This practice is attended with much loss of time in removing :the core caps, cutting down the cores, and replacing :the caps, and also with the loss offth-e cut-off material and the discarded cores, and ent-ails correspond- 1929. Serial No. 343,599.

The above described core cap is but one example of the same, in connection with which my invention may be employed, and it is obvious that other forms and varieties of core caps may be used, since my invention is not concerned with the main core cap, but has to do with an extension core cap to be fitted or applied to the main core cap, in order to make up for the shrinkage of the core structure after the main core caps have been applied.
For use in connection with the particular form of core cap shown, the improved extension core cap consists, as best shown in Figs. 2 and 4c, of an outer flange 3 an inner flange 3 of less depth, and a web 3 connecting the outer ends of said flanges; and in applying the extension cap to the main cap of the core, the outer flange 3 of the extension cap is tightly fitted over the outer flange 2 of the main cap, and the inner flange 3 of the extension cap is abutted at its inner edge against the outer end of the main cap, and constitutes in effect a continuation of the inner surface of said main cap, the inner edge of the flange 3 being in the present case, bent outwardly at intervals as at 3, so as to give the flange a more extended seat against the end of the main cap. A portion of the inner flangeZ-B of the extension cap is bent outwardly toward the outer flange so as to form a stud receiving cavity 3", which is preferably disposed in alinement with the stud receiving cavity 2 of the main cap.
The extension cap may be firmly fastened to the main cap in various ways, as by a driving fit of the outer flange of the extension cap over the outer flange of the main cap, or by indenting the material of the flange of the extension cap into the flange of the main cap, or in other ways, provided that the extension cap will be fixedly held on the main cap and be prevented from circumferential movement relatively thereto.
In manufacturing the extension cap to meet the varying conditions as to the amount of shrinkage of the core structure, the inner flange 3 of the extension cap will be made of different depths, so as to obtain difi erent increased overall lengths of the core structure, and so as to meet the varying and changing degrees of shrinkage to which the cores are subjected.
In the practical use of capped cores, the shrinkage and reduction in length may take place during the period of time in which the cores may be stored before having the paper sheet wound thereon, or it may take place after the paper has been wound thereon, and the core may be found after such shrinkage, to be considerably less in length than the width of the paper sheet which the core was originally designed to accommodate. By theiuse of my improved extension cap, the
original overall length of the core structure may be restored by fitting over one of the core #1 caps, an extension cap having an innerflange of a depth corresponding to the amount of shrinkage, thereby adapting the core structure to receive a sheet of the width originally intended, and avoiding the necessity of thereafter cutting down the core to adapt the same for lesser width of sheets, since after the shrinkage has once taken place and the material of the core has once set, no further material reduction in length is apt to occur.
It will be apparent that by the use of the improved extension core cap, the loss of time in removing the main caps, cutting down of the cores, and the replacement of the caps, and the loss of material incident to the cutting down of the cores, will be entirely obviated, and the capped cores may be employed for their full life Without the necessity of finally discarding them when out down to the minimum length, as has heretofore been done.
It will be understood that the detailed form of the extension cap may be variously changed and modified without departing from the limits of the invention, the particular form shown being that suitable for use in connection with the special form of main core cap illustrated by way of example. The novel feature of the invention in its broader aspects, resides in the employment'of an extension core cap adapted for application to the main core cap to increase the overall length of the core structure, without regard to the specific form and detailed construction of the extension cap per se. It will be understood therefore that the invention is not limited to the exact form, construction, and arrangement of the parts, except in so far as such limitations are specified in the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is o 1. In combination with a hollow core for paper rolls, a core cap applied to the end thereof to adapt the core for mounting and operation in a machine, and an extension annular core cap applied to the main cap to increase the overall length of the structure, said extension core cap being formed with an inwardly extending portion seated against the outer end of the main cap.
2. In combination with a hollow core for paper rolls, a core cap applied to the end thereof, and an extension annular core cap applied to the main core cap to increase the overall length of the structure, said extension core cap being formed with an inwardly extending portion seated against the outer end of the main cap, said inwardly extending portion being provided with a stud receiving cavity at one side to adapt the lengthened core for mounting and operation in a machine.
3. In combination with a core for paper rolls, a core cap applied to the end thereof and formed with a stud receiving cavity at one side to adapt the core for operation in a machine, and an extension core cap applied to the main cap to increase the overall length of the structure, and formed at one side with a stud receiving cavity disposed in alinement Y with that in the main cap.
4. In combination with a hollow core for paper rolls, and a core cap applied to the end of said core and formed with flanges extending respectively at the inner and outer sides of the core, and having a connecting web extending across the end of the core, said cap being provided with a stud receiving cavity, an extension core cap applied to said core cap and provided with an outer flange surrounding and fixedly connected with the outer flange of the core cap, and provided also with an inner and shorter flange extending in wardly from the outer end of the outer flange and terminating at the outer end of the inner flange of the main core cap, said shorter flange constituting in efiect a continuation of the inner flange of the main core cap, and said extension core cap being formed with a stud receiving cavity disposed in alinement with the cavity in the main cap.
5. In combination with a hollow core for paper rolls, an annular core cap applied to the end of the core to adapt the latter for mounting and operation in a machine, and an extension core cap comprising an outer flange surrounding the main cap, and an inner flange extending inwardly from the end of the outer flange and abutting against the outer end of the main cap and forming and extension of the inner wall of the same; whereby the overall length of the core structure is increased to the extent represented by the depth of said inner flange.
6. In combination with a hollow core for paper rolls, a core cap comprising inner and outer annular flanges receiving the end of the core between them, a portion of, said inner flange being bent outwardly toward the outer flange to form a stud receiving cavity to adapt the core for operation in a machine, and an extension core cap comprising an outer flange surrounding the outer flange of the main cap, and a connected inner flange seated against the outer end of the main cap and having a portion bent outwardly to form a stud receiving cavity.
7. In combination with a hollow core for paper rolls, an annular core cap applied to the end thereof to adapt the core for mounting and operation in a machine, and an extension core cap applied to the main cap to increase the overall length of the structure, said extension cap comprising an outer flange surrounding the main cap, and an inner connected flange forming a continuation of the inner Wall of the main cap, the inner edge of said inner flange being bent outwardly at intervals to seat against the outer end of the main cap.
8. An extension core cap adapted for application to the main core cap of hollow paperroll cores to increase the overall length of the core structure, said extension cap comprising an outer flange of a diameter to fit tightly around the main cap, and an inner connected flange to seat against the outer end of the main cap.
9. An extension core cap adapted for application to the main core cap of hollow paperroll cores to increase the overall length of the core structure, said extension cap comprising an outer flange of a diameter to fit tightly around the main cap, and an inner shorter connected flange to seat against the outer end of the main cap.
10. An extension core cap adapted for application to the main core caps of hollow paper-roll cores to increase the overall length of the core structure, said extension cap comprising an outer flange of a diameter to fit tightly around the main cap, and an inner shorter connected flange to seat against the outer end of the main cap, a portion of said inner flange being bent outwardly at one side to form a stud receiving cavity.
