PIPE WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 14, 1922.
Application filed September 22, 1921. Serial No. 502,485.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, GUY C. CLAYPOOLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at I-lamden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pipe Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a-full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in
Fig. 1, a view in elevation of a pipewrench constructed in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2, a view thereof in transverse section on the line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3, a detached plan view of the pivotal guide-frame of the wrench;
Fig. 4, a side view thereof;
Fig. 5, a rear view thereof;
Fig. 6, a view of the guide-frame blank prior to folding the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in pipe-wrenches, the object being to provide a simple, cheap, durable and eflicient tool of the character described.
With these ends in view, my invention consists in a pipe-wrench having certain details of construction and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In carrying out my invention, as herein shown, I provide the sheet-metal guideframe .blank 7 with two complementary, integral finger-like abutment-lugs 8 spaced wide apart and projecting rearwardly from its inner or rear edge, as clearly shown in Figure 6, the outer or forward edge of the blank being formed at its ends with complementary, rounded lugs 9 perforated for the reception of the pivot 10, by means of which the guide-frame produced by folding the said blank 7, is pivotally mounted upon also formed on points opposite its center with oblong slots 12, which, when the blank is folded, face each other andreceive the nut 13, by means of which the movable serrated wrench-jaw 14 is operated to co-act with the fixed serrated wrench-jaw 15, which is mounted in the extreme outer end of the said handle 11. When the blank 7 is folded into U-shaped form, to form the guide-frame, the rearwardly-projecting abutment-lugs 8 aforesaid are turned inwardly toward each other, so as to stand at right angles to the side walls of the guide-frame, as shown in Figure 2. To permit the abutment lugs 8 to be turned inwardly toward each other, as described, the blank 7 must be cut to produce two L-shaped slits, as shown by the broken lines 8 in Figure 6, the respective slits extending inwardly, parallel with the outer edges of the fingers 8, and then inwardly toward each right angles to the said fingers. In this position, they form abutments for the head 16 of a guide-pin 17 encircled by a spring 18 inserted into a transverse bore 19 formed. in the wrench-handle 11 and located between and in line with two integral rounded lugs 20 oil-setting from the inner edge of the said handle and enclosing and forming guides for the rearwardly-extending abutment-lugs 8, the outer edges of which bear upon the inner, faces of the said guide-lugs 20. The said pin and spring, by co-acting with the said lugs, exert a constant effort to hold the guide-frame in its normal position, in which the movable wrench-jaw 14 co-acts with the fixed wrench-jaw 15 in gripping the pipe. WVhen, however, the handle 11 of the wrench is pushed in the opposite direction from the direction required to secure the gripping action of the 'aws, the spring is compressed and the gui e-frame allowed to swing on its pivot 10 for releasing the serrated jaws from their bite upon the pipe.
I claim:
In a pipe-wrench, the combination with the handle and fixed jaw thereof, of a sheetmetal guide-frame pivotally mounted upon the said handle, a movable jaw carried by the said frame, a spring mounted in the said handle, and two finger-like abutment lugs formed integral with the side walls of the said guide-frame, bent inwardly there other at from toward'each other and projecting rear- In testimony whereof, I have signed this wardly from the rear edges of the said side specification in the presence of two subscribwalls of the guide-frame, the inner ends of mg Witnesses.
the said lugs being formed by slitting and GUY C. CLAYPOOLE. 5 bending the edges of the side Walls of'the Witnesses:
guide-frame at points adjacent to the said e ERIK S. PALMER,
