Description

Aug. 28, 1923. 1,466,123
J. H. D. EVERETT SAFETY RAZOR Filed June 9, 1921 Patented Aug. 28, 1923.
/ OHN H. D. EVERETT, OF WAUKEGAN, ILLINOIS.
SAFETY RAZOR.
Application filed June 9, 1921. Serial No. 476,168.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN H. D. EVERETT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of VVa-ukegan, county of Lake, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Razors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in safety razors, and has for its principal object the provision of an improved construction of this character which will be highly efficient in use and capable of economical manufacture. The present invention constitutes an improvement over that which is disclosed in my prior application for improvements. in safety razors, filed July 23, 1920.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will behest understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which.
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a blank from which my improved safetyrazor is formed,
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of my improved safety razor,
Fig. is a top plan view of the same,
Fig. 4 is a sectional detail view taken substantially on line 4i4 of Fig. 2,
Fig. 5 is a plan view of a safety razor blade embodied in the invention,
Fig. 6 is a detail view taken substantially on line 66 of Fig. 3.
In manufacturing my improved safety razor the blade holder 8 and handle 9 is formed from a blank 10 stamped from a single piece of material having integral portions 9' at one end thereof and diverging jaw supporting strips 12 carrying oppositely arranged jaws 141 and 14' joined together by a portion 16. The blank 10 is preferably formed of spring steel so that when the blank is folded symmetrically with respect to a central dividing line of the blank indicated at 11 the jaws 14 and 14: will be ,permitted to slightly give way from each other to facilitate mounting the razor blade in shaving position on the holder.
The forming of the safety razor is as Y follows The integral portions 9 are folded upon each other along the line 11 to form a. handle 9 and are secured together by spot-welding or the like. The strip portions 12; constituting the shank 12, are spot Welded or secured together by any other suitable means. A portion of the side strips 12 forming the shank 12 are bent or curved away from each other, as at 13, forming a support for the blade holder 8. The jaws 14 and 14 of the blank 10 are then bent substantially at right angles With respect to the outer portions of the strips 12 and12 and extendingsubstan tially parallel to each other forming clamping jaws 15. The lower portions of the clamping jaws 1 5 are bent or looped outwardly, as at 15, slightly extending beyond the outer surfaces of the jaws 15, and serving as a guard. The portion16 of the blank 10 between the loops 15' thus formed. is bent substantially at right angles to the jaws 15 and is provided with serrations or. teeth along its outer edge to form a blade guard; Laterally projecting from each of the jaws 15 are projections or lugs 17. each provided on their inner surfaces with a groove 18 for the reception of a safety razor blade 19. The side edges of the safety razor blade 19 are provided with notches 20 andQO adapted to receive the projections or lugs17. This arrangement prevents the safety razor blade 19 from a vertical reciprocatingmovement and the groove 18 prevents laterally withdrawal of the said safety razor blade during its operation. A slit 21 is provided between. the handle portions forming thehandle 9 in which the safety razor blade 19 is inserted when it is desired to sharpen the same by stropping or otherwise.
lugs 17 prevent the blade from a vertical,
reciprocating movement and the grooves 18 which receives the side edges of the safety razor blade 19, prevents laterally withdrawal of the saidblade when in operation.
In manufacturing my improved safety razor it requires but one operation to punch the blank from the material, and but a slight operation to shape the said blank into the form heretofore described/ My improved safety razor can be manufactured at a small cost and produced'in. large-iiquantities.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of constructionlor carrying my invention into effect, this is capable oi variation and modification without departa ing. from the spirit of the, invention. 1, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details, of construction setlforth, but desire to'avail myself of such variations and modifications as come; within the scope: of the appended claims.
Having, described my invention,- what L. claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. Ina safety razor, comprising. in com bination with asafety razor blade having notches formed in its opposite correspond .ingfends' intermediate the edges thereof, of
a holder. for said blade,-saidholder comprising a blank struck from a singlepiece of material haying one. end portion bent' centrallytup'on itselttojform a handle and the other end otsaidj blank comprising diverge ing j aw supportingportions and oppositel disposed resilien'tjaws joined together by a serrated portionfsaid aws being bent sub-- stantially at right angles with respect to. said serrated f portion and lateral projec-- tion's carried'by said jaws adapted to engage saidjnot'clresjor holding said blade in;
shaving position, substantially as described.
21A safety razor formed of an integral connected blank comprising at one end a handle portion' doubled centrally upon itself. and at the ioth'erend a transverse guard portion,'. the ends of the gnardnportion being" con-nectedwith the handleirportionjby sepa rated farms, said arms being bentupyat the ends offsaid guard to form, sprin'gclamping and at the other end a transverse guard portion, the ends of the guard portion being connected with thehandle portion by sepai rated arms, said-arms being bent up at the ends of said 'uard toform shrin clam oin b a r C O jaws yielding: through the resiliency of said arms to clamp the ends: of a razorblade between them in operativerelation with said guard, groovedlugs projecting from the edges of said jaws to engage notches in the ends of a blade, in combination with a blade havin'gnotches in its ends to receive said lugs, substantially as described,
4; A safety razor. comprising a blade holder formed from a blank punched from a singlepiece of inaterial the sides of said holder being curved symmetrically inwardly and extendingparallelwithrespect' to each other to a point where said blank is folded centrally upon itself forming a handle; a safety razor blade having notches; in itsflside edges-mounted on said'holder; andprojections on each'offthe sides of said I holder having grooves on, their innersui JOHN I-L-D.
