SUPPORTING CLIP.
Appltetion filed June 11, 1923. Serial 1%. were.
To all 20 izom it may concern:
Be it known that I, .Gnonon A. KNAPP, n. citizen of the United States. residin at Lliicago, in the county of Cook and i tate of lllinoisJhave invented certain new and useful liioprovements in Supporting Clips, of which the following is a specification.
'ihis invention relates to supporting clips for sheet metal articles.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide on improved supporting clip for sheet metal articles, such for example as plasterer-s corner beads, and the like Another object is to provide a clip which will have an inseparable grip on the article supported when the clip is nailed, or otherwise fined to the wall of the building structure.
A further object is to provide a one-piece clip heving integral parts to hold or grip the bead without any change in the bead structure.
Uther objects and advnntaqes will hereinafter appear from a considleration of the (allowing description, when taken in conunction with the drawings. wherein Fig. 1 shows a perspe tive view of a cor ner bend with the clip attached thereto.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the clip.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the clip.
In all the views the same reference characters are employed to indicate similar parts.
in many situations where a plaster corner head is required at the corner of a wall to serve as a ground to ,which the plaster is to be finished and to serve as a protecting menus for the plaster. it becomes necessary to line up the projecting head, or nose, in a. vertical plane, with respect to the corner of the head must be located varying istances from the wall and for this purpose the improved clip is especially valuable.
in attaching the clip to the corner head of standard type, one of the plaster-keying holes in the side walls of the flanges, or wings of the head. is utilized as means, in conjunction with especially formed parts of the clip. to secure the clipto the head.
The clip is made entirely of a single strip of sheet metal having a flat body part 5 with perforations 6 to receive nails to fix it to a building wall structure,
Nee:- one end of the clip are slits made In such cases ;arts of from the side edges of the clip, extending inwardly and axially to form tongues 7 and 8. The tongue 7 points toward the near end 9 and the tongue 8 points toward the more remote end 10. One end of each tongue is inseperably attached to the body part 5 of the clip.
A hump 11 is formed in earl tongue near its attached end to raise this portion of the tongue slightly above the underlying surface of said body part to provide space to receive the metal of the corner head between the tongue and the body part of the clip. T he lreeends 12 of the tongues areslightly curved outwardly to conveniently admit the engaging part of the corner bead under the tongues.
13 is a typical corner bead structure having the usual head 1% and the diverging side wings or flanges 15 and 16 with the plasterkeymg holes 17 at intervals.
To. attach the clip. it is placed below side wing. and tongue 8 is passed thru a perforation ii. The clip body then moved to the right until tongue 'l'rides above the ad jiiccnt part of the wing 15. whereupon the clip is now moved to the left until its longest axis is substantially degrees from the longest axis of the head When the clip is nailed to the well. and .alicn two or more clips are used on a single head, there can be no relative movement of the clip and bead.
It is not practicable to rivet the clip to the head. as a shop operation, because there. is no convenient way of pro-determining their location and. to perform such an opei etion at the point of application or on the work, would be inconvenient and an expensive proceeding. i
The improved clip is strong. relatively thin, easily to be applied and inexpensive in construction.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A supporting clip for sheet metal structures comprising a flat body parthaving two integral tongueson opposite sides near one end. each tongue having a hump near its attached end to bodily displace the tongue laterally'from the body part and having its free end bent outwardly.
In testimony whereof I hereunto sub scribe my name.
