R. T. SHERWIN SAND BLOWER FOR AUTOMOBILES Filed July 20, 1923 1&1.
Patented June 10,1924.
umre r nmnnn r. snmwm, or New YORK, N. Y.
SAND BLOWER FOB AUTOMOBILES.
Application filed m 2 0, 1923. Serial No. 652,840.
7 '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Rsman T. SHnRwIN', a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Elmhurst, New York city, in the county 5 of Queens and State of New York, have inyented certain new and useful Improvements 1n Sand Blowers for Automobiles, of which v Wheels of the vehicle, and which is elfected -by a blower or fan having suitable operating means under control ofthe driver of the car.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character in which the sand is carried in a receptacle on the car, and the sand blower actuated by an electric motor, that receives current from *the battery on the car,-or other source of current, will draw the sand from the receptacle and direct itxon the ground in proxroad where sk1dd1ng s hkel imity to the tread of the rear wheels, and which electric motor is connected with a switch under instant control of the driver, p
at to stop and start the sand blower.
In the accompanying drawing showingone embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a partial plan view of the car chassis.
Fig. and also the electric system.
Fig. 3 shows further enlarged the sandblower and connections.
Fig. 4 is a side elevation, partly broken away to show the fan.
is artly shown with the usual mechanism, and I arran e a rece tacle on the frame on a cross mem r 3. othe rear of this said box, preferabl slightly below-its level, I
arrange a san blower 4 that has its inlet ontof the rear wheels of the 2 shows the blower and sand box" As set forth in the drawing, a car chassis.
Suitable means are provided for actuating the fan wheel 12, and as shown an electric motor 13 is mounted on a shaft 14 of,
the fan, which motor is in the rear of the 'ATENT ores.-
It will be understood that a device of this character is comparatively simple in its construction and. arrangement and readily assembled on any motor vehicle. By simply closing the switch the suppl of sand 1s instantly placed on the groun in front and at the sides of the rear wheels. When the driver reaches a dangerous condition of to happen, the sand is applied before the s iddinig takes needed, and when the switch is released the motor will stop at once, so that the supply of sand is not wasted.
What I claim is 1. The combination with a motor vehicle;
' of a sand blower comprisin a sand recetacle, a fan, an inlet ipe eading direc y from said receptacle lrectly into the fan,
and a pair of pipes leading from the fan of a sand blower compris lace. Obviously, but a small quantity is.
' @3 i i-Awme meter at eme side of the casing having a branched outlet, the brtmchee'ef seidl'eutiet sheift; projecting into said casing, a blower eeeh terminating edljeeent the gmmidl end! in en mounted en said shaft in the casing, e fmont of e respective rear. wheel of the m send reeepteeie; mi inlet pipe connecting the automobile.
