drilling apparatus.
An important object is to provide a well drilling apparatus having a sub or suspended bed arranged beneath the main bed and the rotary table of the machine, the said bed being provided with suitable means for gripping a drill stem ,or pipe to holdthe same against rotation independently of the rotary table.
A further object of the'invention is to provide a well drilling apparatus of the class described wherein the sub bed islocated out of the way of the rotary table and it does not in any way interfere with the oper: ation of the same.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application, and in wh' like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,

In the drawing the numeral 5 generally perspective of the sub or designates the improved machine which includes spaced parallel skids 6 connected intermediate their ends by asub bed 7, the said sub bed? being provided with laterally projecting flanges 8 which are imbedded which is desi in the upper sides of the skids 6 and secured thereto by bolts 9. lVith reference to F igure 6 it will be observed that the sides of the sub bed 7 flatlycontact with the inner sides of the skids 6 and that the bolts 9 which secure the flanges to the skids also extend through the main bed 11 to firmly anchor the same to the skids.
With reference to Figure 6 it will be observed that the sub bed 7 is provided with a centrally located gradually reduced opening 12 which snugly receives a tapered bushing 13, the said bushing being provided with oppositely arranged longitudinally extended ribs 1 1v which extend to two oppositely arranged grooves 15 in the side walls of the opening 7 so as to hold the bushing 13 against rotation. The upper end of the bushing 13 is enlarged laterally to provide an annular shoulder 16 which contacts with the top of the sub bed 7 and thereby limits the'downward movement of the bed and also reinforces the upper portion of the bushing.
The drill stem or pipe 18 is passed through the bushing 13 and is adapted to be connected to the bushing by means of a pair of semi-circular slips or gripping devices 19 having their inner sides provided with teeth which firmly grip the pipe and thereby hold the same in position.- The upper ends of the semi-circular slips 19 are provided with handles 20 by means of which the slips may be removed when desired.
It is thus seen that the drill stem or pipe 18 may be gripped by the slips 19 and thereby held against rotation with relation to the sub bed which as set forth above is entirely independent of the main bed and the turntable. By providing a means for gripping the drill stem or pipe beneaththe turn table, the tongs may be engaged with the upper portion of the drill stem for screwing or unscrewin the same as may be desired.
The under side of the turn-table is as usual provided with an annular series of gear teeth 22. engaged by an operating pin 1011 23 secured upon one end of a shaft 24.- The shaft 24 of course extends from a suitable source of power and rotates the pinion 23 in any desired direction so that the table ated by the numeral 26 may be rotated. n annular series of anti-friction elements 28 may be arranged between the turn table 26 and the main bed 11. The main bed 11 is provided with a plurality of inwardly extending arms30 which extend into an annular groove 31 in the turn table 26 so that the turn table is held against upward movement and from disengagement with the pinion 23.
A collar designated by the numeral 34 and clearly illustrated in Figure 4 may be arranged upon the turn table 26 to form a gripping means for the fluted stem 36.
With reference to the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it will be seen that sub bed which is suspended beneath the main bed is provided with means for gripping the drill stem independently of the rotary member 26 and also independently of the main bed 11. Therefore, when it is desired to screw or unscrew the drill stem it is merely necessary to insert the slips or gripping devices 19 into the bushing 13 and thereby connect the lower portion of the stem to the sub bed. The tongs may now be engaged with the upper portion of the stem in the usual manner and the rotation of the turn table will result in the rotation of the upper portion of the drill stem.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A drilling machine comprising skids, a sub-bed having attaching members imbedded in said skids, a main bed arranged above the sub-bed and having gripping devlces.
2. A drilling machine comprising sklds, a
sub-bed having attaching members imbedded in said skids, a main bed arranged above the sub-bed and having gripping devices, and gripping devices associated with the sub-bed and having means for gripping the drill stem independently of the main bed.
3. A drilling machine comprising skids, a sub-bed having attaching members imbedded in said skids, a main bed arranged upon and connected to the sub-bed, gripping devices associated with the sub-bed, and a turn table mounted on said main bed and having gripping members, said first and second named gripping members being independent of each other.
4. A drilling machine comprising a main bed, a sub bed arranged beneath said main bed and having laterally directed flanges, a pair of skids having fastening devices extending through said flanges and said main bed whereby to connect the main bed and sub bed to the skids, and a gripping device carried by said sub bed and having means for gripping the drill stem independently of the main bed.
5. A drilling machine comprising a main bed,- a sub bed arranged beneath said main bed and having laterally directed flanges, a pair of skids having fastening devices extending through said flanges and said main bed whereby to connect the main bed and sub bed to the skids, a gripping device carried by said sub bed and having means for gripping the drill stem independently of the main bed, and a turn table rotatably mounted upon said main bed.

A rotary drilling machine comprising skids, a sub bed confined between said skids and having laterally directed flanges im bedded in said skids, the upper surface of said sub bed being flush with the upper surface of said skids, a main bed'mounted upon said subbed and said skids, said sub bed being provided with oppositely arranged grooves, a bushing extended through said sub bed and having ribs received in said grooves, and slips extending into said bushing and having teeth engaging the drill stem. 7. A rotary drilling machine comprising skids, a sub bed confined between said skids and having laterally directed flanges imbedded in said skids, the upper surface of said sub bed'being flush with the upper surface of said skids, a main bed mounted upon said sub-bed and said skids, said sub bed being provided with oppositely arranged grooves, a bushing extended through said sub bed and having ribs received in said grooves, slips extending intosaid bushing and having teeth engaging the drill stem,
.and a turn table rotatably mounted upon said main bed.
