My invention relatcsto improvements in inlrstands.

An object of the invention is to provide self-closing inlrstand into which pen may be dipped freely and which is eelt-sealing against the admission thereto of air, dust and the like.

Another object or' the invention is to provide a simplev durable and inexpensive article of the present nature, which may be readily replenished with ink and which has few parts adapted easily to be disassembled and reassembled to permit of the ready cleansing thereof.

Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that my improved inlrstand includes a l'lat topped base formed with an inlrwell 11 having a bay 12 to receive a pen. A cover 13, freely removable from the base 10, nor- V mally covers the well 11 and bay 12. YThat part of the cover 13 for the bay 12 has a pen receiving aperture 14 therein through which a pen is directed in the dipping thereof in the bay 12. Formed on the underside of the cover 13 is a continuous depending' i-lange 15, the same conforming' with the month of the recess .toi-med by said well 11 and bay 1'2, said 'llannjc being; adapted to tit snugly down into saidY well and bay. This flange 15is formed so that a part thereot completely encircles said aperture 14C. the inner wall formed by said encircling part ot said flange being in continuation ot the wall o'E said aperture 1a (Fig. 2). A gate G includes a thin plate member comprising a body portion 16, shank 1'? and head 1S. lt also includes a hanger 19. which is riveted to the body portion 16 at its upper end and bent at its lower end tp form a stirrup to receive a the head 18 ot' said gate is normally heldjby y the weighted hanger 19 with the upper face thereof closed against the lower edge ot that part of the liange 15 encircling the aperture lil. rllhus, it will be seen that the cover 13 closes the. well and bay proper, while the head 18 or the gate closes the aperture 14E in the cover.

ln use, a pen is inserted through the aperture let and against the closed gate head 18. The bringing` of the pen to bear slightly upon the head 18, causes the plate member oit the gate G to tilt, the head 18 giving way to the pen as it is directed into the bay 'l2 and dipped in ink therein which is supplied thereto from the well 11. Upon the withdrawal of the pen from the bay 12. the gate G is closed by the action oit the weighted hanger 19. ln reglenishing` the well 11 with ink, a user merely lifts the cover 13 Jfrom the base 10 and pours the new charge of inl( into said well. rllhe cleansing' ot the inkstand is simple. rllhe cover 13 and gate G are removed from the base 10, said parts thus disassembled beine' thereafter readily washed, individually, under a faucet or in a basin.

It is to be'observed that the depending` flange 15 on lthe cover 13 keeps said covei.l from sliding or turning on the base 10 and that that portion olf-said flange co-operating with the base 10 at the'mouth of the bay also 'forms the aperture sealing' seat for the head 18 of the G. Further, it will be observed that the flange 15 holds the trunnions 21 seated in the depressions 22, thus keeping the gate G normally axially posi* tioned under thrusts of a pen against the head 18.

Having described .my invention, what l claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is: Y v

An inlrstand comprising a llat topped base formed with a well having` a bay to receive a pen, and also formed with depressions in the top thereof between said well lll) and hay, a freely removable cover litting over said Well and bay, said cover having a pen receiving aperture in that part thereof for said hay and also having a Continuous depeinling` flange adapted to lit snuglj7 into tl e mouth of the Well and the mouth of the hay, a portion or said lange encircling said aperture, a gate disposed in said hav and ineluding trunnions removably seated in the depressions in said hase, said gate being yieldingly held against the underside of said aperture encircling flange portion and adapted to yield to the pressure of a pen inserted through said aperture and directed into said hay, said flange serving to hold the Cover against turning on the base and serving 'fur- ARTHUR A.
