sies.
SAMUEL SEROTA, OF NEW Z'OJ'RKy N. Y.
SAFETY RAZOR.
Application filed December 2', 1922.
rfhis invention relates to safety razors.
One object thereof is to provide a device of the character described having means whereby both the cutting edges of the safety razor blade may be sharpened on a strop with the various parts of the device remaining in the position assumed by them when the safety razor is used in shaving, so that the razor blade may be readily stropped without necessitating the readjustment or removal of parts, merely by positioning the strop in operative relation to the blade.
Another object is to provide a device of the character described having simple means for reversibly holding the safety razor blade so that the latter may be easily reversed so as to present rst one and then the other cutting edoe, and which means shall also permit the blade to be readily secured in position on the blade holder and removed therefrom as desired.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
Certain features herein shown and described are shown, described and claimed in my cro-pending application Serial No. 595,- 088 filed in the United States Patent `Office on the 19th day of October, 1922, and accordingly not claimed herein.
`With the above exception the invention accordingly consists in the features of construct-ion, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construct-ion hereinafter described and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claim.
In thc accompanying drawing, in which is shown one of various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention,
Fig. 1 is an end elevational View of a safety razor embodying my invention, with a razor strop positioned thereon shown in dotted lines, the razor handle being broken away to conserve space;
Fig. 2 is a plan view corresponding to Fig. 1;
Fig. is a sectional view cut along line 3`3 of Fig. 1;
F f1 is a sectional view through the blade holder bar cut along line 4.--4 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the razor blade preferably employed with my invention.
Referring in detail to the drawing, indicates a handle member secured to a frame Serial No. 604,537.
11 on which the various parts of the safety razor are mount-ed. The frame 11 is provided at the front and rear ends thereof with upstanding v bearing members 12, 12 in which are journaled a pair of rollers 13, 13 in vertical alignment and spaced from each other. At one end of the upper roller 13 is mounted a gear leladapted to mesh with the gear 15 at the corresponding end of the roller 15. A. pair of guide rollers 16, lo" are journaled to either side of and below the roller 13 for the razor strop 17 which when the blade is to be sharpened passes over these rollers 16, 18 and beneath the roller 13 as shown in Fig. 1.
Extending from the upper ends of the frame 12 is a pair of end pieces or connecting bars`12?, 12b, each secured at one end to the corresponding end of the roller 13 so as to be movable therewith and receiving between its freeends the blade holder. The latter comprises a cross bar 18 pivotally held between the connecting block 12a, 12b by means of trunnions 18', 18h journaled in the free ends of said connecting blocks. The material of the cross bar is punched out adjacent the ends thereof to provide raised tongues 18c adapted to engage in corresponding elongated slots 19C in the safety razor lade 19. A central opening 19d is further provided in the blade 19 to receive a central raised portion 18l formed in the cross bar 18. ln inserting the razor blade in the holder, one of the tongues 18c is disposed in engaging position over the corresponding opening 19 and the safety razor blade slid thereunder until the other prong engages in the other opening. The central raised portion 18d then registers in the opening 191 in the blade and acts as a stop to prevent movement of the blade relative to the cross bar. Adjacent the trunnion 18' is a rectangular hub 18C adapted to rest in a rectangular slot l8r formed in the corresponding connecting block 12a. The opposite block 12bis provided with a spring 20 which acts against the trunnion 181 so as to normally keep the rectangular hub 18c of the opposite trunnion 18FL in the rectangular slot 18f. When it is desired to reverse the blade the cross bar 18 is pushed forward so that the trunnion 18D will act against the spring 20 and the hub 18e in this way moved out of the rectangular slot 181. The trunnion 18:L will then be loose in said slot, thus permitting the rotation of the cross bar.
lOO
A guard 2l is provided for the razor blade comprising a horizontal supporting member l slidable in the guide 22'v secured at the top of the handle l0. Extending from tl e support 2l is a thumb piece 2,1." for. in anipulating the guard. A pin 23 'extends `from the member 2 n into the handle in cooperative relation to a spring` member 2li secured therein. The guard portion is shown at and has at either end thereof` upturned engaging lips 25u, 25 adapted to receive the endsot the blade 19. siivill be readily understood, the spring 24 acts against the pin 23 so asto normally urge the lips 25,` 25" against the, razor blad@ lWhen it is desired to free the razor blade, the thumb piece 2lb is pushed inward against the action of the spring 23, thus moving the guard away from theblade until the lips 25225 are out of Vengagement therewith. l f` i' ln stropping the blade, the strop 17 is passed over the guide roller 16 underneath the gear Wheel 13 over the'other roller 16, and underneath the razor blade and above the guard'member.. is the handle 10l is movedback andforth, the blade holder including the coi'inecting blocks 1Q, l2", the cross bar 18, and the blade thereon is given a rocking movement bythe operation oi' the gears`18., 18, thus presenting lirst one and then the other side of one razor edge.
The other razor edgeA is then sharpened by reversing the cross bar 18 in the manner alreaclyy described.
it will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of: this invention are achieved and which i.; Well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be mad-eoili the above invention and as various changes n'iight be made in the emb,odi ment above set'torth, it is to, be understood that all'matter herein set forth or shown in the aecoinpanying drawings is to be interpreted as illustrative and notl in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention l claim as iiewiand desire to secure by Letters Patenti-V device of the character described comerising a handle member, av supporting iframe seeured thereto including connecting bifirs'pivoted to said trame, a double edge razor blade, a holder rel-easably secured to the blade bet-Ween the cutting edges thereof, and revoluvbly mounted on said bars to selectivelyhold either edge of the blade in effective position, a spring pressed memA her disposed in operative relation to said holder.
"n testimony whereof I ailix my signature.
SAMUEL SEROTA.
