This invention relates to ink-wells and the present application is a substitute for and a continuation of a prior'application, iiled by me on November 26, 1919, Serial No. 340,918. It is the primary purpose and object of the present invention to provide an inkwell of the selffclosing type which is of such construction that `dust and other eX'-` traneous foreign matter will be eiieotually excluded from the ink chamber.
It is also a more particular object of my invention to provide a. self-closing ink-well of Vthe type generally preferred for office use having a removable top or cover extending over the ink receiving chamber, said cover beingprovided with a rectangular opening therein, together with a pair of sensitively mounted counter-balanced closure members pivotally movable in said opening and hormally completely closing the same. These closing members are so constructed and arranged that they are wholly contained within the cover opening and do not project into the ink receiving chamber, said members readily yielding to the pressure of the pen point so that the latter will notin any manner be injured when the pen point is inserted into the ink chamber, or withdrawn therefrom.
It is an important object and purpose of my present construction to provide upon the cover ofthe well and the closure members which are mounted therein co-acting means which will absolutely prevent any possibility of the closure members being displaced or disconnected from the cover when they are moved from their normally closed positions by the users of pens, and which means will permit of the position or manual disassemblage or separation of the closure members and the cover only when said members occupy a certain definite position Within the cover opening.
My invention has for a further object to provide a form and construction of the cover and the closure members which will permit of easy and quick disassemblage of the parte for cleansing purposes while at the same time, when said closure members are in their normal closed positions within the cover opening, they will provide a substantially air and dust tight closure for Vsaid opening and the ink chamber.
It is a further object of my invention to simplify the construction of devices of this character whereby their manufacturing cost may be reduced to a minimum, and at the same time enhance the ornamental and attractive appearance of the ink-well as a whole.
With the above and vother objects in view,
my invention comprehends the provision of an ink-well characterized in the particulars above referred to, and in the form,con struction and relative arrangement of its several parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and subsequently incorporated in the subjoined claims.

Referring in detail to the drawing the body 5 of the ink-well is preferably formed in the usual manner of mouldedl glass, but if desired may be constructed of other materials and in many other sizes and ornamental shapes than that indicated in the drawing.

