Beit known that I, FRANK HUMrr-rnis, a subject of the King of Great Britain residing at Parkstone, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in and Relating to-Machines for Forging Nails or Other Articles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to machines for forging nails or like articles especially horseshoe nails.
' In nail-machines in which the shank-part of the nail is rolled, hammered, or drawnout from the full-sized stock in a semi-cold state, the shank of the nail is unduly hardened, becomes excessively rigid and loses its ductility.
The machine according to this invention as applied to the production of horseshoe 2o nails, or the like, comprises feed-die rolls, a
molten metal stock-immersion-bath, a mechanical-depressor to immerse the stock in said molten meta-l a set of adjustably and rotatably mounted straightening-rolls, a
heating or reheating-chamber through which the stock passes on its way to product-roughforming-rolls, product-forming-dies and outcutting punches and dies by which the finished product is separated from the stock and is passed out of the machine. The stock can thus be operated upon while heated to a forging or other desired temperature.

In the machine, the subject of this invention there is provided and suit-ably mounted in a frame p, feed die-rolls b, a wheel depressor c, and guide rollers f, a heat-bath cl containing molten metal d, a set of straightening-rolls g, a re-heating muffle h with its burners h and baffle plate h a pair or set i forming-dies Z blankingdies, n and the other blade 0 of a shear are affixed; the whole mechanical movements thereof being connected by suitable toothed or other gearing r, and timed by intermittent gearing s to cooperate in the required manner for converting stock into finished nails or other articles and delivering them into a discharge chute n and if desired the fin a formed during their manufacture in sheared-off pieces into a separate discharge-chute 0 The feed die rolls 6 provided with grooves b and recesses or indentations b produce a number of waists a or parts with a reduced girth in the stock a which in the molten lead d or its equivalent is raised to a red-hot or nearly red-hot state while guided by the depressor e in conjunction with rollers f.
The stock a, after'passing through the rolls g, is progressively passed and guided into a reheating muffle or chamber h which raises the stock a up to the desired heat for forging; after which the stock is constrained to pass through intermittently-driven roughforming and feed-rolls k provided with indentations k of such shape, size and form, as to impart to the irregular cross-sectional shapes of the stock a obtained thereon during its passage through the product roughforming and feed-rolls k, any further desired variation thereof, and these heated feed-rolls is which obtain their heat from the hot stock a passing therethro-ugh and/or by separate burners operating thereon and not shown deliver said stock a in its intensely heated condition between forging and forming-punches Z and forging and formingdies Z which give the required form to the stock a, but leave a. fin a about midway of its cross-section, surrounding the product longitudinally. After this forging and forming operation the stock a, constrained by the feed-rolls k, is progressively carried forward and a second forging and forming operation takes place directly behind the first or other. At the same time the first forged and formed part of the stock a With the surrounding fin a is brought so as to register With and come under the action of a blanking-punch n and die n and the punch n presses the stock a through said die n as an outcutting or nail c from its surrounding fin a and at the same time discharges said nail 0 from its die n into a chute 02 but leaves the flash or fin a still attached to the stock a. At the next co-operating set of operations, the perforated part or fin a of the stock a thus left may be Wound upon a reel or it may be cut oil by shear- blades 0 and 0 arranged ina suitable position to do this.
' As the stock a is lengthened during its passage between the stock-spacing drawing and conipressiomrolls b and again during its passage between the product-rough-forming and feed-rolls la the peripheral speed of these rolls 6 and i0 is regulated by the gearing r to conform to the variations of length existing in the stock a so that the waists a thereon Will register correctly in the indentations 70 in the rolls is.
The machine is power driven in the usual Way through the medium of a flywheel t and its concomitant-s.
