Be it known that I, JOHN C. MCGEE, a cit-izen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the County of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 'in a Bipping Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.

This invention relates to a class of cutting implements. I

My invention has :tor its object primarily to provide a device designed to be'employed especially by tailors, dressmakers and other *persons for ripping stitched seams of cloth and like material by using cutting blades commonly made for safety razors,-it being generally accepted that blades of this class may be employed more effectually for accomplishing such work without dangeu of cutting' the material than the use of knives or scissors of ordinary types as' well as enabling the work to be executed with facility, and which is of a form adapted to allow the utilization of safety razor blades when discarded by persons owing tddullness from shaving. The invention consists essentially of a holder with a' groovedbody provided between'two yielding walls so-that a safety razor bladd may be removably inserted in the groove, and in the central parts of the walls lengthwise of the groove aretwo opposed recesses eommunicating with' the groove for receiving and holding forms of blades having an enlarged or'beaded lengthwise edge so that the cutting edge of the blades will eXtend beyond the mouth of the holder. To provide for also accommodating in the holder types of flat blades having two cutting edges, in the holder at the bottom of the groove is a substantially V- shaped recess which communicates with the groove, and protruding into the groove from parts of its walls above the' opposed recesses may be two complemental members for removably clamping the blades in the holder to prevent tendency of lateral movements of the blades. v

A further object of the invention is to provide a ripping device of a simple and durable Construction which may be 'made in any suitable shape and size.

With these and other objects in View, the invention will be hereinafter more fully described with reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this' specficaton in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the Views, and& will then be pointed out in the' claim at the end of the description.

The device has a holder 10 which may be i made of any suitable material in any desired size, and this holder' is composed of a body part' 11 of somewhat an' elongated substan-` tially rectangular shape constructed o-f'two spaced walls 12 and 13 with one of their lengthwise edges being joined togetheryas I at' 14:, to provide a'groove l'therebetween having its mouth or entrance extending from the joined edge 14 through-the ends and second lengthwise edge of the' body part.

The body part 11 is preferably made of spring sheet metal to provide yielding walls,

and :the walls arespaced apart so that a safety razor or blade may befreely inserted into the groove 15.

In the central part of the inner face of the yielding wall 12 and eXtendinglengthwise of the wall is a recess 16, and in the central part of the inner face of the yielding wall 13 and also extending lengthwise of the wall is a recess 17. The recesses 16 and 17 are in opposition as well as being in communication with the groove 15, and both of these recesses may be of any appropriate shapes and sizes, though each recess is preferably concaved transversely as illustrated.

In the bottom of the groove 15 between the walls of the body part 11 is another recess 18 of approximately a V-shape in cross section, and this recess also communicates with the groove 15 under the opposed recesses 16 and 17. v i

Protrudinginto the groove 15 from opposed parts of the walls`12 and 13 of the body part 11 of the holder are two complemental members 19 and 20 which may be in the forms of ribs extending lengthwise of the walls above the recesses 16 and 17, and these ribs are in closely spaced opposition so that? a safety razor blade may be removably accommodated therebetween as well as being clamped against accidental displacexnent or liability to move laterally in the holder when the blade is used. ?rotrudng from one end of the body part 11 of the holder may be a tang, as 21, and on the tang may be mounted a handle as 22 of a' suitable type to allow the device to be Conveniently employed for ripping the stitches of seams 01 cloth and other material.

In the holder 10 as thus constructed I may employ any of the forms of blades, as 23, 24, 25, Fig. 4:, which are oi' types commonly used in safety razors, especially blades that have been dulled by use. The form oi the blade 24 has a single entting lengthwise edge 26, and its second lengthwise edge is enlarged or provided with a' marginal beach as 27. This form, of blade is of a size se that whenvapplied to the holder 10 by being slidably passed endwise into' the free open end of the groove 15 of the body part of the holder the bead 27 will be disbosed in the recesses 16 and 17, while the cutting edge part 26 of theblade will ext-end beyond the mouth f the groove, as shown in Fig. 1 The forms of the blades 23- and 25 each have two lengthwise cutting edges 28 and 29, 'and when either of these blades are inserted in the groove 15 of the holder 10 one of their cutting edges will be disposed in the V-shaped reeess 18 oi: the holden while the second cntting edge of the blade eX- tends somedistaneebeyond the mouth ofthe groove 15. The grooved body part 11' of the holder is'made of a size relative to the sizes of standard safety blades so that when a the blades are removably mounted in the holder the cutting edge of each blade will protrude sufiiciently from the holder to enable the projeeting part of the blade to be passed between strps of stitched cloth and i fore' rese'rve to myself the right to make such changes as thereof.

Having thus described my invention, .l claim as new and' desire to secure by Letters Patent:

A holder for safety razor blades oomprising a tang, and j aws at the ends thereof and integral with the tang, said jaws inclining outwardly from their 'juncture to a substantally intermediate point, with the said intermediate points of the opposite jaws outwardly arched and thence curving inwardly near the outer edges of thejaws into close proximity and forming, with the ontwardly inclining portions, spaced bearings for engaging double edged blades near their e'dges when inserted between the jaws, the outwardly arched intermediate points being arranged and formed Vfor the reception of the edge bead of a single edged blade therefairly fall within the scope between, with the intermediate portion of;

said blade held between said inwardly cnrved outer portions of the jaws.
