UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK KOTOWSKI, OF ENSLEY, ALABAMA.
RIVET-SETTING TOOL.
Application filed July 6,
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK Ko'rowsKI, a citizen of United States, residing at Ensley, in the county of Jefferson and State of Aiabama, have invented new and useful llmprovements in Rivet-Setting Tools, of which the follovs'ing is a s ecification.
This invention re ates to devices especially adapted for use in setting rivets and is especially designed for use in setting rivets in boiler seams, smoke stacks and the like.
An object of the present invention is the provision of a device by means of which a rivet may be backed up and the backing up means firmly held in place.
Another object is the provision of a device of the above character which may be easily and quickly adjusted in position and firmly held in place` without undue strain upon or injury to the workman.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention `further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section through a tubular member with the invention shown in position for use.
Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the same.
Figure 3 is a transverse section on the line 3 3 of Figure 2.
Referring in detail to the drawings, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates a tubular member such as a prlrtion of a boiler, a smoke stack or the The invention which is designed for backing up rivets incident to riveting the seam of the tubular member, comprises a body 11, one end of which is bifurcated to provide spaced ears 12, between which is pivoted a lever 13. This lever is pivoted intermediate its ends and is provided at one end with a handle or grip 14 and at its opposite end with a head 15. This head is concaved or otherwise formed to provide a seat 16 for the reception of the head of a rivet 17, so that the head of the rivet may be received within this seat during the operation of upsetting or riveting the opposite end. y
Detachably secured to the body 11, is an extension arm 18, one end of this arm be- 1922. Serial No. 573,185.
ing provided with a toot 19 for Contact with the inner surface of the tubular member l0. The opposite end of the arm 18 is telescopicaliy receivable within the body 11 and is held in place by means of a pin 20. B
making the arm 18 removable, arms of di ferent lengths may be substituted so as to adapt tbc device for use with tubular members of diiferent diameters.
In the use of the invention, the device is placed within the tubular member with the head ot a rivet within the seat 1 6. The opposite end of the lever 13 is grasped to force the head of the lever 13 into positive contact with the rivet head and the foot 19 of the arm'18 into positive contact with the inner surface ot the tubular member. The devices may thus be securely held during the riveting operation. Strain upon or possible injury to the workman is thus prevented, as the power required for holding the device in place is reduced to a minimum.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention what is claimed is:
1. A. rivet setting tool of the character described comprising a body, the upper end of said body terminating with-spaced apertured ears, a lever pivoted intermediately of its ends within said ears, said lever having a handle at one end and a concaved head provided at its opposite end for the reception of the head of a rivet therein, a detachably secured apertured arm terminating with an enlarged portion at its lower end to provide a suitable supporting foot, said arm being telescopically received Within the body and held in place through the medium of suitable pins passing therethrough.
2. The combination with a tubular inember, of a rivet backing tool comprising a body, a lever pivotally secured intermediate its ends to said body, a rivet engaging head upon one end of said lever, an extension arm telescopicaliv connected to the tool body for contact with the inner surface of the tubular member and means engageable with the body and arm for removably holding the latter in position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
FRANK KOTOWSKI.
