KEY-LOCKING Application filed May 31,
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, PERCY R. Morrrr'r, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Pa tucket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented new and use-' ful Improvements in a Key-Locking Es: cutcheon, of which the following is a specificat1on. This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in a key lockingx escutcheon, and it has for its primary object to provide an escutcheon embodying means for preventing the rotation or turning of the key after having beendisposed within the lock and actuated to render the latter operative. I
The invention further resides in an improved escutcheon having means for preventing the withdrawal of the key as well as preventing .rotation of the key to function properly.
In the drawing,
Figure l is a vertical section through the improved escutcheon depicting the key-locking device in its operative position and showing the door and its lock by dotted lines;
. Figure 2 is a front elevation thereof taken about on line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the escutcheon per se; and
Figure 4 is a similar view of the slide element.
Referring more in detail tothe drawing, the numeral 1 indicates the door having thev usual lock 2 and key openings 3 leading through the wood on opposite sides thereof to the out-side escutcheon 4 and the inside escutcheon, the latter constituting and embodying the subject matter of the present invention. V
The improved escutcheon consists of a plate 5 having the key opening 6 and a transversely intersecting groove 7 of dovetailed section, the latter being designed to receive the slide 8 of corresponding cross section.
- The slide is provided intermediate its ends with a screw threaded aperture 9 to receive a locking screw 10, the same having a knurled outer end and a smooth. tapering inner end 11.
In operation, the key 12 is inserted through the escutcheon plate 5 into the lock '2 and then turned to throw the lock bolt to secure the door. The key is then turned sufnsouroi-rnoiv.
. Specification of Letters Patent. 'PQEQ M d an, 31 1922,
1921. Serial No. 473,852.
ficientlyto be engaged by the locking screw and be held against turning in such direction as to unlook the door, i. e. the key is rotated for one complete turn to throw the bolt of firmly against unauthorized actuation but also prevent dislodgment of the same 'by some one from the outsidethe slide performing this latter function. The. device is simple in construction and can be expeditiously manufactured at but little cost so that it can replace the ordinary escutcheon with but 1 slightly additional expense. The opening 3 betweenv the plate 5 and the lock 2 provides I a chamber into which the screw is withdrawn when it is desired to actuate the key under normal conditions. It is therefore unnecessary to remove the slide except to remove the key when'the screw is first displaced and the slide moved lengthwise from the groove. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1 1 An escutcheon comp-rising a plate having a key opening therethrough and an intersection dovetailed groove extending across the plate, a slide mounted in the groove and formed with a threaded opening intermedi-' ate its ends, and a locking screw threaded in the slide opening and having a knurled outer end and a tapered smooth inner end for movement into the path of the bolt-throwing part of a key.
. 2. An escutcheon comprising a plate havinga key opening therethrough and an intersecting dovetailed groove, a slide mounted in the groove and formed with an aperture intermediate its length, and a locking screw threaded through the slide aperture and formed on its inner end with a smooth tapered point. 7
3. An escutcheon comprising a plate having a key opening therethrough and an interof a key. tWo subscribing Witnesses.
4. An escutcheon comprising a plate hav PERCY R. MOFFITT. ing av key opening, a support secured across Witnesses: the opening, and a screw threaded through M. A. l'ilrrresnrnr seating groove, a slide mounted in the groove, opening of the plate for engagement with a 10 and a locking screw threaded through the key.
slide and passed through the plate opening In testimony whereof I have signed my for engagement With the bolt-throwing pert name to this specification in the presence of said support and extending through the key' J. A. MILLER.
