THIGH Ann oALr :encarnav Appncaufm mea August 4, 1923. seriaiuo. 655,669.'
To all whom t 07mg/ concern.
Be it known that I, IDA CHAFFEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Missoula, in the county of Missoula and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Thigh and Calf Legging, of which the following is a speciiication. K
This invention relates to surgical legging or stocking and more particularly to a nonelastic legging adapted to be firmly fitted to the thigh and calf of the wearer for the purpose of relieving swollen veins and varicose conditions.
One of the objects of the inventionis to provide a legging of this character which will be non-elastic so that swelling' of the leg will be prevented thus relieving the patient of the distress caused by the swollen veins and broken arteries.
A further object of the invention is to provide a legging of this character which may be easily applied to the leg so that it will be firmly and tightly held in position and may be readily removed and which will be comfortable while being worn.
Other objects of the invention will appear upon consideration of the following detailed description and accompanying drawing inv which: Y
Figure l is a side elevationrof the device showing it applied. Y
Figure 2 is a detailed view on an enlarged scale showing some of the detailed structure of the legging.
Referring to the drawing by numerals the legging consists of two sections l and 2, the former being adapted to be fitted to the calf of the leg of the wearer while the section 2 is adapted to be snugly fitted to the thigh of th-e leg. The section l consists of the heel portion 3 fitted around the heel of the wearer and an enlarged calf embracing portion 4 cut and tted to the calf of the wearer. This calf embracing section consists of a single piece havingits longitudinal marginal edges equipped with reenforcing strips 5 which are provided with eyelets 6 to receive a lacing 7 whereby the Inaterial may be tightly drawn around the calf of the leg. The material is preferably nonelastic such as heavy canvas, leather, or duck and the upper and lower marginal edges are reenforced by any suitable means to maintain the proper contour so that the section will firmly lit the leg when it is applied.
The thigh embracing section 2 is constructed of the same material and formed in a single piece having its longitudinal marginal edges reenforced by the strip or band 5 being provided with eyelets 6 to receive the lacing 7, whereby the section maybe tightly bound around the thigh. The upper end ofl this section as shown to advantage in Figure l is shaped, by cutting away a portion of the material, as shown, to comfortably fit the thigh. This section is also formed of non-elastic material and the up-k per end is equipped with elastic tape 9 to be strapped and tied around the upper portion of the leg to maintain the section in position.
The thigh section and the calfsection l and 2 are connected together by a pair of supporting straps 10 to prevent the lower Section from slipping on the calf of the wearer.
The device will be found to be especially advantageous in cases of broken arteries and varicose conditions of the leg which are Y sometimes treated by the vapplication of the elastic stocking and legging. I have found, however, that the non-elastic material is more effective in its treatment as swelling of the leg is impossible due to the tendency of the material to maintain its original shape and form. Thus the arteries andv veins lare prevented from expanding and,
greater comfort to the wearer is assured.
Minor changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of thev claim hereunto appended.
l/Vhat I claim is;
A surgical legging of the character described comprising a calf embracing section 'and a thigh embracing section formed of non-elastic fabric, the calf embracing section being equipped with a heel portion litted to the heel of the wearer and formed of a .single piece of material having itsl longitudinal edges reenforced and equipped with eyelets, a lacing adapted to be inserted in the eyelets to firmly draw the section around the calf of the leg of the wearer, the said thigh embracing portion being also conits marginal edges equipped with eyelets, a lacing for the thigh embracing section to V-structed of a single piece of material having firmly draw this section around the thigh, means attached to the upper end of the thigh embrecinzgir section to be secured around the upper end of the thigh whereby the thigh 5 embracing section may be held in itsyupper- Y most position, the said heel Vembracing portion on the calf section preventing said calf embracing section from being drawn up, and connecting straps joining the top of one seclo tion to the lower portion of the other section IDA CHAFFEE.
