This invention relates toimprovements in bushings or chucks especially adapted for use in supporting paper rolls.
An important object of this invention is to provide a chuck or bushing having an annular enlargement intermediate its ends which serves to retain the chuok'or bushing in the centrally arranged opening in a roll of paper so that the chuck or bushing will not be accidentally lost during handling or transportation of the roll of paper. I
A further object of the invention is to provide a chuck or bushing for paper rolls which is simple to apply, efiicient in use and cheap to manufacture.
Other objects and. advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.

In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 generally designates a roll of paper which may be wrapping paper, writing paper, print paper, paper used in building construction, or in fact any kind of paper. As illustrated in Fig. 1, the roll of paper 5 is provided with a centrally arranged longitudinally extending cylindrical opening 6 withthe chuck mam Pate Patented Feb. 28,1922.

in. which; a pair of bushings 8' are adapted tobe; arranged so that theroll of paper may be rotatably supported. The bushings are prov ded. with longitudinally extending openingsor bores 10 which rotatably receive shafts or pivot pins 12 supported in any suitable manner. The bushing illustrated in Fig. provided intermediate its ends witha rounded annular shoulder l4 which, when the bushing is-driven into the opening 6, firmly engages the inner wall thereby prevents. the accidental displacement of. the bushing. It will. that the shoulder at. a point spaced from the end of the same so that the paper outwardly of the rounded annular shoulder l t'may moveinwardly and thereby lock the bushing 8 in position. A head 16 formed integral with the bushing 8 extends from one end of the same and/is of a lesser diameter than the bushing so that the layers of paper may move inwardly to a slight extent for locking the bushing in position. 1
In the form of the invention illustrated in Fig. 2, the bushing '18 is in the form ofa truncated cone and is formed adjacent its rear end with an annular shoulder 20 which is somewhat sharp. The bushing extends inwardly rearwardly of the shoulder 20 and is formed with an extension 22 which allows the layers of paper to move inwardly upon the insertion ofthe bushing 18 into the opening 6. The shoulder 20, which may be said to be V-shaped in cross section, engages the inner wall of the opening 6 so that the accidental displacement of the bushing is prevented.
As illustrated in Fig. 3, the bushing des ignated by the numeral 242 may be formed with an annular groove 26 rearwardly of an annular shoulder 28 similar to the annular shoulder 20. The groove 26 formed in the bushing provides a second annular shoulder 29 rearwardly of the shoulder 28 and of a greater diameter than the shoulder 28. In the use of this form of the invention, a portion of the paper is of course received in the annular groove 28 and the annular shoulders 28 and 29 are therefore firmly engaged with the paper so that the accidental displacement of the bushing is prevented. Rearwardly of the shoulder 29, the bushing 24 is extended inwardly so as to l is. of a tapered formation and is of the opening 6' and be observed 7 14; engages the. paper roll allow the layers of paper to move inwardly and thereby lock the bushing against displacement. p
In the form of the invention illustrated in Fig. 4:, thebushing which is in the form of a truncated cone is formed adjacent its rear end with an annular groove 32. The annular groove 32 which is V-shaped in cross section forms a shoulder 33 and a second shoulder 34: having a diameter greater than the shoulder In this form of the invention, the body of the bushing is also extended inwardly rearwardly of the groove so that. the layers of paper may move in- Wvardly upon the insertion of the bushing into the opening 6.
lVith reference to Fig. 5, it will be observed that the bushing designated by the numeral 36 is enlarged adjacent its rear end forforming an annular shoulder 38 which has a flat bearing surface adapted to en-' gagethe inner wall of the opening 6 so as to firmly hold the bushing in position.
A further modification of the invention 1 is illustrated in Fig.7 wherein the bushing indicated by the numeral 39 is provided adjacent its rear end with an annular groove 40 which may be said to be V-shaped in cross section. The groove 40 forms annular shoulders 42 and 44, the annular shoulder a l being arranged rearwardly of the annular shoulder e2 and'being of a lesser'diameter than the first mentioned shoulder. This form of the invention is, like the form of the invention illustrated in Fig. 1, provided with an extension 46 which is of a lesser diameter than the annular shoulders 42 and 43 so that the layers of. paper may move inwardly and thereby prevent the ac-' cidental removal or displacement of the bushing.
The inventive idea herein disclosed is capahle of additional mechanical expressions and, it is to be understood that the forms of the invention herewith shown and described are merely to be taken as preferred examples of the same.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
l. A bushing for rolls of paper consisting of a plug to be inserted in the axial opening through the roll with the outer end of the plug substantially flush with the end of the roll, the plug being provided with an external annular shoulder spaced inwardly from its outer 'end and the diameter of the outer end of the plug being less than the diameter oi the plug at the shoulder whereby the edges of the inner plies of the roll may engage around the annular shoulder and retain the plug in place.
2. A bushing for rolls of paper consisting of plugs to be inserted in the axial opening through the roll with the outer end of the plug substantially flush with the end of the roll, the plug being tapered toward both ends and having its greatest diameter adjacent its outer end whereby the edges of i the inner plies of the roll may engage around the outer tapered surface of the plug and retain the plug in place.
