To all 'whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, AARoN BARAsHroK, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Richmond Hill, borough and county of Queens, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedsteads, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to bedsteads and more particularly to that type thereof commonly known as metal bedsteads, and has for its object to provide an improved and novel looking means of simple construction where by the side rails or bars areV detachably connected with head and foot pieccs of the 'bedstead in an efficient and reliable manner. Other niore specifioobjects of my in- -vention will appear from the description herein'after'and the 'features of novelty will be p'ointed out in' theV appended claims.

As shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 the looking i means comprises a supporting member 10 Ypreferablyin the form of an upright angle iron, the one web a of which is attached to the npright'post 11 of the head orfoot piece of the bed and the other web 72 of,
which projects'outwardly from said post 11 at a right angle, as shown in Fig. 8; that is to say, each upright post 11 or equivalent part of the head piece'and foot piece of the bedsitead is 'provided with amember 10 whichris' rigidly fixed in place in such a manner and in such a position that the memf -bers 10 of the head piece and foot piece, respectively, project' toward each other in alignment lwhen the bedstead is set up. The looking means further includes a cooperating member 16 which' may also be in the form of an angle-iron having a horizontal web a and an upright web d extending at Spccification of Letters Patent. The webs o and (Z of the members 16 may be continued to constitute the side rails of* the bedstead or, as shown in the illustrated example, said webs may be connected with the correspondmg webs'of the side rails`19 which, in such case, also comprise single-` irons, as shown in Fig. 1;' any suitablev means may be utilized to ,permanently connect the members 16 and the side rails 19, the drawmgs showing rivets 20 for this purpose.
In order to increase the rigid'ity of the' bedstead as a whole I prefer to provide the head piece and foot piece of the bedstead with a transvers'e angle-iron or member 21 which has its opposite ends secured by means of rivets 22 or the like to lugs 23 preferably struck from and comprising integral parts of the members 10. i As shown i'n Figs. l and-5, additionalV rivets Q'limay be used to' secure the angle-iron 20 to the memher 10. The members 16v are connected with the members 10 by passing the heads 14 through the enlargedv ends of the key-hole slots 17 and the webs d into surface engagement with the webs b, after which the members 16 are moved downwerdly to bring the -studs 13? 1, the members 21 vextend transversely beinto the reduced ends of said slots 17. Because of the tapering form of these reduced portions of said slots 17 the studs 13 may be wedged therein and thus frictionally hold the same against unintentional shifting` in said slots 17. In the final connected condition of the parts the transverse or horizontal webs c ofthe members 16 rest upon the upper vedges of the upright webs 7) of the members 10 and the apertures 18 are in registry with the apertures 157 this condition of the respective parts being` duplicated at opposite sides of the head piec-es and foot pieces of the bedstead.` ln order to positively lock the members 10 and 16 against .unintentional separation and to permit a lifting force to be exerted upon the side rails 19 without disconnectingsaid members, bolts 25 may be inserted lthrough said registering apertures 15 and 18 and secured therein by means ofwing-nuts 26. To disconnect the side rails 'it is simply necessary to remove the bolts 25 and then lift upon the side rails 19 to bring` the studs 13 out of the reduced portions of the key-hole slotsl'? and into the enlarged ends thereof and then passingsaid slots outwardly over the heads 14 to completely free the members l'from the members 10.
It will be understood that although the Vstuds 13 are illustrated Vas part of'the members 10 andtheslots 17 as part of the memfibers' 1.6, the location may be reversod with respect to said members without affecting either the efliciency or the operation of the ssA looking' means.
.In the form illustrated in Figs. L1, 5 and 6 the1members 10a, which correspond'to the members 10. are each provided with a pair of key-hole slots 17a prcferably located one above Vthe other in aliznment upon the uprightweb b, which corresponds to the web o .of the vform first described; in this form also the reduced portions of the key-hole slots 17a are tapered shg'htly toward their closed ends. The members 16% which correspond to the members 16. are each provide'il rth a pair of studs 13a having heads111a and located upon the' uprightV fianges (Z of said members in positions for proper' coop'eration with the slots 17a; The upright fl'anges b' and (Z of theinembcrs10aL and 16a, respectively, are provided with apertures 15*t and 18?L adapted to `register with each other for the accommodation of bolts 25a secured in place by wing-nuts 26a and corresponding in function tothe bolts 25 and 'wing-nuts 26 of the forml first described.

