R. J. KIDENEY DETACHABLE HANDLE FOR SHAVING CUPS, m'rc Filed April 18, 1922 fl-7-7-071 6y Patented June 10, 1924.
ROBERT J. KIIDENEY, 0F BUFFALO, NEW'YORK.
DETAGHABLE HANDLE FOR SHAVING CUPS, ETC.
Application filed April 18, 1922.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT J. KIDENEY, a citizen of the United States, residing in Buifalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Detachable Handles for Shaving Cups, Etc, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a detachable handle which is more particularly designed for shaving cups in which two cups are connected with each other by an intervening web which permits a lather to be formed in one of these cups while a supply of water is kept on hand in the other cup, although this invention may also be used for cups of this general character which may be used for other purposes.
Heretoforethese twin cups have been made in the form of pairs which are integrally connected and provided with an integral handle which construction was dif ficult and expensive to manufacture by reason of the large percentage of breakage in the course of manufacture. The integral construction of the handle also was objectionable on account of the, liability of breaking oif the handle, the unsightliness of the cups after the handle is broken off and inconvenience of handling these cups after the handle is thus broken off.
It is the object of this invention to provide a detachable handle for cups of this general character which may be constructed separate from the cups of metal, or other suitable material which is not liable to be broken and to permit of attaching the same to or removing the same from a pair of such cups with ease and facility, so that the same handle can be used repeatedly with different cups in case the latter become broken.
A further object of this invention is to provide such a handle which when applied to the cups, will be neat in appearance, capable of being maintained in a sanitary condition and not materially increase thecup as a whole, aside from furnishing a reliable support whereby the cups may be manipulated without danger of the parts becoming separated.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a pair of cups of the character described equipped with my invention. Figure 2 is a top plan view of the same. Figure 3 is a cross section taken on line 3-3, Fig, 2. Fi ure 4 is a Serial no. 554,533.
fragmentary longitudinal section taken on line H, Fig. 3. Figure 5 is a perspective view of the handle constructed in accordance with my invention'and detached from the cups.
Similar characters of reference refer to like parts throughout the several views.
Although this invention is applicable to various forms of cups, the same is-shown in the drawings, in connection with two cups 1, 1, which are arranged side by side and connected on their opposing sides by means of an upright intervening-web 3, this web and the cups being preferably constructed integrally of porcelain or earthenware, al though the same, if desired. may be constructed of other suitable material and in any other approved form; The web between the two cups terminates at its lower end at a distance from the bottom of the cups so as to form a notch at this place between the cups and the upper end of this web terminates below the upper ends of. the cups, as shown at 4, and thus'forms a passage be. tween the cups through which the shaving brush may be passed backand: forth and permits water to be taken out of one of the. cups and passed over to the soap in the other cup for' forming a lather in the lastmentioned cup without liability of spilling any of the water or lather outside of the cups.
My improved handle for supporting these cups and carrying the same, is preferably constructed of a single sheet of metal which is bent to form an outwardly grooved finger piece 5 arranged on one side of the web 3, an upwardly facing hook 6 arranged at the lower end of the finger piece and projecting through the notch 10 and into engagement with the lower end of the web, and a pluralitv of lugs arranged at the upper end of the finger piece and engaging with the upper ends of the web and cups. In the preferred construction, a single downwardly projecting lug 7 is arranged centrally on the upper inner end of the finger piece and engaged with the outer side of the upper part of the web, and two downwardly projecting lugs 8, 8. are arranged on the upper inner part of the finger piece on opposite sides of the central lug 7 and engaged with the inner sides of the adjacent upper parts of the two cups 1, 1. j
A handle of this construction can readily be engaged with and disengaged from the cups and web owing to the resilience of the metal from which this handl is made. In the application of this handle to the cups, it is preferred to first engage the upper lugs 7 and 8 of the handle w'th the upper end of the web and the adjacent parts of the cups, so that the handle is in the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3, and thereafter the hook at the lower end of the handle can be sprung into engagement with the lower end of the web. -When thus coupled, the cups and handle are reliably connected and not liable to become disconnected while in use, so that the cups may be severally carried about by means of the handle. In order to facilitate the engagement of the hook 6 with the lower end of the web, the free front end of this hook is provided with a forwardly projecting rounded lip 9 which serves as a guide for carrying the front end of the hook around the lower rounded end of the we and permit these parts to interlock with each other easily and conveniently.
By reversing this operation, the handle may be detached from the cups with equal ease and thus enable the same handle to be used with a new pair of cups in case the latter should become broken and it also permits these parts to remain separated in order to maintain them in the most sanitary condition.
This handle when applied to a pair of cups not only permits of holding the same reliably, but the same is also neat in appearance and capable of being produced economically.
I claim as my invention:
1. A pair of cups arranged side by side and connected by a web which forms a notch between the upper ends of the cups, and a handle having a finger piece arranged on one side of said web, an upwardly facing hook arranged at the lower end of said finger piece and in the same plane and engaging with the lower end of said web and a aw arranged at the upper end of said finger piece and having Si? e outer downwardly projecting lug of l-shape en aging with the outer upper part of said wee and said notch between said cups, and two inner downwardl projecting and inwardly converging lugs anged on opposite sides of said single lug and engaging with the inner sides of said cups adjacent to the upper end of said web.
2. of cups arranged side by side and connected by a web which forms a notch between the upper ends of the cups, and a handle having finger piece arranged on one side of said web, an upwardly facing hook arranged at the lower end of said finger piece and in the same plane and engaging with the lower end of said web and a jaw arranged at the upper end of said finger piece and having a single xi-shaped outer downwardly projecting lug engaging with the outer upper part of said web and said notch between said cups, and two inner downwardly projecting and inwardly converging lugs arranged on opposite sides of said single lug and engaging with the inner sides of said cups adjacent to the upper end of said web, the free end of said hook hava reversely bent guide lip.