This cover is adapted to be seated upon the upper surface of the well body 5 within the flanges 7, 7. The vprojections 13 on the side walls of the opening 11 are produced by cutting away or recessing said sidewalls as shown at 15 and 16. Therecesses 15 extend horizontally below the apexes 14 of the projecting por-V tions' 13, while the recesses 16 constitute obliquely extending channels which extend upwardly from thel apexes 141 to the rabbeted edges 10 of the cover. At its free lower end the lip 22 is rounded or convex as at 26, and is provided at opposite sides with the transversely projecting rounded lugs or extensions 27.
In assembling the closure members within the cover, the lugs 27 are engaged in the upper open ends ofthe inclined channels 15, and said closure members moved downwardly in the opening 9 until the laterally projecting flanges 21 seat upon the shoulders 11. In this normal position of the two closure members, the convex surfaces 26 at the lower ends of the lip 22 are in contact at the apexes ll of the projections 13, and the lip extensions 27, and the side edges of the lips 22 extend beneath these overhanging or pro` jecting parts of the cover as clearly shown in Figures 2 and 3 of the drawing whilev the convex surfaces 25 of the lugs 2st are engaged upon the seats 17. It will be observed that in this position the lugs or extensions 27 are disposed immediately below the salii ent portions 28 formed on the opposite side walls of the opening 9 at the juncture of the recesses 15 and channels 16. A
lVhen the pen is inserted into the ink chamber, the pen point, regardless of the direction from which it is projected into the opening` 9 of the cover, will be directed either by the inclined surfaces of the lips 22 or the conical inclined surfaces 12-between the contacting` convex surfaces 26 of the closure members. The pressure of the pen point upon these convex faces causes the closure members to separate or open, the lugs 2-l rocking freely on the seats 17, so that the closure members will move to positions approximating that illustrated in dotted lines in Figure 1 thereof. 0f course.y there may be a greater movement of one of these members than of the other, depending upon which member is subjected to the `greatest pressure. In this movement of the closure members to open position the lugs 27 will move beneath the salient projections 2S and into the recesses 15 on the side walls of the opening 9. ln this manner the pen may be freely inserted, without obstruction or retardation by the closure members, into the ink chamber. It will be observed that the relatively heavy body portion 20 is disposed wholly on the opposite side of the pivot centerof the closure member from the lip 22, so that as the pen is withdrawn this body, which serves as a counter-balancing medium, will immediately return ,the closure member to its normal position.` Thus the convex Cil faces 26 will at all times bear against the opposite sides of pen, and as the pen point is drawn upwardly between these faces lthe surplus ink is drained therefrom back into the ink chamber. As is well known, certain types of pen points have their edges irregularly `formed and provided with recesses and projections. Certain types of pen-points are provided with projections on `their edges which might possibly catch on the opposed cnds of the closure members as thepen is withdrawn and lift the pivots from their seats.; thus resulting in the complete detachf ment of the said members from thev cover. My improved `device prevents such possible displacement of the closure members.` This is due to the fact that except when said closure members are disposed ina certain. delinite position in the cover opening, the lugs or extensions 27 thereof are out of alignment with the channels 16 and extend beneath the salient projections 28 on the side walls of the cover opening. Accordingly, it is seen that these lugs render it entirely impossible for the pivot lugs 241 of the closure members to lift from their seats 17 during the operation of the device. When it is desired `to remove the closure members from the cover for the purpose of cleaning vthe same they are moved upwardly while disposed with' their lugs 27 in line with the channels 16. In the 'illustrated embodiment of the invention l have shown the channels 16 located andarranged so that the lugs 27 are in alignment therewith when the closure members arein their normal closed positions. It will be understood, however, that this is not `an `essential consideration as these channels might be otherwise arranged. i
From the foregoing description, considered in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction, manner of operation and several advantages of my improved inlr-well will be fully understood. It is to be observed that when the cover members are in their normal closed positions, the `flanges 21 thereof, seat within the rabbeted edges of the opening 9, and the upper surfaces of said closure members are entirely flush with lthe upper surface of the cover. Thus, there `are no warts of the closure members projecting exteriorlv of the openinf 11 and beyond the surface of the cover. n
My invention is primarily designed for use in connection with low oi' flat rectangular ink-wells of the type generally preferred for olice use, and by reason of the construction and mounting of the closure members in the cover, as above explained, it will beappreciated that the ornamental and attractive appearance of ink-wells of this type is maintained and enhanced; Nevertheless, the parts can be easily and quickly `assembled or disassembled, and may be readilyucleaned and the chamber replenished with ink when necessary. Owing tothe complete closureof thefopening in the cover 8 by the members 19, dust lor' dirt is eifectually excluded from the well cavity or chamber, so that the con tents thereof will be kept in a free iowing condition, and excessive 'evaporationof the ink prevented.
Ihave herein shown and described an embodiment of the invention lwhich I have found satisfactorily `meets every requirenient of an`ink-well of this type, andwhich is handy, convenient and serviceable in practical use. lt is, however, to be understood that the device may also be applied to inkwells of various other-forms, and that the several cooperating elements above referred to and the Vdetail features thereof are also susceptible to vmanlyr modifications. An ink-well comprising a body` having aninlrchamber, a' cover for said chamber provide'dwvith an opening, a ,counter-bal- "anced closurel member removably associated with said cover, lone of said parts having pivot vlugs and the other .being provided with recesses Jto receive said lugs, and one of said parts being further provided with means to close the open ends of said rece'ssesw4 'l 2. An ink-well comprising a body having an open topink chamber, a removable cover for said chamber having an opening therein,
a' 4pair of[counter-balanced vclosure members normally closing said openingand each have integral pivotflugs, said cover being provided' with recesses at opposite sides of the opening the-rein to receivesaid pivot lugs and flanges on said-closur`e members overlying 'said recesses.
An ink-wellcomprising a body having an ink chamber, a removable clover for said chamber provided with a 'rectangular opening therein, :counter-balanced closure membersf'or said opening removably associated with said cover, the closure members and the cover having coacting means pivotally supporting the closure members inoperative positioin and said cover having stop shouldersIimiting the movement of the closure members to their normal closing positions.

An Aink-well comprising a body having an open top ink chamber,a removable cover for saidchamber Lhaving a rectangular openingtherein andv pivotr receiving `recesses in the opposite side walls of said opening and in spaced relation to each end thereof, `a pair of closure members closing said opening, each having pivot lugsinterinediate 4of yits 'ends for removable engagement in the correspending recesses, and said members having opposed inwardly and downwardly inclined portions normally contacting with each other at their extremities, said cover having shoulders at the opposite ends of the opening and the closure members adapted for engagement upon the respective shoulders to limit the pivotal movement of said members to their closed positions and means carried by said members to close the open sides of said pivot receiving recesses.