When constructed as described with respect to Figs. 4, 5 and 6 the invention is capable of combining the side rails 19 With the head and foot pieces in two different position's; that is to say, by bringinpY the heads lta through the slots 17a and the studs 13a into the reduced parts thereof, and shown in Figs. 4c, 5 and 6, the horizontal webs c' are brought over and into contact with the upper edges of the upright webs b' of ythe members-102L im the same way as in Figs. 1, 2 and 8, and the horizontal webs of the side rails 19a are accordingly uppermost to pro- `vide supports for the customary spring in.

The invention, 1n all of itsforms, profor firmly and detachably uniting the side rails with the head and foot pieces and which may be easily'pult'together and as readily taken apart when occasion requires.
VVhen operatively connected, the looking,
means is incapable. of being unintentionully .vides a simple and efiicientlocking 4meansv disconneoted either by a lift upon the side rails of the bed or in any other way and thus provides a reliable means whereby the parts are not only looked together but Whereby, in addition, the bedstead is automatically squared up and straightened, this being tlie result of the surface en gagement between the webs b and (Z in the one form and b' and in the other form shown. The looking means as shown and described is also capable of universal use and does not require any specific construction and arrangement to adapt it only for certain kinds and types of beds. lVhen constructed in the form illustrated in Figs. 4: to 7 inclusive, the looking means is reversble to adapt the side rails for supporting a bed-spring directly or for I carrying bed-slats on which the spring is supported, as previously set forth. By constructing the reduced portions of the keyhole slots of tapering form and wedging the studs 13 and 13a therein the bolts 25 and 25a and the co-operating wing-nuts 26 and 20a may, in some cases, be omitted, the frietional engagement of the parts, in such case,
being suflicient to maintain the looking means against unintentional separation under all ordinary conditions. w
By making all of the elements of the locking means easily disconnectible and separable, the bed may readily be maintained in a sanitary condition. The provision of the transverse members 21 inoreases the rigdity of the bedstead againstl twisting or distorting, this being due to the fact that said members are connected directly to one element of the looking means, which ele- Vments themselves are connected directly to the npright posts of the head pieces and foot pieces of the bedsteads.V
Various changes in the specific form shown and described may be made within the scope of the olaims without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim:
1. A looking means for bedsteads coinprising an upright looking member having a Vertical attaching fiange adapted for attachment to an end piece of a bedstead and a Vertical connecting fiange extending transversely to said attaching flange and having its free Vertical edge unobstructed, a lug `projecting perpendioularly from the face of said attaching fiange and providing a connection for oneV end of a transverse strengthening member, a co-operating looking member having a Vertical attaching flange arranged to lie in surface engagement with the attaching flange of said first-named locking` member, one of Said attaching flanges being provided with upright key-hole slots, headed studs upon the other attaching flange adapted to fit into said slots to lock said looking members together and a horizontal fiange extending transversely to said second attaching flange and arranged to project over one of thehorizontal edges of said first attaohing fiange.
2. In a bedstead the combination of an end piece, upright looking members each having a Vertical attaching flange secured to said end piece at opposite points and a Vertical connecting fiange extending from said attaching fiange perpendioular to said end piece and having its free Vertical edgeV unobstructed, a 111g projecting perpendicularly from thefaoe of each attaching flange, a oross-barvextending between and having its ends secured to said lugs, co-operating looking members each having a Vertical attaching fiange lying in surface engagement with the'attaching flange of the first looking member and each having a horizontal fiange projecting over a horizontal edgeof said first attaohing fiange, one of said q attaching flanges being provided with upright keyhole slots, headed studs upon the other attaching fiange fitting said slots to lock said looking members together and fianged side rails eachhaving their flanges seoured to the corrcsponoling flanges of said second locking member.
