To all whom t may concernl Be it known that I, JOHN H. CnowELL, a citizen of the United States,.residing in Tisbury, in the county of Dukes and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Fountain-Pen Pencil, of which the following is a specification.

The purpose of my invention is to provide a writing utensil which can at will be used either as an ink writing pen or as a lead pencil.

To these ends my invention consists of the new and novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-Figure 1 is an elevation, partly in section, of my invention. Figure 2 is a longitudinal section of the rotatable taper pointed sleeve and the internally threaded tube carried thereby. Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the lead holder, showing the pencil lead held therein. Figure 4 is a longitudinal view of the holder with the lead removed.

Like reference letters and numerals indicate like parts in the several views.

Referring to the drawings, 1 represents Q the body or ink containing member of a fountain pen which supports and holds the pen protecting cap 2. Secured to and extending through and beyond the outer end of said cap and axially positioned within said cap is a tube 3 provided in one side with a longitudinal open slot 17, and at its inner end with a disk or termination of enlarged 'cross section 7, which is tted snugly with-y in the cavity of chamber 15 of the cap 2.'

Within said tube 3 is disposed a plunger 4 provided at one Side, preferably near its rear end, with a laterally projecting fin or lug 16 longitudinally slidable withm said tube and threaded for engagement with the internal thread of a revoluble tube 5, within which said tube 3 is disposed, to thereby actuate said plunger to move the lead 12 longitudinally within the tube 3. Said internally threaded tube 5 is suspended within the taper pointed sleeve 6, and is at its upper end rigidly secured to said sleeve in such manner that its axial line will coincide with 'the axial lines of the tube 3 and of the open tapered end of said sleeve. Said sleeve 6 is sup-- ported on the cap 2 and is revoluble thereon in both directions. It is held on the cap 2 by a set screw 8 passing through the side with the groove 9 affords means for movlng the sleeve 6 longitudinally to release and allow the end 11 of the tube 3 to expand for the insertion of the lead l2, after which the set screw is returned to its normal engagement with the groove 9 returning the sleeve to its normal position and thereby clamping the tube end upon the lead and holding it in position for use. (Fig. 1.) Sald sleeve, as shown, surrounds the forward end of the cap 2, and the tube 3 and 5.

In the practical operation of my invention, the several parts being assembled, as shown and described, with the lead contained with- 1n the tube 3, the sleeve 6 is revolved in one direction carrying with it the tube 5 whereupon the iin 16 in engagement with the internal thread of the tube 5 forces the plunger 4 ahead and causes the lead to protrude into position for use. Reversing the revolution of the sleeve withdraws the plunger into the tube 3. When it is desired to use the pen for writing with ink, the cap 2 carrying the sleeve and connected parts is removed from the end of the ink container.

For the insertion of a new piece of lead the sleeve 6 is revolvedl upon the cap 2 until the set screw 8 moving in the groove 9 registers with the slot 13, then the sleeve is moved rearward longitudinally o n the cap 2 thereby bringing the set screw 8 up into the slot 13 and allowing the tapered end of the tube 3 to open for the insertion of the lead. Sliding the sleeve forward andbringing the set screw 8 into engagement with the groove 9 clamps the tapered end of the tube 3 upon the lead and holds it in position for use.

I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

The combination With the pen protecting cap of a fountain pen, of a slotted leadholding tube rigidly secured to and centrally suspended within said cap a lead propelling plunger disposed Within saldtube for longitudinal movement therein and provided with a laterally directed extension threaded on its outer edge and projecting out through the slot of said tube, a taper pointed sleeve revolubly mounted on said cap, an internally threaded tube rigidly secured to and revoluble with said sleeve and centrally disposed therein surrounding said slotted tube with its internal thread engaged b the threaded ex-I tension of Said plunger, a l arranged as described and adapted to serve as and for the purposes specified.

A Wrlting utensil comprising an ink container, a pen carried by said container on one end thereof, a pen protecting cap disposed on said end of said container, and carrying centrally disposed therein a lead conthread engaged by the threaded extension of said plunger to thereby actuate said plunger to move the lead in said slotted tube when said sleeve is revolved on the ca 4. The combination with a iiountain protecting cap provided with an encircling annular groove, and a second roove longitudinally directed and disposed, in one side of said cap, at an angle to and communicatlng with said annular groove, of a sleeve mounted on said cap for rotatable and sliding movements thereon, and a set screw eX tending through one side of said sleeve into engagement with said annular roove.

5. Writing' utensil comprlsing an ink contalner carrylng a pen, a pen protecting cap mounted on said container, and carrying a container for a encil lead, and means positioned within sald pencil lead container for propelling the lead therein, a sleeve mounted on -sald cap for'rotating and slidable movements thereon, and carrying means for actuating said lead propelling means on the rotation of said sleeve.