An ink-Well comprising a body having an ink chamber, a cover for said chamber provided-With an opening, closure members for said opening, said closure members and the cover having separable coacting means to pivotally support the closure members upon the cover and each of the closure members having flanges projecting laterally upon the edges of the opening in the cover.

An ink-Well comprising a body having an open top ink chamber, a removable cover for said chamber having an opening therein, a pair of counter-balanced closure members normally closing said opening and each having vintegral pivot lugs, said cover being provided with recesses at opposite sides of the opening therein to receive said pivot lugs, and longitudinal flanges on said closure members overlying said recesses, said cover having stop shoulders upon which said flanges are normally engaged. f' 7. An ink-Well comprising a body having an ink chamber, ak cover for said chamber having an opening therein, a closure member fior said opening associated With said cover, said closure member and the cover having coacting means permitting of the disconnection of said member from the cover, only when the closure member is in its normal closed position and preventing such disconnection in all other positions of the closure member. e

An ink-Well comprising a body having an ink chamber, a cover for saidchamber having an opening therein, a closure member Jfor said opening pivotally mounted upon the cover, said closure member and the cover having coacting means permitting of the disconnection of said member from the cover onlyV when the closure member is in its `normal closed position, and preventing such disconnection in all other positions of the closure member.

An ink-Well comprising a bodyhaving an .ink chamber, a cover for said chamber having an opening therein and pivot receiving recesses in the opposite side walls of said opening, a-closure member associated with the cover and having pivot lugs adapted tobeengaged in the respective recesses, said closure member and the cover being further provided with coacting means permiting of the disconnection of said member from thercover only When the closure member is in its normal closed position,
and preventing such disconnection in all other positions of the closure member.
10.V An ink-Well comprising a body having an ink chamber,- a cover for said chamber having an opening therein, a pair of closure members arranged in opposed relation Within said opening, said cover having open ended recesses andthe closure members provided-With pivot lugs for engagement in said-recesses, said closure members and the cover also having additional means permitting of the disconnection of said members from the vcover only when the closure members are in their normal closed positions, and preventing such disconnection in all other positions of the closure members.

An ink-Well-comprising a body having an ink chamber, a removable cover for said chamber having an opening therein, a pair of counter-balanced closure members normally closing said opening, said cover having open ended recesses at opposite sides of the opening and the closure members provided With pivot lugs for engagement in said recesses, and means automatically rendered operative upon a movement of either of the closure members from its normal closed position to prevent the disengagement of the pivot lugs thereon from the recesses in the cover. y

An ink-Well comprising a body having an ink chamber, a removable cover for said chamber having an opening therein and provided in the oppositeside-Walls of said opening with open ended pivot receiving recesses and obliquely disposed channels communicating With the respective recesses and converging towards each other downwardly therefrom, and a pair of counterbalanced closure members adapted to be arrangedin `opposed relation Within said opening and each having pivot lugs for engagement in the corresponding recesses on the opposite side Walls of the cover opening, each of said closure members being further provided With transversely projecting lugs movable through said channels and' permitting of the disconnection of said members from the cover when the closure members are in their normal closed positions, the side'.\valls of the cover opening having additional means with which said lugs of the closure members coact to prevent such disconnection in all other positions of the closure members. An ink-Well comprising a body having an ink chamber, a cover for said chamber provided with anA opening, and counterbalanced closure members pivotally mounted upon Vthe cover Within said opening and having rectilinearly extending upper surfaces flush with t-he upper surface of the cover when said members are in their normal closed positions. An ink-well comprising a body having y an ink chamber, a cover for said chamber provided With an opening, and counterbalanced closure members :for said opening pivotally mounted upon the cover having means coacting With the cover to prevent detachment ot the closure members when the latter are moved from their normal closed positions, said closure members having rectiiinearly extending upper surfaces occupying the same plane as the upper surface of said cover in the closed positions of said members.

An ink-Well cover having an opening therein, closure members for said opening rmovably mounted upon said cover, said c10- sure members and the cover having coacting means permitting of the disconnection of the closure members from the cover in one position of said closure members with respect to the cover but preventing such disconnection in all other positions of said closure members.`
