Description
A. ALCORTA RAZOR BLADE SHARPENER Filed Feb. 2. 1923 A TTOR/VE V8 Patented May 27, 1924.
.onirsio STATES ALEXANDER ALGORTA, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
Remit-BLADE sHARPENr'n-t Application filed February 2,. 1923. Serial N"o. 61G,535.-'
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I. ALEXANDER ALooRTA, a citizen of Peru, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the 6 county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Razor-Blade Sharpener, of which. the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The present invention contemplates a sharpening device and refers more partic ularly to a device for facilitating the stropping of safety razor blades.
Primarily the invention aims as its object to produce an extremely simple and inexpensive device for properly drawing the cutting edge of the blade over a strop or other sharpening element.
The invention furthermore aims to provide a simple and efl'ective means for associating or disassociating the blade with the device, which means positively insures against the accidental displacement of the blade when in use.
As a still further object the invention con? templates an improved mechanism for reversing and holding the cutting edge of the blade in operative contact with the sharpenin or stropping surfaces.
ith the above recited and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction set forth in the following specification, particularly pointed out in the appended claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, it being understood that the right is reserved to embodiments other than those actually illustrated herein to the full extent indicated by the general meaning of the terms in which the claim is expressed.
In the drawing- Figure 1 is a side view of the device with a blade in applied position.
Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating the blade removed and the attaching means shifted to permit of the application of the blade to the device.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the device in operation.
Fig. 4; is a sectional view taken approximately on the line indicated at 4-4 in Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary detail sectional view taken approximately on the line 55 of Fig. 1.
Referrin to the drawing by characters of reference t e device comprises a frame 10 which is preferably constructed from a single length of strap metal bent medially to provide a handle 11 and having spaced parallel terminals 12 which constitute bearing arms for a pair of parallel shafts 13 and 14:. The shaft 13 is formed adjacent one end with a gear 15 which lies at the inner side of the arm 12. The shaft 14: has secured thereon for rotation therewith a sleeve roller 16, one end of which is cut to provide gear teeth 17 which mesh with the teeth of the gear 15. The shaft B has secured thereto a blade clamping element which consists of a flat plate 18 having its inner edge curled as at 19 around the shaft with one of its side edges engaged as at 20 between one of the teeth of the gear whereby the plate 18 rotates therewith. The plate is provided at one side with a lateral extension 21 formed with a slot 22. The opposite side edge of the plate 18 is provided with a lateral extension 23 having an inturned spaced parallel flange 24. A clamping bar 25 is provided which is formed at one end with an enlarged head 26 connected thereto by a reduced neck 27, said neck being received by the slot 22 in the extension 21 of the plate 18. The plate 18 is provided with spaced pressed-up lugs 28 which are designed to snugly fit the openings in the blade B and are further designed to extend through elongated openings 29 in the clamping bar 25.
In use and operation the blade B is first placed on the plate 18 with the lugs 28 extending through. the openings and a clamping bar 25 is then brought into flat contact with the blade with the openings 29 arranged over the lugs 28. The clamping bar is then shifted laterally by means of the head 26 to engage its opposite end under the flange 24. The end of a strop is then passed through the space defined by the roller 16 and the frame and the operator by moving the device in opposite directions along the strop S will successively draw the opposite sides of the cutting edge of the blade along th surface of the strop. The blade will be reversed at the end of each stroke by the change of direction of movement of the device due to the rotation of the roller 16 which will be arrested in its further rotation by the contact of the side of the cutting edge with the surface of, the strop. When the stropping operation is completed, the operator grasps the head 26 and pulls outwardly to move the clamping bar 25 lats erally whereby its opposite end is disen gaged from under the flange 24:, thus permitting the swinging of the clamping bar awayfrom the blade to allow for its removal.
I claim:
A razor blade sharpening device of the character described comprising a frame, an actuating roller journaled therein a parallel shaft journaled therein, a gear secured to 10 of the gear for coupling the blade holder 15 with the gear for movement therewith.
ALEXANDER ALCORTA.
