JUIDSON B. BUPE, OF SIURG-IS, MICHIGAN, ASSIGIVORQTO'CENTRAL WHEEL'COMPANY, I "OF STURGIS, MICHIGAN, A CQRPORATION OF MICHIGAN.
, WIRE WHEEL.
To all in 7mm it m concern.
Be it known that I. Jonson R. RUrn', a
citizen ,oft the United States, residing at blturgis, county oi St. Joseph, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WireWheels, of which the following isa specification.
i This invention relates to improvements in wire wheel's. It relates particularly to ll11-- provements in the hub part- I The object of the invention is to provide a very simple and staunch hub in which the parts are ellectively locked against accidental displacement. f'
' Objects pertaining to details of the structure will definitely appear from the detailed description tofolloi I accomplish the objects of the invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is fully illustrated, so far as the hub structure is concerned, in the accompanying drawing forming a part oi this specification, in which:
Fig. I is a detail perspective view of the hub part of a wheel, a portion of the barrel being cut away to show details of construc tion.
Fig. II is a transverse detail sectional perspective view through the hub near one end.
Fig. III is a detail elevation view of one end of the hub barrel.
Fig. IV is a detail longitudinal sectional view taken on line corresponding to line l:at of Fig. II, showing details of the locking means.
Fig. V is a detail sectional elevation view similar to that of Fig. IV, showing the structure slightly modified.
In the drawing similar numerals of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional view is taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section line.
Considering the numbered parts of the drawing, 1 is the barrel of the hub which is notched at its end as indicated at 2, forming a series of projecting lugs 3 and a. 5 is one of the looped double wire spokes. These are retained on the end flange of the hub by clip pieces 7 wrapped therearound. The hub barrel 1 is inserted into the flange, each lug 3 extends between a pair of spokes. and

each lug a extends into the loop oit'ia corresponding double spoke. ,Thefiange is folded over the barrel 1 at 8 and eltectively embraces and caps over the same, closing up any gap at that point andpresentinga nicely finished appearance as well. There isthen 'inserted thelocking bearing tube 10 into the hub and a collar 9 is disposed onthis .tubelO and is suitably'tlanged for the wheelattachmg devices where the wheels aremade detachable. The locking. tube 10 is provided with a longitudinal rib 11 whiclrisstruck up therefrom. which engages in a'notch 12 in the flange 6. The locking tube 10 is expanded at 13 and 14 by fspinningand locks the two head flanges otthe'hub securely together. Because of the projecting rib 11 the parts are lockedxagainst turning upon each other and remainpermanently in position. This results in a very staunch wheel in which the spokes at the two ends of the hub are effectively located in alternate position to effectively support the rim.
lVhere the wheel is not made detachable, the collar 9 is simply omitted and the end 13 is spun the same as the end 14. l/Vhere it is desired to make a wheel of extra strength, the projecting rib may be extended the entire length of the locking bearing tube, as appears at 15 in Fig. V, the same engaging a notch 16 at the end,.as there indicated.
From this description and examination of the parts, it will be seen that a wheel is provided with a complete hub barrel which effectively engages and spaces all of the spokes. The end flanges or plates are locked securely in position and because of the projections 8 between the spokes 6 a complete finished hub is produced. The parts are maintained in relative position from turning axially on each other by the rib 11, a matter of very great consequence in securing a staunch wheel. The rib 11 is also of great advantage in retaining the collar efiectively and strongly in position. The inturned groove of this rib is of value in re taining lubricant.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is:
1. In a wheel structure the combination of double spokes. a hub barrel therefor notched to form lugs to project within the loops of the spoke and between the same, flanges tor the said hub having clip portions to engage the spokes and inturned portions between the spokes and to engage the loops thereof, a flanged collar at each end of the hub, one collar and one flange being suitably notched axially, and a bearing and locking tube with longitudinal rib expanded and spun intothesaid wheel to form the central bearing and retain the parts locked in posithereof, one of said flanges being suitably "notched axially, and a bearing locking tube with longitudinal rib expan d and spun into the said wheel to form the central bearing and retain the parts locked in position,
as specified. V
f In a wheel structure the combination of double spokes, a hub barrel therefor notched to form lugs for engaging the said spokes, flanges for the said hub having clip ortions embracing. the j said spokes, afl anged collar "at each end of the hub, one
collar and one flange being suitably notched 30 at the center, and a bearing locking tube with longitudinal rib the ends of which are spun into the saidflanges to form the central bearing and retain the parts locked in position, as specified.
4. In a wheel structure the combination of double spokes, a hub barrel therefor notched to form lugs for engaging the said spokes, flanges for said hub having clip portions embracing I the said spokes, one. of said flanges being suitably notched at the center, and a bearing locking tube with longitudinal rib the ends of which are spun into the said flanges to form a central bearing and retain the parts locked-in position, as s ecified.
5. In a wheel structure the com ination of double spokes, a hub barrel, flanges for the said hub having portions embracing the said spokes, one of said flanges being suitably notched at'the center, and a bearing lockin tube with longitudinal rib the ends of whic are spun into the said flanges to form the central bearing and retain the parts locked in osition, as specified.
n witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two wit- 55 nesses.
