Description
June 17, 1924. 1,498,032
. A. M. HAMER BACKUP POST Filed June 20. 192] Patented June 17, 1924.
UNITED STATES AUGUSTUS M. HAIVIER, OF GOOSE CREEK, TEXAS.
BACKUP POST.
Application filed June 20, 1921. Serial No. 478,944.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS M. HAMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Goose Creek, in the county of Harris and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Backup Posts, of which the following is aspecification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a backup post for rotaries.
One object of the invention is to provide a backup post designed to be carried by a rotary table and to engage with a pipe tong to rotate the same for the purpose of screwing together and unscrewing joints of pipe to which the tong is applied.
Another object is to provide a backup post which will hold the tong at any desired point of adjustment above the table.
With the above and other objects in view the invention has particular relation to certain novel features of construction, operation and arrangement of parts, an example of which is given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings,
wherein Figure 1 is a plan View of a rotary, showing the post thereon.
Fig. 2 is a side view thereof.
Fig. 8 shows a top view of the post, and
Figs. 4 and 5 show side views, taken at right angles to each other.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 is the rotary table,'which is mounted tor'rotation on the base 2 and which is adapted to engage with and rotate the drill stem or pipe 3.
. in the table.
whose lower end engages in one of the I spaced notches 7, in the adjacent side of the post to hold the bracket in fixed position. -2
The other side of the bracket has a bearing 8, forming a holder for the handle of the tong 9. This tong is engaged on a section of the pipe 3, and the other section of the pipe is held against turning by the stationary tong 10, so that when the rotary 1, is turned then it will operatethrough the tong 9, to screw together, or unscrew, the said jolnts of pipe.
W hat I claim is In rotary well drilling apparatus, the combination with a post of a tong holder adjustably mounted thereon, and including a bracket slidable on the post and a bearing in which the tong handle is slidable; a latch carried by the bracket, spaced catches on the post with which the latch is adapted to engage to hold the holder at any point of adjustment on the post.
In testimony whereof I have. signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
AUGUSTUS M. HAMER.
