of paper being placed so that adjacent layers have the crinkles angularly displaced.
3. A buffing wheel comprising contacting disks of soft corrugated paper forming a thick mass, said wheel having its outer faces composed of cloth.
4. A bufling wheel comprising contacting disks of soft corrugated paper forming a thick mass, said wheel having its outer faces composed of cloth and having layers of cloth interposed between some of the sheets forming the thick mass.
