Be it known that I, EDGAR S. ATEN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Lexington, in the county of Richland and State of Ohio, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Rollers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to rollers for lawns and for similar purposes, and one of the objects thereof is to provide a roller of this character which may be manufactured with greater ease and rapidity than is possible with rollers now known; and hence one which may be produced at a smaller cost than the present rollers.
Another object of the invention is to provide a roller of this chartcer which, though simple and cheap in construction, yet is durable, and is also neat in appearance.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in th accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the complete roller in use; and,
Figure 2 is a front view of the roller, one section thereof being removed, and parts of the apparatus being broken away.
Referring to the drawings more in detail, the roller consists of two semi-cylindrical sections, indicated by the numerals 1, 1. Each of these sections is identical in construction, and consists of the semi-cylindrical rolling wall, end walls 2, 2, set inwardly from the ends of the roller walls, and a half stub shaft 3, 3, cast integral with each of the end walls. In addition to this structure there is also two inwardly extending lugs 4, 4, at each end of each of the semi-cylindrical sections, for a purpose to be described hereinafter. The sections are preferably hollow, as clearly indicated in the drawings.
In the manufactur of the rollers, the semi-cylindrical sections are cast separately, and the rolling walls, the end walls, the half stub shafts, and the inwardly projecting lugs, are all cast integral. In assembling the rollers the two semi-cylindrical sections are placed together, and the inwardly extending lugs 4, 4, mate, as shown in the drawings, whereby the bolts 5 may be secured in the holes provided for that purpose Specification of Letters Patent.

When the sections are secured together as above described, the half stub shafts are brought into juxtaposition, as clearly shown in the drawings, and thereby form a shaft.
The operating bar 6 is provided with the conventional handle 7, and on the opposite end of the operating bar are mounted the brackets 8, 8. These brackets extend outwardly beyond the ends of the roller, and are then bent at right angles to extend down to the stub shafts. Adjacent the ends of the brackets suitable apertures are provided, and the brackets are operatively connected to the roller by passing the stub shafts through the apertures.
It is to beparticularly noted that by forming the roller of two semi-cylindrical sections, the cost of manufacture is considerably reduced, because of the fact that the semi-cylindrical sections may be cast with much greater ease and rapidity than is pos sible in the present practice of casting the roller in one cylindrical piece. It will also be obvious that the cost of manufacturing will be further reduced because of the fact that the two semi-cylindrical sections forming the roller are identical in construction.
From the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation, and the advantages of the improvements will be readily understood.
Changes in the form, and the minor details ofconstruction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A. roller of the character described, including two cast metal semi-cylindrical sections, means for securing said sections together, and an. operating handle operatively connected with said roller.
2. A roller of the class described, including two hollow semi-cylindrical sections, end walls carried by said sections, half stub shaftscarried by said end walls, means for securing said sections together, and an opcrating handle operatively connected with said stub shafts.
3. A roller of the character described, including two hollow semicylindrical sections, end walls cast integral with said sections, half stub shafts cast integral with said end walls, inwardly extending lugs cast integral.
