Application filed November 4, 1921. Serial No. 512,853.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES Y. JoNns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Saxton, in the county of Bedford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Thimble, of which the following is a specification.
It is the object of this invention to provide a thimble so constructed that it may be used not only for pushing a needle utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view,
which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows in elevation, a device constructed in accordance with the invention;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section; Figure 3 is a cross section on the line A-B of Figure 2 looking in the direction of the.
arrows marked 3; Figure 4 is a cross section on the line A-B of Figure 2, looklng in the direction of the arrows marked 4.
In carrying out the invention, there is provided. a body 1, secured within a casing 2 including a cap 3 and a base ring 4, connected by compressible ribs or needle gripping strips 5 having outwardly bowed intermediate portions 6. These strips 5 being secured at their ends, there is no danger of threads catching in them.
A needle 7 may be inserted between any one of the ribs 5 and the body 1, and when the said rib is compressed, the needle 7 will be gripped, so that the needle may be pulled readily through the work. The thimble may be used, in the ordinary way, to push a nee- I dle into the material. It is to be observed that the openings 8 in the casing 2 afford edges against which the eye end of the needle may be placed, if desired, to facilitate the operation of pushing the needle into the work.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed is: I
1. A thimble including a body with a cap and a base ring fitting thereover and hav-' ing needle gripping stripsattached at their ends to the cap and base respectively, the walls of the body being positioned between the strips and the finger of the user when the device is applied. 7
2. A thimble including a longitudinally extending laterally compressible needle gripping strip secured at its ends and having means positioned between said strip and the finger of the user to provide for the clamping of the needle between said strip and means.
3. A thimble comprising a body and a casing receiving the body, the casing comprising a cap, a base ring, and ribs connecting the cap with the base ring, the ribs cooperating with the body to grip a needle.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES YOHN JONES.
