E. PERINA FOUNTAIN PEN CLIP Filed July '7, 1923 EY o g WITNESS: w ATroRNEY.
l l Patented .lune 17, 1924;
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD PERINA, OF `:PORT RICHMOND, NEW YORK.
vthe fountain pen with in .United States Patent FOUNTAIN-PEN CLIP.
Application filed July 7, 1923. Serial No. 650,085.
To all whom t may concern.' f, f
Be it known that I, EDWARD PERINA, a citizenof the United States, residing `at Port Richmond, in the county of Richmond and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fountain Pen Clips, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to manipulating devices.
More particularly the invention relates to devices especially 'adapted for use in conjunction with'al vplunger in the barrel of a fountain pen for effecting the movement of f the plunger in the illin ofthe barrel of The type of fountain pen in vconjunction with which the manipulating device of the present invention is used lwith-is shown 1n #1,392,860, granted to me 0ctober'4th', 1921. l Y i Someof the objects of the present invention are: tovzproduce a more eiicient and effectual manlpulator of a character mentioned; to produce a manipulator which is of dual character in that it will serve for co-action with a plunger of a fountain pen for the filling of the pen and will also serve as a clip for the pen when not. in use to properly support the pen ina pocket.
With these and other objects in'` view, the invention resides in the particular provision, relative disposition and function of the parts hereinafter fully described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a sectional elevation showing the use of the presenti-invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view through the manipulator.
Figures 3 and 4 are detail views. Figure 5 is a detail perspective view of the free end of the manipulator.
As stated, the mani ulator in the present invention is to be used in conjunction with a plunger of a fountain pen for fillin the en, and it is necessary that the manipu ator designed so as to be employed for rotating the plunger and for reciprocating the same the entire length of the barrel of the fountain pen, and to this end 'the manipulator has been constructed with necessary features and also embodies features by virtue of which the manipulator may be used as a clip when arranged on the end of the pen; one part of the manipulator being a lator.
The manipulator of the present invention therefore, generally, comprises a supporting member or cap 10, a device 11 which is carried by the cap and which is directly connectable with the plunger P of the fountain pen and which also serves as a clip, and a device 12 which is carried by the cap 10 and serves to hold the device 11 in folded condition supplemented by a means 13. The supportingmember or cap 10 is of the usual construction being open at one end and closed at the other and of cylindrical construction. The device 11 consists of a part 14 and a part 15 which are connected together for pivotal movement by a fastening 'element 16. The free end of the part 14 is vice 12, as stated serves for holding the dee vice 11 in folded condition supplemented b y the means 13. The means 13 consists of furcations 23 between which the finger 18 of the hook 18 may be disposed as shown in Figure 2. It is to be understoodv that the parts 14 and 15 are of resilient or flexiblev material and for this reason ma be sprung beneath the portion 21 of the evice 11 to be held thereunder b virtue of the enlargement 22. When so eld in place the parts 14 and 15 are spaced with relation to eachi other and therefore one part may be flexed toward the other to release the same from the device 11. The fastening element 16 has a head 24 and co-acts with the Wall 25 of the cap and thus affords a means for gripping the pocket when the pen with the mani ulator thereon is larranged in the pocket.
en it is desired to manipulate the plunger of a fountain pen for the filling operation, the hook 18 is disengaged from the furcations 23 by fiexing the part 15 and at the same time the part 15 is also brought out from' beneath the portion 21 of the device 11. The parts 14 and 15 are then moved on their ivotal connections to bring the same in a ignment, whereupon the hook 18 may be engaged with a portionv of the plunger for manipulating the same for the lling of the pen.
From the foregoing it will be manifest that there has been described a manipulator which is simple and durable in construction; one which may be used for rotating and reciprocating an element requiring this action;
and one which serves as a fastening clip asV ,l when the links are in folded condition.
2. F or'use in conjunction'gwith a plunger of a fountain pen, a supporting member, a device carried by said supporting member, said device including a pair of pivotally connected links, the free end of one of said links being provided with furcations and pivoted to said supporting member, the freey end of said other link being provided With a means engageable with said plunger When the links'are in extended position and means adapted for co-action With said furcation 'when the links are in lfolded condition, and means for locking said device in folded condition.
3. For use'inconjunction with a plunger of a fountain pen, a supporting member, a device carried by said supporting member, said device including pivotally connected of a fountain en, a supporting member, a
device carried y said supporting member, said device including ivotally connected fieXible parts, one of sald parts pivoted to said .sup orting member and the other of said flexlble parts having means .engageable with a portion of said movement thereof.
5. In a device of the class described, the combination with the plunger of a fountain pen, a supporting member, a foldable device pivotally mounted to said supporting member, co-acting elements formed on opposite ends of said foldable device for engagement with each other when the device is in folded position, one of said elements adapted for engagement with a portion of said plunger When in extended 'position -to effect movement of the same.
6. In a device of the class described, the combination with the plunger of a fountain pen, a supporting member, a foldable de? vice pivotally mounted to said supporting member, co-acting elements formed on opposite ends of said foldable device for engagement with each other when the device is in folded position, one of said elements adapted for engagement with a portion of said plunger when in extended position to effect movement of the same, and means for locking said foldable device in folded position.
In testimony whereof I have aiixed my signature. f v ,4
EDWARD PERINA.
