To all whom it may concern:
.Be it known that I, MAREA H. Sironi., a citizen of the United States, residing at Beatrice, in the county of Gage and State of Nebraska7 have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Punch and Button-,Set Tools; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others yslill'ed in the .art to which it appertains to malte and use the .sa-me.
This invention relates to a' new and useful tool in the form of a combined punch and button set which is adapted to be used to simultaneously .punch and rivet or set a marker but-ton through the ear of a hog or other animal.
A further object of .the invention is to provide a tool of the above stated .character which is adapted to telescopically and rigidly connect the two parts of a marker button with a single operation.
A rstill further object of the invention is to provide each jaw .of the tool with spring tension means for holding each part :of .the button to its respective jaw prior 'to the actuation of the tool.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a lsimple and inexpensive tool which is reliable and eiiicient in use.
With these and other objects in view as will appear Aas the ,description proceeds, the invention comprises the various novel features of construction, combination land arrangement of parts as will be fully described hereinafter and .afterward specifically claimed.

In order that fthe construction and operation of the invention may be readily co1nprehended by those skilled in the :art to which the invention relates, l have illustrated an'approved 1embodi-ment thereof in the accompanying drawings and will now proceed to fully describe the same in co-nnec Vtion with said drawings, in which 1 and 2 indicate the handles of the tool whichy are pivoted adjacent their forward ends as at 3` .attached to the adjacent handle. As shown the jaw bars are arranged in parallel planes and are adapted to be moved to and from each other in parallel planes by virtue of their pivotal and sliding connections with the handles.
The jaw bar l is provided between its forward end and the pivot 6 with an aperture 9 formed adjacent one end with van enlargement of countersink 10, and said aperture and countersink are .adapted to receive the base 11 and flange 12 of a piercing elcment. 13 indicates a pointed stud projecting axially from the base 11, and the inner end of the stud is flared as indica-ted by the numeral 111 for a purpose which will presently appear.
lThe inner face of the jaw bar l is provide'dwith a countersink 15 arranged c'oncentrically of the piercing elementl and is adapted to receive the flange 16 of one telescopic part of a marker button, said flange being provided with a sleeve 17 adapted to be positioned over and in axial alinement with the pointed stud 13.
18 indicates spring arms vwhich are anchored in the jaw bar l at -diametrically opposite points of the countersink 15 and have their outer ends bent inwardly toward each other for engagement with the flange 16 ot said telescopic button part. The inner face .of the jaw bar is cut away as at 19 to permit the outer ends of the spring arms to yield outwardly to enable the flange 16 to be positioned therebetween, the tension of said lspring arms being suiiicient to hold the yflange against casual displacement. l
The lower jaw bar 5 1s provided at a point between its forward end and the pivot 6 with an apertine 2O for the reception of a tubular anvil 21, the outer end of which is of slightly larger diameter as indicated by the numeral 22 to' provide an annular shoulder for engagement with the inner surface of the jaw. rlhe outer end of the tubular anvil is provided concentrically of its bore with a bead 23 adapted to be engaged Within one end of the other telescopic part of the button, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and serves to hold the button part centered on the anvil in axial alinement with it and the rst mentioned button part carried by the other jaw bar. 24 indicates a flat spring which has one end secured to the inner face of the jaw 5 by screws 25, and the other end is bifurcated as at 26 and is adapted to receive the sleeve 27 of the second telescopic button part. As shown the outer end of the spring 24 is bowed outwardly and away from the jaw and extends over the end of the anvil 22 and is adapted to bear on the flange 28 of the second telescopic button part to hold it.

In the operation of the tool, the two telescopic parts of the marker button are attached to thev respective jaws 4 and 5 in axial alinement with each other so that when the handles are moved together, thejaw bars will also be moved together in parallel planes, thus causing the two parts of the button to telescope through each other. The pointed stud 13 by virtue of its relative position will perforate the ear of the hog or other animal and facilitate the telescoping of the button parts through the ear perforation. At the same time that the button parts are telescoped through each other, the flared inner end 14 of the stud 13 will serve to flare the outer end of the sleeve 27 and thus set or rivet it within the sleeve 17 of the other button part. From this construction it will be apparent that the tool will effectively act as a combined punch and button set, accomplishing both with but a single operation.
After the button has been set or riveted through the ear of the animal, the handles of the tool are separated which will cause the jaw bar 4 to recede from the jaw bar 5, the latter with the spring 24 holding the button so that the flange 16 may be readily disengaged from between the spring arms 1S. The tool may be then moved laterally and disengaged from the button.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
1. A combined punch and button set tool comprising a pair of handles pivotally eonnected adjacent their forward ends in overlapping relation, a pair of jaw bars pivotally connected to the forward ends of said handles for movement to and from each other in parallel planes, an anvil carried by one of said jaws, means for holding a telescopic button part on said anvil, a piercing element carried by the other jaw bar, and means for holding the` other telescopic button part on said jaw bar over and in axial alinement ywith said "piercing element, said button parts adapted to be telescoped when said jaw bars are moved together.
2. In a tool of the class described, the combination with a Jair of jaw bars adapted to be moved to and from each other in parallel planes, an anvil ycarried by one of said jaw bars, a fiat spring having one end attached to the jaw carrying said anvil and the other end bifurcated and bowed outwardly over said anvil, said bifurcation adapted to receive the sleeve of one telescopic button part, said spring end adapted to bear onthe flange of said button part and hold it on and 'in axial alinement with said anvil, a piercing element carried by the other jaw bar and disposed in axial alinenient with said anvil, and means for holding the other telescopic button part to said jaw bar over said iercing element.
3. In a tool of the class described, the combination with a pair of jaw bars arranged to move to and from each other in parallel planes, an anvil carried by one of said bars, spring tension means to` hold one telescopic part of the marker button on said anvil, a piercing element carried by the other jaw bar in axial alinement with said anvil, and having a swaging face at its base, the inner face of said last named jaw bar being formed with a countersinlr concentrically of said piercing element and adapted to receive the flange of the other telescopic part of the marked button, and spring arms anchored in the jaw bar at diametrically'opposite points of said eountersink and adapted to engage and hold the flange of the last named telescopic part of the button.
4. In a-tool of the class described, the combination with a pair of jaw bars arranged to move in parallel planes, an anvil carried by one of said jaws, spring tension means to hold one telescopic part of the marker button on said anvil, a vpiercing element comprising a base mounted inthe other jaw bar in axial alinement with said anvil, a pointed stud extending axially from said base andv having its inner end flared, said last named jaw bar formed with a countersink concentrically of said piercing element and adapted to receive the flange of the other telescopic part of the marker button, and spring arms carried by said last named jaw bar at diametrically opposite points of said countersink and adapted to grip the flange 0f the telescopic button part arranged therein, said inner flared end of the pointed stud serving to are the outer end of the rst mentioned button part when it has been telescoped through the last vnamed button part to rigidly connect the button parts.
